Sophia’s steps felt heavy as she made her way toward the park. The night air was cool, the kind that left a slight chill on her skin and made her mind sharper. Her heart was pounding in her chest, the sound of her footsteps swallowed by the quiet stillness around her. The streetlights cast long shadows on the ground, but she barely noticed them as she approached the park, her thoughts consumed by Ethan.
What was she even going to say? Would he listen, or would it just be another attempt to pull her deeper into his world, a world she wasn’t sure she belonged in? And the bond—the bond was overwhelming, like a string tied around her heart, pulling tighter the closer she got.
As the park came into view, she spotted him. Ethan was sitting on a bench beneath a large oak tree, his head tilted slightly as though he was listening for her, sensing her presence before she even appeared. When their eyes met, Sophia felt the pull again, that invisible connection between them tightening. She clenched her fists, determined not to let it cloud her judgment.
Ethan stood up slowly, his movements graceful and controlled, but Sophia could see the tension in his shoulders. He looked serious, his bright blue eyes reflecting the moonlight, but there was a softness to his expression, something almost pleading. It made her chest tighten.
“Sophia,” he said, his voice low but filled with emotion. “Thank you for coming.”
She didn’t respond right away, her gaze flickering from his face to the darkened path behind him. Every fiber of her being screamed to turn around, to run away from the intensity of the bond and everything that came with it, but she couldn’t. Not now. Not after everything.
“You wanted to explain,” she finally said, crossing her arms, her voice steadier than she felt. “So, talk.”
Ethan’s jaw clenched, and for a moment, it looked like he was struggling to find the right words. He took a step closer, but Sophia instinctively took a step back, keeping a small distance between them. The hurt in his eyes was undeniable, but she wasn’t ready to close that gap just yet.
“I should’ve told you everything from the start,” Ethan began, his voice strained. “About me. About what you mean to me. I didn’t want to scare you away, but I can see now that keeping secrets has done more harm than good.”
Sophia raised an eyebrow, her arms tightening around herself. “Yeah, you think?”
Ethan exhaled slowly. “Lila showing up this morning… I get how that must’ve looked, but I swear to you, there’s nothing between us. She’s my Beta. My second-in-command in the pack. That’s all.”
Sophia’s eyes narrowed. “But why does she look at me like I’m some sort of threat? Like I don’t belong here?”
He looked away for a moment, as if gathering his thoughts. “She’s protective of me. Of the pack. She’s known me her whole life, and the idea of someone outside the pack, someone human, being my mate… it’s not something everyone in our world understands. But that doesn’t mean she’s right. You do belong here, Sophia. You belong with me.”
His words stirred something inside her, a mixture of anger and longing that she couldn’t fully explain. She wanted to believe him, wanted to let the bond take over and pull her into his arms, but the rational part of her mind still held on to doubt.
“I don’t know if I can do this, Ethan,” she said, her voice quieter now. “This whole world of yours—it’s not mine. I’m just... me. A girl trying to get through life. You’re asking me to give up everything I know for something I don’t even understand.”
Ethan’s eyes softened as he took another step toward her, his hands outstretched but not touching her, as if waiting for her permission. “I’m not asking you to give up anything, Sophia. I’m asking you to trust me. To let me show you what we could be. What this bond between us means.”
Sophia’s heart raced, the weight of his words sinking into her. She looked away, trying to regain control of the emotions swirling inside her. The mate bond was so strong, pulling her toward him, making her want him in ways that terrified her. And yet, she couldn’t deny the truth of her own feelings anymore. She wanted him, too—more than she had ever wanted anyone.
“I can’t pretend like this doesn’t scare me,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “But I also can’t pretend that I don’t feel this… connection between us. It’s like I’m being pulled in two different directions.”
Ethan stepped closer again, closing the distance between them. His hands gently cupped her face, his touch sending shivers down her spine. “Then let me be the direction you choose, Sophia. Let me show you that this bond is worth everything.”
Her breath caught in her throat as she stared into his eyes, the intensity of the moment overwhelming her. The rational part of her screamed to walk away, but her heart—and the bond—pulled her in closer. She felt herself leaning into his touch, the warmth of his hands grounding her.
“I’m scared, Ethan,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “But I want to trust you. I want to believe that this is real.”
“It is real,” Ethan whispered, his lips brushing against her forehead. “I’ll never let anything hurt you, Sophia. You’re mine.”
The words sent a shockwave through her, and before she could stop herself, she closed the remaining space between them, pressing her lips to his. The kiss was soft at first, tentative, but it quickly deepened, fueled by the intensity of their bond and the emotions they had both been trying to suppress.
In that moment, nothing else mattered. Not Lila, not the pack, not the world outside. It was just them—Sophia and Ethan, bound together by something neither of them could explain, but both of them felt down to their very core.
And for the first time in days, Sophia felt like maybe, just maybe, she was exactly where she was supposed to be.
