Chapter 142: CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY TWO: HEY DOC

~Grey’s POV~

There was no improvement yet. The doctor confirmed my mother-in-law’s vitals were under control but she needed to stay in the hospital for a few more days.

I watched my wife from the door. She had not moved from that position since she came in from work a while ago. She lifted her head only when she wanted to find a comfortable spot. Her hands remained on her mother’s feet and she rested her head on the bed. My mother-in-law’s injury had faded but the questions remained unanswered. Neil was working on it. They had gone through the CCTV camera of my apartment but it wasn’t helpful.

Minutes passed and I flexed my fingers. The meeting Bethel handled for me had been a success but I had to look through their conclusion in preparation for the next meeting. I knew better than to interrupt Mira but night had already fallen. We needed to leave.

“Mira,” I called out to her but got no response.

Crossing over to my wife, I sat on the bench and pulled her into my lap. Her eyes were open but she seemed to be looking through me. I put my lips on hers, tongue searching for an entry she never gave me. She yelped when I nipped on her lower lip and I offered her a sheepish smile.

“It’s late, baby. We have to leave. We will be back tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

“Are you hungry?” I asked.

My hands were inside her shirt, running up and down her warm skin. She shook her head and I frowned.

“Mira, I don’t want you starving. Did you even have lunch?”

Having already spoken to Mercy on my wife’s behalf, she was allowed to work only a half day until my mother-in-law recovered.

Her shoulders sagged. My lips pursed in disapproval, she was skipping meals again.

“No. I’m not hungry.”

My frown deepened and I pushed the stray of hair out of her face.

“Okay, Grey. Sorry. I’ll eat something. Don’t be mad at me, okay?”

Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t be mad at my heavenly flower. “Okay. I won’t be mad.”

I pulled her lower lip and released it with a pop. She giggled but the smile didn’t reach her eyes. On my instructions, we had changed her mother’s room to something bigger so this room gave us space.

“Are you ready to go?”

A look outside the window revealed the dark skies. The television was playing on mute and I could bet Mira had not touched it since she came in. I pulled her up with me, locking her legs around my waist so she wouldn’t have to walk. Maybe I was pampering and spoiling her but she deserved the attention. After all, she was my baby and I would treat her like one.

I gave my mother-in-law’s hand a small squeeze and we bounded out of the room. Something wet touched my neck, I tried to find out the source but Mira wasn’t budging. She hid her face in the crook of my shoulder and cried quietly. In silence, I continued the journey until we were at the backseat of my car.

“Baby. My love, look at me.” She pulled back only for a nanosecond but I saw her puffy eyes alright. “My baby. Don’t do that. She will be fine. In a few days, she will be talking and laughing. You will get to hug her and do everything. You will have your mother back.”

Mira pouted. “You can’t be so sure.” Maybe. But I would rather keep my thoughts positive, for her sake. “And where’s my dad? Shouldn’t he be looking for her?”

For a moment, I thought of sharing Neil’s theory but it would only discomfort her. According to Neil, there were three possibilities that could have led to this.

One, her father had hit her mother and she ran away. Two, they had both been attacked and her mother managed to escape. That would mean the father was dead. I couldn’t entertain this possibility, mostly because Mira would never forgive herself if he died. Three, her father hit her mother and ran away.

None of these options appealed to me. I laced our fingers together. “He should, like any man who loves his wife would. But maybe he doesn’t know where she is. Maybe he’s out there looking for her. We don’t know but I promise you, Mira, I’m working on it.”

Mira smiled. “Thanks.”

“For what?”

“For taking care of me even when I’m annoying.”

I laughed and she smacked my chest. I feigned hurt, letting out an exaggerated howl that made Mira massage the spot she hit.

“Thank you for being here for me, Grey. I mean it.”

“And I meant it when I said we are a team. I’ll be here for you. I’m happy if you’re happy. So this is nothing.”

Her stomach growled. She rubbed her belly and said, “I think I’m hungry now. Please, feed your wife.”

“Your wish is my command, baby.”

Her responding laughter wasn’t as joyful as it usually was on a regular day but I was glad she still knew how to laugh. Her previous smiles had all been fake. She might have fooled the doctors and nurses but she couldn’t fool me. Helping her to the front seat, I tucked her safety belt into place and started the car.

The car vibrated under us. I stretched out my right hand, using the other to grip the steering. Mira planted a kiss on the heel of my palm and my skin tingled. I loved this woman, more than anything.

We stopped on the way for some Chinese. I carried her up into our apartment, ignoring the looks we got from the people downstairs. Mira was my first priority, other people’s opinions didn’t matter. On getting inside, I helped her out of her clothes so we could bathe. Desire coiled inside me as I sponged my wife and the memory from our last sex in the bathroom made my cock jerk. Mira didn’t need my penis acting up now. If she did, she would have initiated sex.

I was proud of how far she had come. From the shy virgin to the sexy vixen who could demand sex at any point. On some occasions, she was shy but she had largely improved. I laughed when Mira stretched out her hand for the sponge so she could wash me. But I obliged her. She took her time in washing me and I fisted my hands to keep the urge to grab her ass and fuck her hard in check.

“All done,” she said after what felt like hours.

Igave her a stiff nod. And she ran the water over my head. Mira refused to allow me to carry her into the room but she held my hand tight like she was afraid to let go. We stopped in front of the wardrobe. I was about to take out my sleeping shorts when she wrapped her arms around me from behind. My hands tightened over hers. He said nothing but comforted her silently.

“Thanks, Grey.”

Disengaging from her hug to kiss her, I murmured against her lips, “You’re welcome, baby. Anytime. Anything for you. Please stop thanking me for playing my role to you. I’m your husband and I want to always be here for you.”

“Okay, baby.” She kissed me deeply and it stole my breath away. “I love you very much, Grey.”

When we were dressed, I got our food out to the room and fed her. She laughed a few times at some of my jokes. As soon as I noticed her eyes start to droop, I switched off the lights and pulled her under the cover.

The next day, Mira was awake before me. The room was empty but her side of the bed was warm to my touch. I had barely gotten off the bed when the door opened to reveal my beautiful wife. She was still in her nightgown but she looked better than she did yesterday.

Mira set down the tray in the centre of the bed and leaned forward to capture my lips in a good morning kiss.

“Good morning, baby. How was your night?”

“Perfect,” I replied.

Mira giggled. “I brought food.”

I kissed her again, then excused myself to use the bathroom. Halfway across the room, my phone rang. I retraced my steps to pick the phone and my hands shook a little when I spotted the doctor’s number. My first instinct was to tell Mira but I forced one step in front of the other until I was safe in the bathroom.

“Hey, doc,” I said into the phone.

The doctor greeted. “I have been trying to reach your wife but her number is unavailable.”

I nodded like the man could see him. I paced to the end of the bathroom and walked back to the mirror. My knuckles turned white from gripping the phone too hard and I beckoned on the doctor to continue.

“Anyway, her mother is awake. Mrs Evans woke up this morning but she’s currently asleep. We need to watch her but you can come visit later in the evening.”
