Chapter 32 - The Drive Home

The engine of Ethan’s sleek black Audi purred as they drove down the quiet, moonlit road. Sophia sat in the passenger seat, her head resting against the window, lost in thought. The night had been intense, overwhelming even, and now, as they headed back to her apartment, a million questions swirled in her mind. She knew next to nothing about him—Ethan, the mysterious Alpha who had somehow become the center of her world in such a short time.

Sophia turned her head to look at him. His hands gripped the steering wheel with a casual confidence, the faint glow of the dashboard lights casting shadows on his strong features. For a moment, she hesitated, unsure of how to start the conversation. But her curiosity gnawed at her, and she couldn’t stay silent any longer.

"Can I ask you something?" she began, her voice soft but steady.

Ethan glanced over at her, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "You can ask me anything, Sophia."

She bit her lip, trying to gather her thoughts. "You’ve told me... about being a werewolf and the whole mate bond thing. But... I don’t know anything about you. The real you. Who are you, Ethan? Before all of this, what was your life like?"

Ethan’s smile faded slightly, and he was quiet for a moment as if considering how much to reveal. "It’s... complicated," he said, his tone more serious now. "I was born into this life, into the pack. From a young age, I was groomed to take over as Alpha, to lead. My father was a strong leader, and I was always expected to follow in his footsteps. There wasn’t much room for anything else."

Sophia nodded, listening intently. "Did you ever want something different?" she asked.

Ethan chuckled softly, a deep, rumbling sound. "At times, yes. I think everyone has moments where they wonder what life would be like if things were... simpler. But the pack is my family. It’s my responsibility. There’s a bond between us, one that can’t easily be broken. I’ve accepted that this is my path."

Sophia looked out the window, trying to imagine what it would be like to carry that kind of burden. "It sounds... lonely," she said quietly.

Ethan’s gaze softened, and he reached over, his hand resting on hers. "It was," he admitted, his voice low. "Until I found you."

Her heart skipped a beat at his words, but she quickly shook off the warmth they brought, pressing forward with her questions. "What about before you became Alpha? Did you have a normal life? Friends? Dreams?"

Ethan nodded, his thumb absently stroking the back of her hand. "I had friends in the pack, but it’s different when you’re the future Alpha. There’s always a distance, a certain respect that keeps you from being completely equal with the others. As for dreams... I didn’t have many. I didn’t think much beyond the pack. My duty always came first."

Sophia tilted her head, studying him. "But there must have been something. Something you wanted for yourself, not just for the pack."

Ethan was quiet for a long moment, his eyes focused on the road ahead. Finally, he sighed. "I guess... I wanted freedom. The ability to choose my own path. But when you’re born into a role like mine, you don’t get to make that choice. The pack comes first, always."

Sophia squeezed his hand, a pang of sympathy hitting her chest. She knew a little something about duty and sacrifice, though her life had been shaped by very different circumstances. "I get that," she said softly. "I’ve spent my whole life trying to be something for someone else. Trying to live up to my mother’s expectations, even after she was gone. It’s exhausting."

Ethan’s grip tightened on her hand, his voice gentle as he responded. "You’re not alone anymore, Sophia. You don’t have to carry that weight by yourself."

She smiled faintly, though doubt still lingered in the back of her mind. Could she really trust this bond between them? It all felt so surreal, so fast. But the pull she felt toward him—the warmth, the safety—was undeniable.

"So... what now?" Sophia asked after a long pause. "I mean, where do we go from here? How do I fit into your world?"

Ethan’s gaze flicked toward her, his expression serious. "You’re my mate, Sophia. That means you’re a part of my life now, whether you like it or not. The pack will have to accept you because I won’t give you up. But... I’ll be honest, it won’t be easy. There are some who won’t be happy about this."

Sophia’s stomach tightened at the thought. She had already faced enough challenges in her life—did she really want to take on the added pressure of fitting into a world she didn’t understand?

"I don’t know if I’m ready for that," she admitted quietly. "I’m just... me. I don’t know how to be a Luna or whatever it is you need."

Ethan smiled gently, his thumb brushing her skin in a soothing gesture. "You don’t have to be anything but yourself. The bond between us... it’s enough. We’ll figure out the rest together."

Sophia exhaled slowly, feeling a strange mix of relief and apprehension. The bond between them was undeniable, but everything was moving so fast. Her life had been turned upside down, and now she was being asked to step into a world she didn’t fully understand.

But one thing was clear—Ethan wasn’t just a part of her life now. He was becoming the center of it.

As they pulled into her apartment complex, the tension in the air shifted. There was no denying the growing connection between them, but the future loomed with uncertainty. Sophia knew one thing for sure—she wasn’t ready to walk away from whatever this was, not yet.

And maybe, just maybe, she never would be.

The car came to a stop, and Ethan turned to face her, his wolf's yellow eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. "We’ll take it one step at a time, Sophia. I promise."

She nodded, her heart pounding as she reached for the door handle. "One step at a time," she repeated softly, stepping out of the car and into the night.

But as she looked back at him, her thoughts swirling, one thing became clear. This was just the beginning.
