Chapter 52: Chapter 52
Davis POV
The house was washed in a blanket of darkness as I slipped into the side door which opened directly into the breakfast room. The corridor was dim and the chandelier shone with less glow than it usually would if the house was still full of activity. The soft amber light toweled the window frame, spilling a sort of warmth to the house.
The clock even ticked louder in the dark. Still, I kept berating myself for giving into the urge of seeing her again after that evening, last week.
Just her smell that filled the mansion was enough to soothe my restless soul. Although I tried to drown all of my frustrations and anger into the past week of rigorous work schedules and meetings, Elara still had a way of sneaking deep into my thoughts.
As I made my way stealthily up the stairs, I wondered what it would feel like if I allowed myself to slip into her room to even catch a glimpse of her. Shaking off the thought, I turned towards the west wing of the hall to the library. I knew that to catch some sleep, I would need to submerge myself in something other than alcohol.
Tomorrow was a day where I needed all my wit put together. So, turning the twist to the door, I went into the dark room. I didn't bother to turn on any light and went straight to.one if the shelves to pick up any book.
It was quite windy. The curtains flapped slightly as I passed by it.
I wondered if the windows were left open and made my way down to see. But they were firmly in place. However, something else caught my attention, my shoulders tensed.
Crossing over to the transparent glass, slightly open, where I presumed the rustling of wind came from, I pushed it open quietly, and stepped into the balcony, expecting to see an intruder or a thief.
But there she was, elegant and beautiful, leaning on the rail with a mug in her hands as the wind toyed with her long ass hair that drove me mad. She stood barefooted, her head tilted as though listening to the rhythm the wind threw.
Suddenly, she paused, then turned around. Her eyes boggled wide while my mind coasted with unnamed emotions.
“Hey.” She murmured.
“You aren't sleeping?” I forced myself to ask.
“Couldn’t sleep.” She answered, eyeing me warily.
“Why?” I huffed.
“I'm not sure… Maybe because the house seems a little lonely.” She answered, casting her eyes off mine hastily.
“You have your husband.” I snapped.
Her eyes flicked to meet mine. “But my Father in-law seems to be missing.”
Releasing a chortling sound, I muttered. “I'm sure I'm nothing compared to your husband.”
She colored instantly, averting her eyes from mine.
“That night… It wasn't really Matt you were doing, right?” I dared to ask, hope creeping up on me like some wanton child.
“I don't understand what you mean.” She muffled into the mug she held as she pretended to take a sip from it.
The balcony suddenly felt smaller as I drew closer to her, my chest almost touching her back. She glanced sideways to see that I was steps away. Our eyes met and held, and I could hear her intake of breath.
Then her expression suddenly hardened.
“Why did you return tonight?” She inquired.
“It's my house.” I fired.
“Which you deserted for the past week.” She retorted.
“What? Were you expecting me?” I drawled, my brows quirked upwards in question.
Finally, she swung around to face me. “I need you to explain what you've been up to.”
Glancing away from her furiously, my jaw snapped in controlled anger. “Like you do to me?” I fired sarcastically.
“I'm not the one who's been taking drastic decisions without first speaking about it to me.” She gnarled.
“Yeah. Right. Says who turned against me when her husband kept crawling back.” I snipped.
“It was a ploy!” She whispered frantically, her eyes blazing with anger.
“Then, fucking him and allowing me see how you writhed against him in pleasure was also a ploy?” I barked harshly.
She started to turn away, but I grabbed her chin firmly in place with my thumb and index finger.
“Tell me who you were thinking about that night.” I spat.
“Get your hands off me.” She answered icily.
“Was it me?” I persisted, staring undauntedly into her brown eyes.
“And if it were?” She fired.
My eyes blazed angrily. What game was she playing?
“Was it?” I whispered.
“Never.” She spat, jerking her face away from my grip.
“Then the video…?” I strung out.
“It's all Matt.” I lied.
Mad, I wipe my hand over my tension filled face.
“You agreed to allow your husband to film your love making episode?” I hushed in bewilderment.
“It seemed fun. Besides, I wanted to teach him a lesson. After that night, he'll never be able to find one like me. I made sure of that.” She boasted, her face curling upwards in a smile.
I wanted to break something. Her neck most likely.
“I see.” I muttered.
“Do you now?” She returned.
Seeing no use being with her there, I turned away.
“Did you like it?”
Stopping abruptly, my patience already running out, I barked. “Like what?”
“Kissing Nessa.”
For a moment, I didn't understand what she meant, then when I did, I struggled to remember who Nessa was. When I finally did, my lips rose in a smirk.
“What do you think?” I fired, turning to face her, my face twisted upwards wryly.
“Bastard.” She murmured, turning to leave.
