Chapter 13: CHAPTER THIRTEEN- TEARS.
~MIRA’S POV~
I spun around, my voice rising before I could stop it.
“Who knows, Michael! You can’t actually follow me. My boss is really strict, and it’s not permitted. You’re not even officially an employee of this company yet, so you cannot go see him right now. I’ll probably just meet you tomorrow at our assigned time, if you don’t mind.”
Michael blinked, half-smiling. “Oh, Mira, oh Mira. Why don’t you want me to see your boss? Is anything going on? Can’t I just follow you and let your boss know who I am to you?”
I gaped at him. “Are you sick? Honestly, is something wrong with you? Don’t you know how to behave, separating personal matters from professional matters? Come on, this isn’t a joke. I’ll just see you later.”
Without waiting for his reply, I dashed off, heels clicking against the polished floor. My breath caught as I pressed the elevator button, heart racing.
Inside, doors closing, I let out a shaky laugh. That was close. Too close. If Michael had marched in, everything, my secret, my marriage, my boss, my husband would have exploded.
No matter what, I can't let him find out anymore because he is working for the company now.
I smiled faintly at my reflection in the elevator wall. Finally, I cut Michael off before a full-blown disaster.
The door opened but there was no one out front. I was about to dial Grey's number when I saw a lady stopping in front of me. The lady stopped in front of her with no smile.
“Hi,” I murmured after a few seconds of awkwardness. I didn’t know if to ask this lady about my husband. What would I state as the reason? Finally, I said, “Can I help you?”
The lady chuckled. “Yes, you can. I am Bethel”
I offered her a tight smile. With my short heels, I towered over the woman by a few inches.
“Follow me.” She said.
I hurried to catch up with her.
The woman talked and walked as fast as she spoke. “The boss wants to see you right away.”
My heart slowed, my palms became clammy and I wiped them on my jacket.
Oblivious of my discomfort, Bethel glanced at her wristwatch. “It took you ten minutes to get here.”
Was it that long?
We continued to the garage and I paused. Grey's car was there and Bethel was heading towards it. There was no way she would enter that car.
What if someone saw her?
“What are you waiting for?” Bethel asked.
She held the door of the backseat open for me but I couldn’t move. Anyone could see us.
“Mira?”
“I’m sorry I can’t go in there.”
Bethel shut the door quietly and folded her arms on her chest. “The boss wants to see you.”
My heart was beating faster now.
“Are you saying no to him?”
I shook my head and Bethel opened the car again. “Then get inside, please. The boss hates tardiness.”
I shuffled into the car and Bethel took the front seat. My hand flew over her mouth when I saw Grey seated on the other side.
He was staring out the window. I clenched my hands on my knees, lost and confused on my next step of action. A yelp escaped my mouth when the car moved. I shrank myself, not daring to look away from the mesh dividing the front and back seats. This was not good.
“You missed lunch,” Grey said.
He wasn’t looking at me but his words were directed at me.
“That’s bad.”
His tone was formal as always, I decided it was Boss Grey present and I murmured, “Sorry, Sir.”
Finally, he glanced at me. My breath caught in my throat and my lips dried up. I was staring into his stormy grey eyes that peeled the layers around my heart. He looked at me like he saw me for who I really was. Strangely, I liked it.
When he bridged the gap between us,I was still too entranced to act. Grey’s thumb brushed a corner of my lips and a jolt of electricity charged through me. On instinct, I leaned into his touch and he cupped her face.
“You shouldn’t starve,” he whispered. His eyes lowered to my lips.
I forgot what he said as soon as he said it. Was he going to kiss me? I would be a liar if I said I didn’t want a real kiss from him. My lips parted.
“I made a reservation for us.”
Grey pulled back without fulfilling my fantasies, I swallowed a groan when he turned back to the window. I was annoyed at him for riling me up and even more annoyed at myself for reacting to his touch and presence this way. I glanced at Bethel and the driver.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Sir.”
Grey followed my line of sight. “Bethel is my newly recruited assistant. She knows about us. Francis too, he drives me everywhere.”
I tucked my hands between my legs. They might know but the rest of the office didn’t know.
“And I wasn’t asking you, I was telling you. We have a reservation.”
The boss character was back, his constant shift in character annoys me.
“Yes, Sir,” I murmured.
Hurt by his command, I looked out of the window. One minute, he was this hot man I wanted to juno on and the next minute, he was so stoic. He didn’t have to order me around like I was a kid. I am his damn wife.
“Mira,” he called out to me.
I refused to look up. My period was almost here so my hormones were acting up again.
“Mira.”
My teary eyes raised to his face and I sniffed. Everything was too much for me. I wanted him to be nicer to me, no matter where we are. At the same time, I wanted him to treat me like the rest of the staff. My feelings confused me.
Grey’s gaze softened. “What’s the problem?”
“Nothing.” His eyes hardened and I corrected myself. “I don’t know.”
He took my hands and rubbed circles on the inside of my wrist. His touch calmed me, the traitorous tears dried up instantly.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea for people to see us together.”
I caught the frown on his face and it bothered me. I wasn’t ashamed of him but office gossip could ruin my career. I had relocated to this city to start a new life and it had been going great until Grey. “It might give them other thoughts.”
“We are going somewhere private,” he said, trying to reassure me.
It didn’t but I nodded. There was no winning with him anyways.
Grey drew me close to him and pecked my forehead. “No one will see us.”
His arms wrapped around me, we stayed that way until the car stopped moving.
Bethel opened the door for us and I followed behind her as she led the way to the restaurant.
