Chapter Eighty-Eight

                  Mirah

Zeke, who was sparring with Qyle at a corner which they'd transformed to look somewhat like a sparring ring, hurried over to me. “What's wrong? You look pale.” He asked softly, pulling me into a hug. I dodged his touch, taking a few steps back.

“M-my parents. T-they t-they were c-” I stuttered, still in a state of shock.

“Calm down, and talk slowly, Mirabella. What happened?” Natasha prompted.

“I can't!” I snapped, feeling annoyed. Annoyed at myself for not being able to do anything.

Annoyed at everyone for wasting time, when we should be saving them.

“Mirah,” Zeke called out.

I took a deep breath, and tried again. “We have to get to Vermont. My parents have been taken away by a strange thing. And I-I watched, without being able to do anything.” My eyes burned, as I struggled to remain on my feet.

Probably noticing how weak I was feeling, Zeke led me to the living room where Queen Belinda was engaged in a conversation with X. They rose to their feet when we walked in.

“What's wrong dear?” Queen Belinda questioned.

I swallowed, feeling nauseous. My stomach churned, and my heart burned in anger.

“You guys are wasting time. They're in danger!” I snapped, getting more angry.

“Tell us what took your parents, dear.” Queen Belinda requested.

“It didn't look human. It had a human face though, but with four legs like a Centaur.” I panted, picturing what just happened in my mind's eye. I recounted everything as I could remember it, but their faces remained the same when I finished.

“I think it's an illusion, Mirabella.” X put in.

“No, it wasn't. I knew what I felt, and saw. It was real, you guys don't have to make me look like a fool.” I was hurt.

Hurt that none of them believed me.

“Calm down, Mirah. You're being irrational.” Zeke said, and I flared up.

“Irrational, you say? Trust you to say that. I'm not like you Zeke. I might have a cracked relationship with my parents, but I'm not inhumane. I can't watch as my parents get killed, while I have the power to stop it.” I stared him directly into the eyes.

“But I doubt you'd understand. You're a Vampire, aren't you? Incapable of having feelings. Well, since none of you are willing to help me, I'd go on my own.” I said determinedly, already turning to create a portal.

“Mirah, no! It might have been an illusion!” Zeke called out, but I ignored him.

I was going to get my parents back, and I was going to do it now.

My parents' house was the least place to begin my search, but I felt compelled to check there first.

The ominous feeling lingered in the living room where they'd been taken. I bent in front of the door, rubbing my hand on the surface of the ground. I could still feel that ‘thing's’ aura. It was so thick that it made my heart shake.

“You know the most pathetic thing about humans is their empathy. Filial love. Fortunately for me, my plans worked out just fine.” Someone said.

I froze. And it wasn't because there was someone else in the room. But because the voice was familiar.

I'd heard it before. And I loathed it. I turned back slowly and found him sitting on the couch, cross-legged watching me as one would do a prey.

“Tyler,” I whispered.

“It's King Tyler. But I'd ignore your disrespect for the fact that you played your role well.” He smiled cynically.

My heart jumped to my mouth. “What did you do to my parents?” I questioned, my eyes narrowing.

“Your parents? I haven't met them. But let's not begin from there. The Dark realm, and the Human realm were supposed to exist in isolation,” he clicked his fingers and rose to his feet. This man possessed his youthful appearance, looking like he was forty, instead of the many millennium which he probably was. And he was tall too.

“Imagine my anger upon finding out that a human has been chosen by the Source, to be its Controller. Having the best interest of the Dark realm at heart, I naturally couldn't sit back and watch it happen. So what did I do?” He laughed, the sound discordant to my ears.

“I banked on the fact that you're human, and are easily swayed by emotions. The plan was to lure you away from Gavemorth, and capture you. But you made my work easier for me, by appearing on your own. I have to thank you for that.” He smirked.

Hearing him speak might have made someone believe that he was kind. That behind that calm facade wasn't a monster who'd kill everyone and destroy everything just to achieve his aim.

“I wasn't sure it'd work at first, so imagine my glee when you returned to ‘save’ your parents.” He laughed again.

My blood ran cold. “You're a monster. Where are my parents?” I asked again.

“Oh, calm down, Human. We'll get there.” He waved his hand and continued talking.

“I'm going to rip you apart with my own hands. But since you're pretty, I'm going to make it a quick death, so you don't suffer.”

I parted my lips to speak, but I couldn't say a word.

It turned out that Gavemorth was a safe haven. And he wasn't able to attack me there. I brought myself to him.

Which was painful, now that I thought about it.

“What about that thing which took my parents away?” I asked in a small voice. He didn't respond, instead he waved his hand and something appeared on the wall.

My parents. They were fine.

So, what had I seen? And if my parents were still in the mansion, where was this place? I looked around warily.

“It was nice toying with you, Human. Welcome to my world.” He laughed maniacally.

The scenery warped, giving way to a dangerous looking place. I looked down and gasped. I was standing above a little piece of land surrounded by burning fire.

“Why don't we begin?” He chuckled.
