Seraphina's Confession
Seraphina's Confession
Elias and Seraphina ran through the forest. Elias's heart beat with each step. The mark on his hand burned, reminding him of Kael's desperate message.
"How much farther?" Seraphina asked, jumping over a fallen tree.
"The Temple of Shadow is on the tallest mountain," Elias pointed ahead. The black peak rose above the others, looking like a monster against the sky.
Seraphina suddenly stopped. She grabbed Elias's arm. "Wait. We need to rest."
"But Kael—"
"Will die for sure if we arrive too tired to fight," she finished. "Just five minutes, Elias."
Elias wanted to argue, but his legs were shaking. They found a small area and sat down. The mark on his hand glowed dimly in the growing darkness.
"What did he mean?" Seraphina asked quickly.
"What?"
"Through your link. Kael said something about you being..." She couldn't finish.
Elias looked away. "He said I'm pregnant with his child."
Seraphina's face went white. "But that's—"
"Impossible? I know. Men can't get pregnant, Sera."
"No, actually... that's not what I was going to say." Seraphina's voice was strangely quiet.
Elias stared at her. "What?"
Seraphina took a deep breath. "There's something I need to tell you. About our parents. About why they died."
Elias felt a chill run down his spine. "You said they were killed in a pack war."
"I lied." Seraphina's eyes filled with tears. "They were killed, Elias. Murdered because people feared what you might become."
"What I might become? What are you talking about?"
Seraphina stood up and started pacing. "Our father wasn't just an Alpha. He was special... different. Like Kael. And Mother wasn't just an Omega. She carried old magic in her blood."
"The Nightshade line," Elias whispered, remembering Aelara's words.
"Yes. When they had you, something happened. You were born with a mark – the same mark you now share with Kael." Seraphina pointed to his hand. "The adults knew what it meant. They were afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
"The return of true Omega power. The power to make life."
Elias's hand went to his stomach without thinking. "You mean..." "Male Omegas once had the power to carry children, Elias. Not all of them – only those with the strongest magic. That power was lost ages ago when Alphas and Omegas were divided. But you..." Seraphina knelt in front of him. "You have that power. And that scares those who want to keep Alphas in control."
Elias's head was spinning. "That's why our parents were killed? Because of me?"
"Because of what you represent. Hope for a different tomorrow." Seraphina took his hands. "A pack led by an Alpha who recognized you for what you are broke into our home one night. They killed Father first. Mother hid us in a secret room and fought them off as long as she could."
Tears ran down Seraphina's face. "Her last words to me were: 'Protect him. No matter what, protect him. ' I was only ten years old, but I promised. That's why I've kept the truth from you all these years."
"But why would the shadow creature want Kael to tell me this now?" Elias asked.
"Because a child born of both Alpha and Omega bloodlines would be incredibly powerful." Seraphina's eyes widened with sudden understanding. "That's what it wants – not just Kael's power, but your child's power too!"
Elias stood up quickly. "We have to go. Now."
They ran faster than before, fear giving them new power. The mountain grew larger with each step. As they climbed higher, the woods thinned, replaced by black rocks that seemed to drink in the light.
"There!" Elias pointed to a circle of black stones at the peak. "The Temple of Shadow."
They crouched behind some rocks, watching. The shadow creature stood in the middle of the circle. It still wore their father's face, but evil swirled around it like smoke. On a flat black stone lay Kael, black chains tying him.
Elias could feel their relationship humming between them. Without thinking, he reached out through their tie.
"Kael, we're here. Hold on."
Kael's eyes flickered open. "Elias... careful... trap..."
Too late, Elias felt something cold wrap around his ankle. He looked down to see black chains running up his leg.
"Well done, son," said the shadow thing, turning to face them. "I knew you'd come if I threatened your mate."
"Let him go!" Seraphina drew her sword, but more chains burst from the ground, wrapping around her arms.
The shadow thing laughed. "The brave sister. Always protecting her little brother." It walked toward them, pulling their father's body like an ill-fitting suit. "Did you tell him the whole truth, Seraphina? Or just enough to get him here?"
Seraphina strained against the chains. "Don't listen to it, Elias! It's trying to confuse you!"
"Am I?" The creature smiled. "Tell him who really killed your mother, Seraphina. Tell him whose blade cut her down."
"Stop it!" Seraphina screamed.
Elias looked between them, puzzled. "Sera?"
The shadow thing reached out, touching Elias's face with cold fingers. "Poor child. Even your beloved sister has lied to you."
"I had to!" Tears streamed down Seraphina's face. "I was under a spell, Elias! They made me do it! They made me kill her!"
Elias felt like the ground had fallen away beneath him. "No..."
"Yes," the thing hissed. "And now you'll help me, or I'll make you watch as I kill everyone you love – starting with your mate."
The thing dragged Elias to the black altar where Kael lay. "Place your hand on his heart. Now."
"Don't do it, Elias," Kael whispered, his voice weak. "Better I die than—"
"Silence!" The thing struck Kael across the face.
"Stop!" Elias cried. "I'll do it. Just don't hurt him."
Elias put his hand on Kael's chest, feeling his heartbeat. The moment they touched, their marks glowed brighter.
The shadow creature began singing in a strange language. The black stones around them glowed with dark light. Elias felt something pulling at him, trying to draw something out.
"What are you doing?" he gasped.
"Taking what's mine," the thing said. "The life growing inside you. A perfect body, born of Alpha and Omega blood."
Behind them, Seraphina had managed to work one hand free. She caught Elias's eye and mouthed a single word: "Together."
Elias understood. He gripped Kael's hand tightly and closed his eyes, focusing on their tie.
"On three," he told Kael through their link. "One... two..."
The shadow creature suddenly stiffened. "No! What are you—"
"THREE!"
Light burst from Elias and Kael's joined hands, shattering the black chains. The thing screamed, a sound that seemed to come from everywhere at once.
As the light faded, Elias saw their father's body fall to the ground. The shadow rose above it, writhing and turning.
"You cannot defeat me!" it screamed. "I am eternal!"
The shadow shot toward Seraphina, enveloping her in darkness before anyone could move.
When the darkness cleared, Seraphina stood before them. But her eyes were now pitch black, and when she smiled, her teeth were sharp as knives.
"Well," she said in a voice that wasn't her own. "This body will do nicely."
