Chapter 13: It's been four hundred long years

Chapter 13

Thane’s POV

‘’I understand, but we still need that item in the inheritance for when we find my master, besides, we still don't know of her whereabouts,’’ Lucas ended, his voice firm as my eyes glowed and I remained completely still.

There had always been a bitter power struggle in the vampire realm. It had been an ongoing war, but it had all stopped two hundred years ago when the late king had died.

He had passed a new dictate that the next ruler of the vampire realm would be the one to find the inheritance he had hidden. For two hundred years, the only clue we had was that the inheritance was hidden somewhere on this planet called Earth.

As a result, vampires from the other city heads, who were also eligible for the throne, had moved in with their troops to settle on Earth. Each of them was now working individually and in secret to find the hidden inheritance for their own selfish interests.

Me, I was just doing it to spite my mother and brother. I was also the appointed War Lord, so I needed to keep a careful balance between the factions.

If I didn't, the whole human race might go extinct in the crossfire, and I didn't want that happening. Not yet, anyway. I was waiting for someone.

Besides, there were rumors that the inheritance contained powerful items and relics. What I specifically needed was the immortality root, my mate will be needing it when i finally find her.

‘’We are here,’’ Lucas spoke up softly from the passenger side, pulling me out of my thoughts. The car door on his side was pushed open, and he stepped out.

I moved deftly as the car door on my side was pulled open and I stepped out, taking in the environment around me. We were parked by the side of the road in what looked like a housing estate, but it seemed completely deserted.

There wasn't even a flicker of light or an ounce of sound coming from any of the run-down houses that were closely stacked together. The whole area was eerily silent, as if it had been abandoned for years.

‘’This is the building where it happened. All the occupants of this apartment just vanished,’’ Lucas said as he walked up towards me, his hands slipping into his pockets.

My eyes remained glued on the building as I slowly walked across the empty street that was lit by just a lone, flickering street lamp. My tobacco was still lodged in between my teeth, and I didn't move it.

I could faintly make out the shape of shadows being watching from the blinds of the other apartments nearby as Lucas and I made our way up the wet stairs to the five-story apartment. We appeared in a long corridor, and I turned to my left, picking the first door there.

The door creaked open with a loud protest of its weak hinges as I pushed it open. The whole interior of the room was filled with darkness, and the windows were open, letting in a cold, damp breeze. The scent of stale air and something else, something I couldn't quite place, hung in the air.

‘’How long ago did this happen?’’ I asked, my voice echoing slightly in the empty space as my boot landed heavily on the carpet clad floor. We had walked into what looked to be a very small parlor, and the air was still and stale.

‘’About four hours ago. There doesn’t seem to be any signs of struggle,’’ Lucas replied. I heard the soft click of his flashlight as he moved further into the room, bending over to find clues, but I already knew he wasn't going to find anything.

‘’You wouldn’t find anything here. It would be much more easier to probe those bastards about the incident than searching through heaven knows how many rooms in this apartment,’’ I said, my voice filled with a hint of annoyance.

I came to a stop in front of a wall that was filled with pictures, most likely of the now-vanished occupants of the house. ‘’Let’s go,’’ I ordered, turning around sharply and heading back for the door.

But just then, I froze in my steps. My body went completely still as I heard the almost inaudible sound of a creak in the old wood coming from my left.

‘’You said everyone in this apartment vanished, didn’t you, Lucas?’’ I asked calmly, my eyes scanning the room before suddenly getting fixed on the double doors of a closet to my left, where the creaking sound had come from.

My fingers went up to pull the half-burnt tobacco from between my lips, and I tossed it to the floor, not even bothering to stomp the light off as it immediately began to burn the carpet under my feet.

‘’Yes…’’ Lucas replied after a while, his voice just as calm as mine. He, too, had picked up on the shift in the air, and in the next second, there were rounds of gunshots aimed at us and from the sound of the bullets, they were wooden ones.

Numerous figures dressed in black from head to toe burst out from different locations in the apartment. From their fast, inhuman movements, I could easily see that they were vampires. My eyes sharpened, and the bullets aimed at me seemed to slow a bit in the air as my body moved with incredible speed, easily dodging out of the way of the bullets.

‘’Lucas, take care of this mess, will you?’’ I chuckled darkly as I stalked out of the door. My footsteps were soon covered up by the sound of grunts and screams of pain, but I kept moving and stepped out back into the cool night air.

These stupid vampires always tried to kill me, every single chance that they got, but I wasn't just a regular vampire.

In the next second, long, black wings sprouted out from my back, and I could hear the collective gasps from the human onlookers hidden in their houses.

But their awe was soon gone as, with just one powerful beat of my long wings, I was propelled with force into the air and out of sight.

The day the one I cared for died, I didn't have a purpose anymore. Now, my new purpose was to to find the reincination of my mate and then i can burn those filty vampires to the ground.

I was going to make them pay. It's been four hundred long years
