Growing Bond
Growing Bond
The mountain path was steep and rocky. Elias's lungs burned as he climbed, following the glowing plan in the Nightshade Grimoire. Behind them, dark clouds swirled where they had left Marcus, now taken over by the shadow thing.
"We need to rest," Seraphina said, pointing to a small cave halfway up the hillside. "Just for a moment."
Kael nodded, his face tight with pain. Blood soaked through his shirt from where Marcus had struck him during their fight. He had been hiding the injury, but Elias could tell it was bad from the way Kael's binding mark flickered barely.
The small group of loyal dogs gathered inside the cave. Thorne stood guard at the door, his old but sharp eyes watching for danger.
Elias helped Kael sit down against the cave wall. "You should have told me you were hurt," he said, carefully lifting Kael's torn shirt.
Three deep claw marks ran across Kael's chest. The edges of the cuts glowed with an unnatural black light.
"Shadow poison," Seraphina whispered, her face pale. "Marcus must have already been infected when he attacked you."
Kael closed his misaligned eyes – one red, one blue – and took a shaky breath. "It will heal."
"Not without help," Elias said. He put his hand over the binding mark on Kael's wrist. Their matching marks glowed in answer, gold and blue light pulsing together.
Heat flowed between them. Elias felt strange energy move from his body into Kael's. The black edges of Kael's cuts began to fade, replaced by healthy pink skin.
"How did you do that?" one of the dogs asked, watching with wide eyes.
Elias shook his head. "I don't know. I just... knew I could."
Kael looked up at him with wonder. "The binding mark links us. Your power flows into me, and mine into you."
"Half-brothers," Elias said quietly, still trying to understand this new truth. "How is that possible?"
Kael looked at the letter they had found in the book. "My mother... she must have known your father."
"But wouldn't your father have known?" Seraphina asked, confused.
Kael's face darkened. "The dog who raised me wasn't my real father. He made that very clear every day of my childhood."
For the first time, Elias saw pain in Kael's eyes that had nothing to do with physical damage. He squeezed Kael's hand. "Is that why you hid your Omega side?"
Kael nodded slowly. "I was born with these marks," he said, tracing the blue patterns on his face. "In those days, mixed blood was seen as wrong – dangerous. When my red Alpha eye emerged, I was taught to hide the blue one, to be ashamed of half of who I was."
The cave grew quiet. Even the wolves who had been unsure about following Kael seemed touched by his words.
"I know what that's like," Elias said softly. "To be different. To not fit in."
"You were always stronger than you seemed," Kael said. "I could sense it from the moment we met."
"Not strong enough to save father," Elias answered, his voice breaking. "I left him to face that thing alone."
Seraphina put her arm around her brother. "He chose to stay behind so we could escape. He knew what he was doing."
Elias opened the Nightshade Grimoire, flipping through its glowing pages. "There has to be something in here about how to defeat the shadow creature."
As Elias turned the pages, his finger caught on a sharp edge. A small drop of blood fell onto the page. Instantly, new words appeared, written in bright letters: "Blood calls to blood, truth to truth. The Guardian and the Bridge must become one to seal the darkness."
"Guardian and Bridge," Kael said carefully. "Your father called me the Guardian and you the Bridge."
"But what does it mean to 'become one'?" Elias wondered.
Before anyone could answer, a strange sound echoed through the cave – like whispers in a language none of them knew. The shadows in the corners seemed to move, stretching toward them with dark fingers.
"We need to go," Thorne warned from the door. "Something's coming."
They rushed back onto the mountain path. The blood moon hung low in the sky, casting everything in an eerie red light. According to the map, the Temple of Light was just beyond the next hill.
As they climbed higher, Elias felt the bond mark on his hand grow warmer. He looked at Kael and saw that the blue patterns on his skin were glowing brighter too.
"Do you feel that?" Elias asked.
Kael nodded. "The closer we get to the temple, the stronger our connection grows."
Suddenly, the ground started to shake. Rocks tumbled down the slope. A terrible roar filled the air.
"RUN!" Seraphina shouted.
They ran up the path as fast as they could. Behind them, the mountain itself seemed to come alive. Rocks and earth rose up, making a massive shape – a giant made of stone with glowing black eyes.
"Marcus," Kael gasped. "The shadow is using him to control the earth."
The stone giant swung its huge arm, sending boulders crashing down around them. One of the wolves was hit and fell, crying out in pain. Thorne ran back to help.
"Keep going!" he yelled to Kael and Elias. "We'll hold it off!"
Seraphina hesitated, torn between staying to fight and saving her brother.
"Go with them," Kael told her. "They need you."
Elias grabbed Kael's hand, and they ran together toward the hill. The Temple of Light appeared before them – a circle of tall white stones glowing softly under the blood moon.
As they reached the temple, the binding marks on their hands flared with blinding light. The blue patterns on Kael's skin formed complete symbols now, matching pictures in the Nightshade Grimoire.
They stepped into the circle of stones. In the middle stood a raised platform with two handprints carved into the stone – one larger, one smaller.
"I think we need to place our hands there," Elias said. "Together."
Kael nodded. But before they could reach the stage, a dark shape appeared in front of them.
It was their father – or what had once been their father. His eyes were fully black, his skin covered in the same dark veins they had seen on Marcus. The shadow thing had taken him too.
"Father," Elias whispered, his heart breaking.
The thing that had been their father smiled with too many teeth. "Your father is gone. His body is mine now, just as Darius's was. Just as Marcus's is."
"Let him go," Kael ordered, stepping in front of Elias.
The shadow thing laughed. "Why would I do that? Especially when I'm about to have what I've wanted for ten thousand years." It looked at Elias with hungry eyes. "The last Nightshade. The Bridge between worlds."
"You'll have to go through me first," Kael growled, his mismatched eyes sparkling with power.
"Gladly," the dark creature said. It lifted its hand, and darkness shot from its fingers like deadly arrows.
Kael pushed Elias away and took the full force of the blow. He fell to his knees, gasping in pain as the darkness wrapped around him like black chains.
"KAEL!" Elias screamed, running to him.
"Complete the binding," Kael whispered, his voice weak. "It's our only chance."
Elias looked from Kael to the platform with its waiting handprints, then to the shadow thing wearing his father's face. The red moon was almost set. Time was running out.
And then the shadow creature spoke words that froze Elias's blood: "He hasn't told you everything, has he? About what finishing the binding really means?" The shadow wearing his father's face smiled cruelly. "One of you must die."
