Chapter 18 Chapter Eighteen

Chapter 18 Chapter Eighteen
Chapter Eighteen

                 Mirah

I hurried after him, in an attempt to stop him. “Fucking let me out of here!” I yelled, just as he shut the door on my face. I heard the click of the keyhole, and I furiously pounded at the door. When I tried pulling it open, it didn't budge. Zeke hadn't gone. I could feel his presence, and his scent was still there.

Tears stung the back of my eyes, as I weakly fell to the ground. “What are you doing?” I'd lost count of how many times I asked that particular question.

First was to my father, and now, it was to Zeke. Silence permeated from the other end, before a low voice broke it.

“Keeping you locked in, until you gain control of your emotions.”

I remained in that position for as long as I could. Listened until I heard his footsteps die down the hallway. Listened as my heart numbed with pain. Listened until I fell into a haunted sleep.

The next few days passed by in a blur. Mostly of me crying myself to sleep each night. Continuing from where I stopped during the day, and the cycle started all over again. Steam rolled off my body as I stepped out of the shower on Monday evening. I dried off my hair, and walked over to the bed. I ignored the tray containing my dinner, and hugged myself. Breakfast had been taken away. And it was just as they'd brought it.

Untouched.

I bit on my lower lip hard, wincing as the coppery taste of blood flowed into my mouth. I thought Zeke would relent as the days passed by. But as the days rolled on, it became evident that he was truly keeping me imprisoned here.

The sooner I came to the realization, hatred sprouted in my heart. I cringed at my naive self ever thinking that he had even the teeny-weeny bit of feeling for me.

You didn’t imprison someone you had feelings for.

The rattle of the window jutted through my thoughts, and I jumped. The window was closed, as I couldn't risk anyone coming into the room. Although I doubted that Zeke would allow it. I looked closely at the window, and not seeing anyone, I settled under the sheets again.

Another rattle upon another one, finally made me clamber down the bed. I moved cautiously towards the window. Tentatively, I pulled the bolt away.

A shadow emerged from the other end, and with a scream I moved back. My heart raced, and I took a defensive stance.

“Relax, human girl.” A somewhat familiar voice said. I backed away, while looking to see who it was.

The figure finally came into sight, and I subconsciously relaxed. “Alex?”

The handsome vampire prince had a grin on his face, dressed in blue pants and draped in a black cloak. His gray eyes matched his father's.

My body went on full alert once again. This man had tried to kill me once. And I was all alone. He could try to-

“I'm not here to kill you.” He chuckled, obviously reading my thoughts. My face was probably like an open book, at that moment.

“Why are you here?” I forced myself to ask, while inwardly hoping the crack in my voice wouldn't give away how afraid I was.

He floated into the room, and landed on the ground. “Is that how you welcome your guests?” He backed a wall, and trained his eyes on me.

With a bloodsucker in my room while I was alone, the only thing I could think of was a mode of escape. All other thoughts vanished.

“Although I'm a vampire, slavery has been abolished since the nineties.” He clicked his fingers.

“What are you trying to say?” Trying as I could, I didn't make sense of his words.

“Zeke locked you in, didn't he?” He continued with a mocking chuckle.

Indignation finally loosened up my tongue. “Coming from someone who tried to kill me.” I snapped.

His eyes darkened, and I took a step back once again.

“Your words are tempting, human girl.” He ran his tongue against his lower lip slowly, and my head pounded furiously.

“The name's Mirabella.” I retorted.

“But like I said, human girl, I'm not here to kill you.” If he heard my words, he ignored it.

My lips parted to speak, but he beat me to it.

“Do you know where your darling Zeke is at that moment?” He asked with another finger flick.

I shook my head, but my heartbeat accelerated at the mention of Zeke.

“He's not my darling-”

“Can you let me speak?” He cut through my words. “I'm not here to have a banter with you, human.”

Sensing the irritation beneath his voice, and not wanting to become dinner for the vampire, I decided it was finally time to fall silent.

“Zeke is at his in-law 's house, making preparations. And need I tell you what the preparations are for?” He grinned.

Blood roared in my ears, as I tuned out the rest of his words.

In-law? Zeke was-

I was suddenly hyperventilating, the world rotating and I couldn't breathe.

“...You can make your choice.” Alex's mockery-laced voice sliced through the moment. I gasped, and snapped out of it. He was still standing there, looking at me like a predator would a prey.

“What choice?” I asked in a tiny voice, as I gripped the hem of my skirt hard.

“I can take you away from here, before Zeke comes back.” He offered, but alarm bells went off in my head.

I wasn't a fool. He'd lured me away from a party, and had almost drained my blood. To trust him would be a stupid action.

“And what's the second option?” I looked past him at the open window.

“You can decide to stay here, while Zeke gets married to another woman. And you'd remain a prisoner here forever.” He shrugged with twinkling eyes.

The thought of it left a boulder on my chest. I felt a pang of pain in my belly, and I doubled over.

“Darcel.” I muttered.

“Oh, you've met his fiancèe already?” He asked with a short laugh.
