Chapter 114: Emotional Testimonies
The courtroom was unusually quiet that morning, the weight of the trial bearing heavily on everyone present.
Nicole sat at her table, fingers intertwined, and watched as the judge took his seat.
Her lawyer was looking over the day's agenda, but Nicole was elsewhere. She was preparing herself for yet another painful revelation.
She barely knew what was coming.
The prosecuting council stood up and called their next witness: "We would like to call Sarah Fury to the stand."
Veronica's eyes quickly widened in shock. How was this possible?
Nicole's head snapped up, and her eyes shot wide in incredulity.
She leaned to her attorney, who avoided her gaze but just fidgeted with her notes. "Sarah?" Nicole whispered with a hint of confusion and accusation.
"It was their decision," her lawyer said very quietly.
The lawyer finally looked back at her. Her expression cautioned her. "They came to me days ago, and I thought it best to let their testimonies speak for themselves."
Before Nicole could respond to her lawyer's revelation, Sarah stood from her chair and made her way to the stand. Wearing a plain navy-blue dress and with the air of assurance replaced by transparent nervousness,
She stopped momentarily before taking the oath, her eyes darting towards Veronica who was sitting ramrod straight at her table.
"Mrs. Sarah Fury," the prosecutor began, "can you tell the court about your involvement in the events surrounding Nicole Okeke's downfall three years ago?"
Sarah swallowed hard, her trembling voice low. "I.... I was involved," she finally admitted, her eyes welling up with tears. "But I didn't realize how far it would go. I thought... I thought it had to do with protection, for our family."
Her words caused Nicole's heart to contort. Protect their family? Had that been the term they'd used?
She looked right into Sarah, whose eyes were everywhere else. "Please continue," invited the prosecutor.
Sarah let out a nervous breath. "Veronica, my mother-in-law, she had some kind of plan. She needed Nicole gone from our lives and Taylor's. She convinced me to help her. It was minor things at first; rumors, tension. But then it escalated."
Her voice cracked, and a tear was wiped off her cheek. "I didn't agree to all of her actions, but I kept quiet. When Nicole was framed at the hotel.... when that thug beat her, I wanted to stop that, yet I did nothing. I'm afraid of Veronica and what she will do if I cross her."
A tear traced its way along Nicole's cheek as the memories flooded back in painful detail in her mind of what Sarah was talking about. The memory of the betrayal, the humiliation, the loss of her unborn child faced her like a tidal wave.
"Do you regret your actions?" She asked.
Sarah nodded vigorously. "Every single day," she said, her voice cracking. "I can't take back what was done, but I can at least admit my part in it. I am so sorry, Nicole."
Nicole's lips shook, but no words left her mouth.
The next called witness was Taylor Fury. Nicole sat frozen in her chair, and her breath caught yet again.
Taylor?
She looked at him, rose to her feet, pale but determined. He fiddled with his tie as he made his way to the stand.
"Mr. Taylor Fury," the prosecutor began, "can you tell the court about your part in the events of the case?
Taylor's face had hesitated; his hands tightened on the edges for support. "I… I was blinded," he said finally, his voice low and even. "By loyalty to my mother, by pride, by arrogance. I trusted her implicitly, believed every word she said about Nicole."
He paused, looking at Nicole for a moment. "I let her convince me that Nicole was a threat, that she was unfaithful, that she was out to destroy us. And I acted on those lies."
Nicole's breath hitched. To hear him say these things aloud was both cathartic and heartbreaking.
"I made the worst choices," Taylor continued, his voice shaking with emotion. "I couldn't let Nicole explain her side to me. I left her when she needed me most. And because of my actions or inactions, I lost her. I lost our child. I lost everything."
The silence in the courtroom was palpable, everywhere was quiet except for the labored sound of Taylor's breathing.
He rubbed his eyes to mask the threatening tears. "I know I can't go back in time and undo what happened," he said, his voice cracking. "But I can take responsibility for it. And I want to do that now."
Nicole blinked rapidly, fighting her own tears.
She'd replayed this moment in her head a thousand times, Taylor down on his knees, confessing to what he'd done, contrition in his voice, but now that it was finally happening, she didn't know what to feel.
As Taylor stepped down from the stand, Nicole's lawyer leaned over and whispered, "They asked to testify. I thought it might help our case."
Nicole nodded slowly, all manner of emotions racing through her mind. She watched as Taylor regained his seat, his head down.
Veronica refused even to glance his way, cold as usual.
During recess, Nicole whisked her lawyer away. "Why didn't you tell me about this?" she whispered firmly but quietly.
"They wanted it to be a surprise," her lawyer said. "They thought it would carry more weight if you heard it for the first time in court."
Nicole sighed, running a hand through her hair. "And you think this helps?"
"I think it shows that not everyone in the Fury family is as unrepentant as Veronica," she said. "And that could make a difference."
She sat silently in the courtroom, her mind replaying Taylor and Sarah's testimonies. Their words ignited in her a mixture of anger, sadness, and something she couldn't name.
She had spent the better part of years building walls around her pain, channeling it into her fight for justice. But now, those walls were shaky; like their words had cracked into its foundation.
At lunchtime, Leo joined her, looking concerned. "Are you okay?" he asked softly.
Nicole nodded, not saying anything and looking into his eyes. "I don't know what to think," she finally said. "Hearing them saying those things, it's like reopening old wounds."
"Maybe that's not such a bad thing," Leo answered with much tenderness. "Perhaps now is time to heal, Nicole."
Nicole's eyes finally met his, her gaze a mess of uncertainty. "I can't let this go, Leo. Not yet."
Leo huffed and leaned back in the chair. "Just promise me you won't lose yourself in the process."
Nicole didn’t respond, but his words lingered in her mind as the court reconvened.
As the day ended, Nicole sat alone in her study, staring at the piles of evidence on her desk.
For a moment, she wondered if this fight was worth the toll it was taking—not just on the Fury family, but on her own heart.
