Chapter Forty-Six

Mirah
Anger.
Not at anyone, but at myself.
I allowed this. Every single thing that's happened. From my father, to Zeke. If I'd been strong-willed, my father wouldn't have tried to force me into marrying Jayden.
Now that I've finally ended things with Zeke, I expected to feel-
Well, I didn't know what I was expecting to feel. But drowning myself in some shots of alcohol, locking myself in, and burying myself in my bed sheets wasn't it.
I didn't need to see my reflection in the mirror, to know that I had dark circles. I hadn't eaten in days, and I felt so weak.
“If you don't open the door this instant, I'll have to pull it down!” Nessa's yell outside my door made me wince.
From experience, I knew she was really going to follow through with her threat. Cursing as much as my strength allowed me, I slowly clambered down the bed.
“Sweet Lord!” Nessa's eyes widened dramatically, when I opened the door.
“What?” I groaned. Surely, I didn't look so bad, did I?
“What the fuck happened to your face?” She pushed past me into my room.
Okay, I looked bad.
I was about to speak, when she interrupted me. “You better don't tell me it's nothing.”
I sighed. I knew she could tell I'd broken up with Zeke. I could see it in her eyes. By asking me, she was indirectly asking for permission to butt into my personal life.
I came over to sit beside her on the bed. “I broke up with Zeke.”
She didn't act surprised, or pretend not to be aware. Instead, she bent her head low, pondering over my words.
“You want him back, don't you?” She asked softly.
“At this point, I don't know what I want.” I wrung my hand, and fell back on the bed.
“Yeah, but you should also know skipping work, meals, and locking yourself in, isn't part of what you want. You look awful.” Nessas wasn't one to mince on her words.
She always said it the way it was.
“I'm twenty-two now, with the worst luck with men. I guess I have to visit dating apps once more.” I thought aloud.
“And your father?”
And Zeke?
I knew that was actually what she wanted to ask.
“He practically disowned me, so I'm longer part of Aurels' family.” I rose to my feet abruptly, and I almost stumbled. Same moment my treacherous stomach chose to rumble.
“Someone has to eat, before checking out ‘dating apps,’” Nessa chuckled.
A glance at my mirror, and I understood why Nessa shrieked so loudly when she saw me. I looked like-
Shit.
My hair was tousled, bearing resemblance to a bird's nest. Not really, but almost close. My lips were parched, and there was an unusual tired look in my hitherto gleaming eyes. My cheeks were sunken in, and the dark circles around my eyes completed my zombie look.
I turned to Nessa, who was on her phone. As always.
“You know, forget what I said about eating. I need to take a longgg shower.” I sprinted into the bathroom, without waiting for her response.
An hour later, as I sat across the island, I finally felt human again. Nessa placed a plate of pancakes alongside apples and strawberry and honey as topping. There was also whipped cream on the side of the pancakes.
Just the way I loved it.
“Have I told you how much I loved you, before?” I helped myself to the pancakes, while scrolling through the dating site for a suitable match.
“You're just hungry, young lady.” Nessa retorted, sitting beside me. Her pancakes were bare; without fruits and cream.
She wasn't a keen sweet-tooth as I was.
I rolled my eyes at her words, and went back to my phone.
“Aiden Fred?” I read out loudly.
“Spoilt heir of Freds' Jewelries.” Nessa said, without missing a beat. I nodded, as an image matched the name in my mind.
I knew him. Rumored to be a playboy, and a spoilt heir- which was true, the thirty years old young man was a heartache to his prim and proper parents.
I scrolled past, and paused on another profile. Okay, this one looked clean and handsome.
“Raymond Caleb,” I read out. “He's a lawyer.” I added, for the benefit of Nessa.
“I haven't heard of him before.” Nessa's brows knitted together.
Exactly the reason why I was going to choose him. I needed someone with a low profile.
Nessa must have read my intention, because her mouth curved into an “Oh.”
I wasted no time texting my new date. He was online, and texted back.
We agreed to meet up later that evening, at a well-known restaurant. He chose somewhere classy, and elegant which marked him off as ‘rich,’ in my standards.
I looked up to see Nessa staring at me.
“What?”
She sighed. “Are you really doing this?” She asked, with an exhale.
“You bet, I am.” I couldn't think of any better way to divert my mind from Zeke other than giving dating a chance, again.
I'd always known we never stood a chance. I was a human, he was a vampire. Our destinies were never meant to cross.
‘I'll be down for a few more days, and that'll be all. I'd forget him, and everything would be fine again.’
Her phone lit up. A dark look masked her face, as she glanced at it. “Well, I have to go now. Work,” she said.
I nodded in understanding.
“Let me know how it goes,” she called out, as she padded out of the kitchen.
With the issue of a blind date finally settled, I turned back to my pancakes. But just like other days, the thought of Zeke made me lose my appetite.
I pushed the plate aside, and leaned my head on the island, letting my tears stream down freely.
I glanced at my silver-edged wrist watch impatiently, as I waited for my blind date to arrive. This was why I hated blind dates. For whatever reason, they were always late. And this one was no exception. I gulped down my glass of water, as if doing so would tamper down my anger.
Thirty minutes more.
If he wasn't here in thirty minutes, I'd leave.
“Mirabella Aurel?” I heard a calm feminine-maculine voice ask. I looked up to a pair of twinkling eyes, partially shielded by his brownish hair.
“Yes?” I recognized him, even before he introduced himself.
