Chapter Fifty-Nine

Mirah
Xavier wasn't bluffing when he said I'd need some strength. It didn't take long to find out what he was talking about. Tied down on the bed, with both of my hands pinned down by some pretty ladies, I regretted why I'd refused to eat. My body ached, from the rigorous body wash my skin had undergone in the past few hours.
“Spread your legs,” One of them ordered.
My body obeyed, even against my wish. I tried to clamp them back together, but both legs remained spread out.
One of the ladies produced a thick stick, and held it towards my thigh.
“What is that?” I asked with a shaky voice.
“Getting you ready for cleansing.” One of them said, in response to my question.
“What cleansing?” I asked, but none of them answered me.
Thirty minutes later, I was standing before a large mirror. I looked beautiful, and couldn't resist a smile. But then, I saw the reflection of someone behind me, and jerked away.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, my brows knitting together.
“That's a funny question, considering the fact that I own this place.” He snickered, and I backed away, till I hit a nearby wall.
“I'm not here to hurt you. The ladies are done with the cleansing, I see.” He roamed his eyes over my body.
“W-what-” I didn't get to speak, when the scenery warped. Suddenly, we were in a dark looking place.
Everywhere smelt strange. It smelt like death.
I wanted to get away from there. Run. Disappear.
When I looked back at the direction where Xavier was standing, fear engulfed me. His eyes blazed a bright golden, and on his head was a gray crown. He held a golden staff, as he went over to sit on the throne.
A force suddenly pulled me down to my knees.
“That's right. You bow before a king.”
Blood roared in my ears. I was a very unlucky woman. In my next life, I'd probably hope to be a man.
“I'm just a human. I can serve none of your purposes.”
“You, Mirah is Prince Ezekiel's Achilles heel. Your role is essential in this intricate puzzle of mine.” He casually leaned against his throne.
My eyes watered. “What is this place? It's doing something to me.” I could barely hear myself.
“This is Zandaya. A place of pain and torture. A place where your fears would be used against you.” He stared directly into my eyes.
“You'd watch, as I end the life of your beloved. And then, I'm going to mark you as mine.” He laughed cynically.
Voices. I could hear voices. Very loud voices.
“What do you want?” I whispered.
“More like I desire. I want revenge. Revenge against all those who took away what originally belonged to me.” His irises swirled with power.
I couldn't respond. My body was getting weaker every moment.
“Even though I can't bear to hurt you, I have to do it. Every single pain inflicted on you, directly affects your boyfriend.”
“He's not my boyfriend,” I interrupted him.
“Beautiful. I know you'd deny him someday-” He began clapping his hands, when I interrupted him.
“He's my man! He's my lover. He's a hundred times the man you'd never be.” I forced myself up, stifling a wince.
“And you should know how powerful he is. You feel threatened by him.” The best defense was offense. I wanted to stall for time.
“Zeke promised to protect me. You might have succeeded this time, but don't gloat in victory for long. He'd come for me.” The pain in my legs was becoming stronger.
I saw raw anger and jealousy burn in his eyes. “How dare you?! On your knees!” He slammed his staff on the ground, and I fell to the ground with a loud shout.
I didn't give him the joy of seeing me in pain. “I might be a mere human, but I'd never let you hurt my man.”
His face darkened, and he sprang up from the throne. He was in front of me in two strides.
My eyes dilated, as he suddenly lifted me off the ground with his hand on my throat.
“I like feisty women. Do you place more value on Zeke's life than yours?”
I didn't back down even though I was on the verge of choking to death.
“Let me go.”
He tightened his hold. “Let's see if you can maintain that brave front of yours, once he dies. Now, let's get to work.” He pushed me to the floor.
I let out a pained shriek, as I felt the sprain of my ankle. Sweat ran down my back.
And for the first time in my life, I hated the fact that I was human. I hated the fact that I was powerless.
I hated the fact that I was a weak pathetic girl, whom anyone thought they could control.
I looked up at him with a look that could kill. “Don't you dare.”
Surprise shone in his eyes for a moment, before it vanished. He produced a sharp looking knife, and pulled up my hand.
I tried to free myself, but he held on tightly.
“I warned you, Princess. Don't test my patience.”
My eyes widened, as the knife hovered over my hand.
One slash, and my blood began spilling on the floor.
Pain.
I couldn't take any more of it.
“Pl-please,” I whispered, willing to stop experiencing such excruciating pain.
There was no pity in his eyes. “I'm going to break you.”
“Kitten,” A voice called out gently. It was unmistakably Zeke's. I shut my eyes even more tightly. I was probably dreaming.
His hand caressed mine, and I sighed at the feel.
“Who did this to you?”
My eyes jerked open at his hardened voice. He was staring down at me. I wasn't dreaming, like I thought.
“How did-” My lips parted.
After going through a bout of torture from that bastard, he'd thrown me into a cell manned by gargoyles. I'd fallen asleep while crying.
“We fell into his trap,” Hostility shone in Zeke's eyes, and I couldn't help but stretch my hand towards him.
He caught it midway, and gently held with his hands. “Did he do this to you?”
Tears poured out from my eyes, effectively shutting out my ability to respond. I threw myself at him. Thankfully, Xavier hadn't cuffed either of us.
“I knew you'd come. I missed you.” The tears rained down faster.
He tensed for a moment, before his hands went up my back. “Shush, Kitten. I'm here now.”
I pressed myself even harder against his body, as if to reassure myself that he wasn't going to disappear again.
“I missed you,” I whisper-cried.
He tightened his hold. “It's okay, Kitten. I'm going to get us out of here.” I heard the determination in his voice, and pulled away.
