A Bit of Freedom
I felt my heart in my chest as i ran through the pathway.
“Come on!!!” Terrovon yelled, looking back every once in a while to make sure that I was still following him and I was. The guard, the ones that were left after the invasion blocked the entrance, but that did not seem to stop him.
He skillfully passed by them, hitting some of them with the small knife he had in his pocket.
“Where…” i tried to speak, taking in as much air as i could. “Where are we going!” i called as we approached the front door of the castle.
“Do you trust me?” he said, looking me straight in the eye.
I gasped, my lungs burning at this point. “Ter…. this is… no time for sentimental talks, there are guards on our tail who no doubt want to kill us or at least want to throw us into prison so…”
“Mika… do you trust me?” he said, looking at me with a bit of desperation in his eyes the guards were closing in on us.
“y-es” i said, a bit unsure with how he was acting out.
“very well then” he ran to me, pulling me along as we both ran out of the castle, but he did not stop there. We entered the woods, the trees slapping in the face as we moved by but i did not slow down.
The adrenaline pumping through my veins pushed me not even bothering with the fact that i was been hit.
Then we stopped.
It was quiet.
No footsteps, no screaming, nothing. We were only met with the sounds of birds and rodents in the area.
“we would be safe here” he called, sitting on the floor.
He looked unbothered, as though we had not just run for about 15 kilometers. He was even much so, still breathing just fine, me on the other hand? It looked like i was going to pass out.
“are you good?” he turned to look at me after a while, the look of concern evident on his face.
I nodded, not really knowing what to say.
“what now?” i asked, the pressing question that had flooded my mind since we passed the doors of the castle came out of my mouth finally.
“well one thing i know, we would not be going back anytime soon.” i nodded, already knowing that.
Darius’ jealousy was most definitely going to make him either kill me or Terrovon, or make our lives miserable all together “I kind of figured that one out myself” i said, giving a small smile as i let myself finally rest on the floor, taking my spot right next to him.
“do you regret it?” he asked after a while, the silence between us a bit relaxing.
“regret what?” i looked at him, genuinely wondering what her meant.
“i mean… we are out here in the woods. I cannot really give you a better thing at the moment. While at the castle, you would have…”
“are you crazy?” i asked, looking at him like he had grown a second head. “this… right here was the thing i was looking for, was the thing i needed” i said, closing my eyes a bit to let the fresh forest scent fill my nostrils. “i was scared you know.” i smiled, thinking of the times i thought there was no place i was going to go so i tolerated what Darius did. “i did not think it would be possible for me to ever leave with my family gone and all that, but you basically pulled me out. The castle might have been physically comfortable, but there definitely was no peace of mind there.”
“and you think you will find it with me?” his question for some reason shook me,
“would you want to not give me peace of mind?” i asked slowly, looking at him with suspicion evident in my gaze.
He rolled his eyes, ruffling my hair a bit before he smiled. “you know that is not what i meant smart pants” he let out a laugh.
Something about the way he said it felt lighter.
A small smile stretched across my face. ‘i guess i am not the only one that needed this escape.’ i thought to myself, laying on the floor as i looked at the now evening sky.
“what do you think happened to the breakfast you prepared for me?” i asked, referring to the breakfast he wanted to give me earlier before the whole ordeal started
He shrugged, joining me to look at the evening sky. “i don’t know? Maybe one of the men that came for the invasion was hungry?”
I lit up at that, turning to my side so that i could look at him properly “the thought crossed my mind earlier!” i said the excitement for something as stupid as that shook me to my core, but i did not mind it. “do you think they would break the ceramic plates after they are done? Or would they leave it on the table like respectful men” i said pretending to be in deep thoughts as i spoke
“well i hope not!” Terrovon sat up dramatically, playing along. “i do not wish to go back to the castle again in this lifetime, but one thing for sure is i do hope that the flowers would be healthy! They were beautiful”
A bit of sadness struck me for a bit as my mind drifted to them.
“they were” i said after a while, my sudden change of mood evident in my voice.
He caught it in an instant, looking at me with something i could not really pin.
Not that i was looking quite closely to catch it anyways.
“hey” he called softly, looking as me with that smile. “where we are going, i am going to plant only the best for you. You know that right?” he asked, looking at me with hope in his eyes.
“where we are going?” i said, not wanting to show how much that had instantly made me excited.
“well yeah” he said sarcastically rolling his eyes at me “you did not think i was going to let us stay here like some homeless people”
“Ter? We are homeless people” i said.
“oh hush…” he said but you could hear the instant happiness in his voice…
