Mia’s pov
“Good morning mom,” I said, my voice cracking through the air and reaching her ears.
I yawned. I felt extremely tired for some odd reason even though I knew I had a good sleep.
Mom turns around, fork in her hand and with eyes wide, almost as if she was somehow startled to hear my voice so early.
“Oh you’re awake! How was your night? Heard a movie playing when your dad and I passed by your door.” She smiles. “Anything good on the screen?”
Mom usually asked about the movies I watch. It was her way of bonding and trying to know my interests. So it wasn’t weird that she asked. It was just a little strange that her voice had a chirp of knowing. One that kind of made me look at her in suspicion.
Walking further into the kitchen, I leaned against the counter as I replied to her. “Yeah, Jurassic World was really good.”
Well, it was the first thirty minutes or so, I somehow had dozed off halfway through. I didn’t even know when Kade got up to leave to his room.
I was bummed out that I didn’t get my morning kiss from him.
Her brows lift. “Oh that’s the one with the dinosaurs? Your dad loves that movie.” She rolled her eyes with a slight giggle coming out of her mouth.
I nod, pushing myself on a stool. “Yeah that one.”
It was still fairly early and it seems that it was just the two of us who were awake at this moment.
I furrow my brows while she just kept staring at me despite the smell of the sausage burning. “Mom?” I asked confused, arching my neck to the side so I can see the view of the sausage in the pan.
“Hmmm?” She hums looking lost as her eyes stayed glued to my face.
I lift a brow and tear my gaze from the pan to stare at her dazed expression.
What has gotten into her?
“The sausage is burning.” I pointed out, biting my lip to stifle a laugh when her eyes widen in horror and a curse slips out of her mouth.
She whirls around and puts off the stove. “Dammit, Austin’s definitely going to whine about me spoiling his favorite thing to have for breakfast.” She sighs, pushing the fork into the sausage and pulls it out of the pan to place them on napkins to soak up the oil.
“Think ketchup will remove the taste of the bitterness of the burn?” She asked me over her shoulder as she pulls out more of the sausage.

I shrug even though she couldn’t exactly see me.” Maybe. Just give him some mustard with it. It’s not like it’s the end of the world mom.” I snorted out a laugh.
She giggled, agreeing with me. But when she turns around I shift uncomfortably by the weight of her gaze on me.
“Is something on my face?” I laughed unsurely as I lift my hand to my face.
She smiled slightly, turning away to walk towards the cupboards that had the decent size plates she had a special fancy for. I think it was the cute gold flowers decorating the ends.
“Drool.” She answered in amusement.
I skim my fingers down the corners of my mouth, searching for the ‘drool‘ but collected nothing. I furrow my brows.
“You must’ve truly had the best sleep of your life last night. I don’t know the last time I have seen drool trailing down the corners of your mouth.” She giggled, opening the cupboard and taking out the plates.
I passed my fingers down the corners of my mouth just in case I did have drool.
“You must’ve been really young then. Too young to care about drool trailing down the corners of your mouth. Find me weird but I loved those days when I had to clean it off your face myself. I miss those days when you were too young to do anything yourself.” Her voice suddenly goes lower, swirling with sadness.
Her eyes that were lowered, lifted as she places the plate on the countertop and now it was the only thing separating the two of us. With a sad gleam in her eyes, her lips lift at the corners. ” Now you’re all grown up and you don’t need mommy anymore.”
I flinched when I noticed the fresh gleam of tears in her eyes. “Mom.” I croaked, suddenly getting emotional. ” Is everything okay, you’re acting strange?” I whispered.
I
She shook her head, laughing in a watery way that had my gut twisting. “Nothing is wrong. It’s just that, realized you’re no longer little anymore. You’re a teenager, a big girl. And soon, you’ll do what teenagers also do.

My throat feels tight as I stammered out.” Wh–at?”
Suddenly mom nods and puts up her index finger. “Wait I’ll be right back. Your dad forgot it in the laundry room last time and I had been meaning to toss it at his head but forgot about it.” She spoke by herself as she walks out of the kitchen and leaves a very confused me there alone.
A few minutes later she reappears, still mumbling to herself but makes a beeline for the fridge. “All the bananas are too soft now. Remind me to make banana bread with it would you Mia?” She asked as she opens the fridge door and searches for something.
“I uh- okay?” I said more like a question. As a more confused question. Mom was truly acting strange.
Maybe it was too early and her brain hasn’t fully woken up yet?
“But a cucumber shall do. I mean it’s more like a cucumber than a banana anyway.” She hums and pulls out a cucumber, shuts the fridge, and walks over to the counter where she stood opposite side of me and places the cucumber down on the flat surface of the counter. 3

“Mom what are you-
My words get stuck in my throat when she reveals what she had in the grasp of her other hand. It was a condom.
The gold packet gleamed.
“You’re familiar with this one yes?” She asked more in curiosity than anything else as she starts to tear the packet.
“I uhm-
I couldn’t seem to answer her as she takes out the slippery rubber.
“It’s time for the birds and the bees talk,” I saw the slight cringe on her face and cringed myself. “You’re of age now and I should’ve probably shown you this sooner.” She admitted as she picks up the cucumber.
I felt the heat crawl up my neck and dance on my cheeks furiously.
This is embarrassing. So embarrassing.
“Mo–my–ou d–on’t-” I stuttered out, feeling like I could pass out at any second from sheer embarrassment. 2
She shook her head. “Now listen closely to every word.”
I stay silent not even nodding because somehow embarrassment had rendered me speechless and frozen. She clears her throat and holds the cucumber upright. “The cucumber is a guy’s um penis okay?” She cringes and so do I.
Please stop. Please stop. I cried in my head inwardly.
She continues. “A guy’s penis when aroused- Wait I should tell you how they get aroused first! Okay, scratch out the first words for now. A guy gets aroused when he’s attracted to a woman. When he wants to make love to her-
She clears her throat. “Okay scratch everything. Let me start over.

After a second had passed she indeed started over. “When two people love each other, they will want to show each other how they feel by engaging in an act called making love. But teenagers nowadays call it fucking.” 5
At hearing my mom say the word fucking, I wanted the floor to open up beneath me and swallow me whole. I would take anything to get away from here. Anything.
“So the penis gets hard and the woman’s private gets wet.” Mom looks ready to slam her head into a wall as she winces. “But to protect themselves from any sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies-
My heart leaps and my stomach turns as she mentions the word pregnancy. I swallowed, suddenly feeling nauseated. Swallowing, I try to not focus on the bile dancing in my throat.
“The boy is usually the one to put on the condom that will protect the both of them from all those things.” She murmurs bringing the condom to the top of the cucumber.
Oh God please no.

I wanted to run away from here but something told me mom would run after me to make sure she finishes her‘ birds and bees talk‘.
“So the boy would slip on the condom,” She starts sliding the condom down the cucumber, clenching her brows when she notices the condom was a bit too big for the cucumber.
“Well he’ll want to make sure the condom is the right size or he’ll end up with something like this.” She snorts lightly. “Your dad’s a bit huge- 6
“God mom,” I yelled blocking my eyes with my hands as I felt the curling of a scream in my throat. 1
“Oops? It’s his condom, I just thought I’d explain why it didn’t fit the cucumber snuggly as it should?” She asked with a hint of amusement and embarrassment. 1
“Anyway, uncover your face you need to pay attention, Mia. This is important!” She exaggerated, slamming her hand on the counter.
Sighing while cringing, I peeled my hands off my face.
Looking satisfied that she had my full attention again, she slides the rest of the condom over the cucumber. “He needs to make sure he leaves a little space at the tip so when he reaches um, completion the condom doesn’t break.” She pinches the tip of the condom, pulling it a little to leave ‘space‘ at the tip.
God just take me now, anything would be better than this.
Suddenly there’s the sound of a door closing upstairs and another seconds later.
Mom looks excited. “The boys must be awake. Think they’ll want eggs with their sausage?” She asked as she still pinches the tip of the condom.
I wanted to be swallowed by the floor. Please someone save me from this embarrassment. 4
