Chapter 41
Donna's POV
The room is quiet. The silent pitter patter of the rain gently hitting on the window planes. The weather is just as mellow as my mood.
I watch as the raindrops till down my window. More appearing as more even leave.
“You seem to be occupied.” A snarky voice said at the corner of my room.
Fear coursed my veins as I slowly turned seeing the terrifying creature that has been hunting my dreams for weeks.
“What do you want? Please leave me alone. You've bothered me well enough.” I said turning away.
“I wasn't aware you were in a position to give such conditions miss Donna. It seems I would have to remind you your position.” It said, the voice sounding even closer.
A force wrapped around my neck, squeezing tightly. I was being suffocated by this strange creature.
“Please.” I wheezed, clutching at my neck desperate for it to let me go.
“I'm afraid not, Miss Donna. You've gotten our roles mixed up and I'm in the right position to remind you of where you stand in this.”
“It will not happen again.” I said my vision blackening. “I'm sorry.”
Donna awoke from her dark dream, going to the garden.
The water felt heavy today, pressing against Donna like the weight of all her fears. She floated within her flooded sanctuary, surrounded by swaying gardens of luminous sea flowers, their colors rousing memories of a life less burdened. But even here, in the heart of the ocean, she couldn't escape the encroaching shadows.
Just leave me be," she whispered to the dim light filtering from the surface, her voice shaking with unrequited longing and anger. The soft ripples seemed to mock her-the quiet laughter ringing in her ears.
Suddenly, a low growl pierced her thoughts and sent a spiral down her spine. She stiffened, her heart racing, as the familiar taunting laughter of the demons echoed outside her door. The trio of hellish figures emerged from the depths, their forms coiling and shifting like smoke. They approached with a swagger born of malice, their eyes glinting in the dark.
Look who decided to play gardener," the demon leader sneered, his voice cold. "How quaint. But honestly, Donna, still hiding behind flowers? Isn't it time you realized they won't protect you?"
Donna drew herself up, making an effort to sound brave. "You have no power here," she replied, the trembling of her heart far worse than what her voice showed. "These flowers bloom even in darkness. They thrive where you only sow fear.
One of the lesser demons let out a cackle. "Fear? We're not here to scare you. We just want a little fun. You could join us instead of wasting away in this dank little garden."
"I'd rather rot," she snapped back, clenching her fists. "You don't frighten me.
“Then prepare for more than just our words, little sorceress. Remember, we’re the least of your worries.” The leader leaned in closer, his breath a rancid wind. “Keep playing with flowers, and you’ll find they’ll wither, just like your spirit. Soon, there will be nothing left of you.”
As they faded back into the shadows, their laughter twisted her insides-a reminder of her isolation and vulnerability. But amidst her simmering emotions, another ripple approached-a more welcome presence that she didn't expect.
Her heart stuttered and a wisp of color floated into view. A kaleidoscopic bunch of rare sea flowers swirled in through the water, hovering before her with grace. She saw it was Finn, his unmistakable silhouette, all charm rivaling danger.
"Thought you could use some cheer." He flashed a smile, as bright as the coral around her. "Nothing like a splash of color to lift the spirits!"
"Finn," she said, her voice softening. "You didn't have to—"
"Of course I did! These beauties deserve admiration, don't you think?" He flourished on the flowers, that playful light in his eyes cutting through her gloom of earlier. "Consider it a peace offering."
She took the flowers, inhaling their sweet fragrance, a smile tugging at her lips. "You bring trouble, you know that? But thank you."
Finn flicked a lock of damp hair from his face and swam closer, his expression turning serious. "You okay? I saw the demons leave, and.well, they're not exactly known for good manners."
"You could say that," she said, forcing a chuckle. "But I can handle them. They think I'm just a pretty face hiding behind flowers.
“A pretty face is one thing, but you’re more than that, Donna. A lot more.” He studied her for a moment, his gaze lingering over her features. “What do you do when they push you like that?”
I stand my ground," she said, her voice firm. "But sometimes it's a bit easier said than done." She flipped a flower across her fingers as a sparkle of vulnerability made its way in. "Even the strongest weeds struggle under the weight.
Finn's face softened, leaning in as his voice lowered. "No one is strong all of the time. Even pirates like me have their weaknesses." He paused, and a reflective look crossed his features. "I was just a boy when I first picked up a sword. I used to think fighting meant strength, but.it only made me think everyone would always be scared of me. You know what that feels like?
He only increased her aching heart. "I do; thus, I grew these flowers-to remind myself that out of darkness, beauty can still arise."
"You're wise," he returned, but she saw the shine of approval in his eyes. "Let's not forget, however-we can turn that darkness to powerful effect."
She lifted an eyebrow, and he could hear the amusement dance in her chest. "Powerful? Or just reckless? Really, I cannot imagine any rogue pirate advocating for rules.
Hey, rules are for landlubbers! But we're not playing it safe, are we? This isn't just about scaring away demons; you know we're in this together, right?"
"Together?" The word sent an excited shiver of warmth through her. "Do you really think that's possible?
"Absolutely," he said, the corners of his mouth drawing up into a smirk. "We would be the most notorious duo out there-the misunderstood sorceress and the rogue pirate. You already have the creative side. I can bring the chaos!"
"Is that your idea of teamwork?" she laughed, warmth blooming in her chest. "Let's see how well that works when the demons come knocking again."
Finn leaned in closer, and the air between them became charged. "Maybe it's time for a little chaos. You've got the magic, I've got the daring. Together, we could take on anything."
Donna's smile faltered as she considered the audaciousness of what they were proposing. "But what if we fail?" The doubt slipped from her lips before she could stop it.
Finn laid his hand on hers, and the touch sent a shiver of reassurance through her. "And what if we don't? Either way, you've got to choose your own story, right?"
She looked into his eyes, the weight of their shared fears and desires settling between them as certainty did. "You're right," she said slowly, a new determination kindling within her. "I've spent too long hiding. It's time to be brave.
Finn's grin widened as he squeezed her hand gently. "Then let's embrace this madness. Together. I promise to have your back-just as you have my heart."
His words caught her off guard, and she felt her breath hitch. Was he suggesting…? The connection between them deepened, and in that moment, the shadows outside seemed less menacing.
"You… you're serious?" she stammered, her cheeks flushing a shade she hoped he wouldn't notice.
Absolutely," he said with seriousness, his eyes steady. "You're amazing, Donna. We can face anything—whether it's demons or our own pasts."
With a sudden strength, she took a deep breath, a ripple of hope mingling with her lingering fears. "Okay, let's do it," she replied, her voice firm. "Let's face this darkness together.
But as laughter bubbled forth between them, a shadow loomed in the cave entrance—dark tendrils coiled ominously, a reminder that danger was still a breath away.
“Let them come,” Donna whispered, feeling Finn’s presence beside her swell with strength.
Finn’s eyes glinted with daring mischief. “Together, right? We’ll show them what true chaos looks like.”
“Together,” she affirmed, a fierce grin forming on her lips.
In the depths of the ocean, amidst blooming flowers and a bond forged in uncertainty, Donna knew she was ready to fight—not just for herself, but for the new life that lay before her. She found strength not just in her magic, but in the heart of a pirate who dared dream along with her. And as the shadows stir.
ed, a sense of belonging enveloped her, stirring the spirit of a sorceress she always should have been.
(This may be a confusing chapter. It is Donna's dream.)
