Chapter 45
The world shook beneath Elara’s feet. The battlefield that had been soaked in blood and steel now trembled, split apart by unseen forces. Warriors—both her own and Draven’s undead—staggered as the very earth betrayed them.
Elara’s heartbeat thundered in her ears.
A high, lilting chant rose above the chaos, the voice coming from the crimson-robed summoner standing atop the ridge.
The woman’s arms were stretched toward the sky, her fingers weaving intricate symbols of black fire, her lips shaping words in a language older than time.
Elara’s stomach twisted.
The air had changed—it had become heavy, charged with something ancient and wrong. She had felt magic before, but this wasn’t magic.
This was something worse.
A low, resonant rumble vibrated through the battlefield, rattling Elara’s bones. Warriors on both sides froze as the very fabric of the world warped.
And then—it appeared.
A towering shadow, darker than the night itself, unfolded from the depths of nothingness.
The Voidborn.
A being not meant for this world.
The battlefield was bathed in its unnatural glow—pale, eerie light emanating from its jagged, ever-shifting form.
Then came the screaming.
\---
The Unleashed Horror
Elara stood frozen for a second, staring up at the nightmare that had been summoned.
It was massive, its form constantly shifting, as though it couldn’t quite exist in this reality. Jagged, spiked limbs emerged from the shifting shadows of its body, its eyes—if they could even be called that—burned like dying stars.
Elara had read about these creatures in forbidden texts, whispered legends of realms beyond death.
Voidborn.
Not alive. Not dead. A force of destruction itself.
The ground cracked beneath its weight as it took a step, its presence distorting the air. The scent of ash and decay burned Elara’s lungs.
Leon’s voice cut through the chaos. “Elara, we need to move—now!”
She snapped out of it, just as the Voidborn struck.
Its massive claw came down, obliterating an entire section of the battlefield. Dozens of warriors—her own and Draven’s alike—were wiped out in an instant, their bodies consumed by the void.
It wasn’t killing them.
It was erasing them.
A cold terror gripped Elara’s chest. This isn’t just a monster. It’s an extinction.
\---
A Desperate Plan
Elara knew they couldn’t kill it.
But maybe… they could stop it.
She turned toward the ridge, eyes locked on the summoner.
“She’s the key,” Elara said. “She’s holding the Voidborn in place.”
Leon followed her gaze. “Then we cut the strings.”
“Keep it distracted,” she ordered. “I’m stopping this.”
Leon hesitated, and for just a moment, their eyes met.
A thousand unsaid things passed between them.
Then he nodded. “Don’t die.”
And with that, he turned toward the impossible enemy, sword in hand.
Elara ran.
\---
Leon’s Stand Against the Void
Leon moved.
The battlefield blurred around him as he charged, weaving between fallen warriors, dodging the shockwaves of the Voidborn’s attacks.
He could feel its gaze land on him.
A predator had noticed its prey.
Leon didn’t slow down.
He lunged, his sword flashing with arcane light as he slashed at one of its limbs.
The blade met resistance—it was like cutting through solid night. Reality itself fought back.
The Voidborn twisted, its form reshaping.
Then, it swung.
Leon barely dodged, throwing himself into a roll just as the creature’s attack shattered the ground where he had stood. The force threw him backward, dirt and debris pelting his armor.
Leon landed hard, coughing blood.
The Voidborn loomed over him.
Its presence swallowed everything.
But it was looking at him now.
Just as planned.
\---
Elara’s Final Sprint
Elara pushed forward, ignoring the chaos behind her.
She was nearly at the ridge, her boots kicking up dirt and blood-soaked mud. The summoner had her back turned, still lost in the spell.
Elara didn’t slow.
She leapt.
Her blade arced through the air—
—just as the summoner turned.
A shockwave of magic erupted between them.
Elara’s vision blurred, and she was sent flying backward, slamming into the ground with a force that knocked the breath from her lungs.
Pain screamed through her body.
The summoner lowered her hood.
A woman—young, but with ancient eyes. Crimson robes draped over her thin frame, runes glowing along her arms. She tilted her head, studying Elara as though she were something less than human.
“You’re persistent,” she murmured.
Elara forced herself up, spitting blood. “You’re insane.”
The woman smirked. “Maybe.”
Then, before Elara could move, a shadow stepped out from behind the summoner.
A figure too familiar.
Tall. Imposing.
His presence was like a storm waiting to break.
Elara’s stomach dropped.
Draven.
He had never left.
He had been waiting.
Draven’s lips curled. “You’ve come a long way, Elara.”
Her fingers tightened around her sword.
His dark, void-black eyes gleamed. “Shall we finish this?”
And then—darkness swallowed her.
