Chapter 12 - Confrontation

Sophia's walk home felt longer than usual, each step weighed down by the impending conversation with Ethan. The cool night air did little to calm her nerves, and every time her phone buzzed, she jumped, half expecting another message from him. As much as she dreaded it, a part of her couldn’t shake the growing curiosity. She needed answers, but she wasn’t sure she was ready for the truth.

The lights of her apartment building came into view, casting long shadows over the street. Sophia’s heart sped up as she scanned the sidewalk for any sign of Ethan. It didn’t take long. There he was, leaning against his black Audi, his broad frame unmistakable even in the dim light. He looked up as she approached, his blue eyes catching hers immediately.

Her steps faltered for a moment, but she pressed on, determined not to show any hesitation. She had questions—questions that needed answering. But as she got closer, she could feel the tension between them, thick and electric.

“Sophia,” Ethan greeted her, his voice low and serious. He pushed off from the car, closing the distance between them. “We need to talk.”

She crossed her arms, trying to steady herself. “Yeah, I figured that from your message. What do you want, Ethan?”

He hesitated for a moment, his jaw clenching as if he were struggling to find the right words. “I know all of this is overwhelming, and I get that it sounds crazy. But you need to know the truth, all of it.”

Sophia raised an eyebrow. “I already know you think I’m your ‘mate.’ You told me that last night. What more is there?”

Ethan took a deep breath, stepping closer. “It’s not just about being my mate, Sophia. It’s about what that means—for both of us.”

Sophia felt a strange pull in the pit of her stomach. His presence was almost magnetic, like being near him activated something primal inside her, something she didn’t fully understand. She forced herself to stay focused, though. “You keep saying that, but I’m still waiting for an explanation.”

Ethan’s gaze softened, and he ran a hand through his thick curls, clearly frustrated with himself. “You’ve probably heard stories about werewolves, myths and legends, right? But what they don’t tell you is what it means for us to find our mate. It’s not just an emotional connection—it’s physical, it’s spiritual, it’s... binding.”

Sophia blinked, trying to make sense of his words. “Binding? What does that even mean?”

“It means once I found you, once I realized you were my mate, I can’t... I won’t be able to stay away from you. The connection between us is too strong. It pulls at me, constantly. And I know you feel it too.”

Her heart thudded painfully in her chest, and she wanted to deny it, wanted to brush off the idea that she felt anything for him. But deep down, she couldn’t lie to herself. There was something there—something unexplainable, and it scared her.

“I don’t even know you,” she finally said, her voice shaky. “How am I supposed to believe in all of this? Just because you say we’re ‘mates’ doesn’t mean I’m ready to throw my entire life away for you.”

Ethan’s face darkened, but not with anger. It was a look of frustration, of helplessness. “You’re not throwing your life away, Sophia. I’m not asking you to give up anything. I’m just asking you to give this a chance—to let me explain everything.”

Sophia took a step back, shaking her head. “And what happens if I don’t? What if I don’t want this... this bond?”

Ethan’s eyes flashed with something primal, and for a second, she saw the wolf inside him. “If you reject me, it won’t just hurt me—it’ll hurt you too. The bond goes both ways, Sophia. If you deny it, we both suffer.”

She swallowed hard, her throat suddenly dry. “So, you’re saying I don’t have a choice?”

Ethan stepped closer, his gaze intense but pleading. “You always have a choice, Sophia. I’d never force you into anything. But you need to understand what’s at stake here. This bond is real, and the longer you fight it, the harder it’s going to be for both of us.”

Sophia’s mind raced. Every fiber of her being told her to run, to get as far away from this madness as possible. But at the same time, she couldn’t shake the pull she felt toward him, the way her body seemed to react to his presence without her consent.

“I don’t know if I can do this,” she whispered, more to herself than to him.

Ethan’s expression softened, and he reached out, gently taking her hand. The warmth of his touch sent a shiver down her spine. “I’m not asking for everything right now. Just... don’t shut me out. Let me show you what this could be.”

Sophia hesitated, staring down at their joined hands. Part of her wanted to pull away, to run back to the safety of her old, predictable life. But another part of her—the part that felt the strange pull toward him—wanted to stay. To see where this path led, even if it terrified her.

Finally, she nodded, her voice barely audible. “Okay. But I need time.”

Ethan exhaled in relief, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “You’ll have all the time you need. I promise.”

They stood there for a moment, the weight of their conversation hanging in the air. Finally, Ethan let go of her hand and stepped back.

“I’ll let you get some rest,” he said softly. “But just know... I’m here. Whenever you’re ready.”

Sophia watched as he turned and walked back to his car, the engine roaring to life as he drove away into the night. She stood there, frozen in place, her heart pounding in her chest.

She wasn’t sure what she had just agreed to, but one thing was certain: her life would never be the same again.

As she finally turned toward her apartment, the full weight of Ethan’s words hit her. This bond, this connection... it was real. And now, she had to figure out what it meant for her future.
