Chapter 73: Truth hurts
Bianca
The video is grainy, silent, it is a detonation in slow motion, every pixel a shard of glass aimed at the heart of my carefully constructed world.
It’s his old study in Milan. The light was a low, golden, intimate. Jennifer is there. She was heartbreakingly beautiful, her face a masterpiece of anguish. She was pleading, her hands moving with a frantic, desperate grace that speaks of a long, shared history. Then, the tears come, not delicate, but a torrent that contorts her features. She’s shouting now, getting into his space, her finger jabbing the air between them.
Alessandro… he just stands there. His face was etched with a profound, soul-deep exhaustion. It’s the look of a man who has been fighting a war on too many fronts for too long. It softens him, makes him younger, more vulnerable than I have ever seen him. This is not my protector. This is a man being slowly dismantled.
She moves again, a sudden, violent lurch of grief. She grabs the front of his shirt, her fists twisting. She was clinging to him as if he is the last solid thing in a crumbling universe, he didn’t push her away. He didn’t restrain her. He just… accepts it. His body bows slightly under the weight of her despair, allowing her to anchor herself to him. The permission in his stillness is more intimate than any embrace we have ever shared.
Then;she kissed him.
It’s not an attack. It is a desperate, hungry plea. A last, wild, animal attempt to reclaim a territory she feels slipping through her fingers. It’s a kiss of possession and utter loss, for three endless, heart-stopping seconds… he kisses her back.
My own breath stops. The world shrinks to the grainy image on the screen. His hand, the same hand that cups my face with such tenderness comes up. It doesn’t shove. It cradles. His fingers tangle in the dark fall of her hair, pulling her closer, not pushing her away. It is an intimate, aching gesture of total surrender. It is the gesture of a man drinking a last, poisoned draft of a love he knows must die. He is saying goodbye. Not to her, but to the man he was with her. To a part of his own soul.
He was the one who broke it, wrenching back as if the touch of her lips has become acid. He turned away, his shoulders heaving with a soundless sob. She says something else, her body breaking with the force of her grief, before she flees, leaving the frame empty. He is left alone, shattered in the silent room.
I sit in the cold, electric glow of the monitor. The phantom sounds of our perfect engagement party—the laughter, the music, the clinking crystal are gone, erased. There is only the dull hum of the computer and a high, silent scream building in the vault of my skull, pressure cracking against the bone.
My reality rewrites itself in a torrent of sickening clarity.
The heroic rescue in Sicily, the storm of violence, the fierce declaration, was it born of love, or of a corrosive, needing-to-prove-something guilt? The fierce, possessive devotion he has shown me since we met,was it genuine passion, or a frantic overcompensation, a man trying to convince himself of his own narrative? The baby growing inside me… is it a miracle, a promise of our future? Or is it the final, unbreakable chain, meant to bind him to his “clean end,” to a life he chose out of duty, not desire?
The sapphire on my finger, once a symbol of celestial promise, now felt heavy, a cold, blue eye watching my disillusionment. I am not his future. I am his penance. His atonement. A living, breathing altar upon which he has sacrificed his chaotic, passionate past to build a sane, controlled dynasty.
The man I thought I loved, the man I believed would incinerate the very sun if it dared to shine on me without his permission in that raw, unguarded moment, he was not a man setting a world on fire for me.
He was a man still burning for someone else.
The tears don’t come. They are frozen somewhere deep, a glacial lake forming in my chest. I feel the baby move, a soft, fluttering kick, a reminder of the life now irrevocably tied to this beautiful, devastating lie. I cover my stomach with a trembling hand, not in comfort, but in a futile attempt to shield this innocent thing from the truth of its conception. Conceived not just in passion, but in the shadow of another woman’s ghost.
I finally reach out and close the laptop. The image is seared onto the back of my eyes. I will carry it with me now, this ghost in the machine of our love. It is the ghost of the man Alessandro was, the ghost of the love he lost, and the ghost of the woman I thought I was the woman who believed she was his end, when all along, I was just the period on a sentence he never wanted to finish writing.
