Chapter 11: CHAPTER ELEVEN- MY SLEEPING PRINCESS!
~MIRA’S POV~
The office was calmer than yesterday, only now, Aurora was at my table. She looked up at the sound of the door opening, pulling something behind her and hurried towards me.
I wasn’t ready for any drama this morning but I faked a smile and tried to walk past her, but Aurora wasn’t having it.
“Mira has a boyfriend,” she started in a singsong voice and soon, different pairs of eyes turned to us.
“Mira has a lover.” she repeatedly sang.
Heat crawled up my neck, I snatched the card Aurora was waving at me. Both the handwriting and words seem unfamiliar to me.
My heart pounded at those words. Oh could it be him?
“Where did you get this?” I asked Aurora.
“Mira,” Laura called. She was at my table with a bouquet in her hands. “See this. The note must have come with the flowers.”
I massaged the back of my neck. It had to be Kelvin. He was the only one who came to my mind at this moment. Oh silly me.
There was nothing too much about the flower but the gesture warmed my heart. He made me feel like I meant more to him. But we came to work together, so thoughtful.
Laura stretched a hand for the note, but I didn’t want her to have it but avoiding it would raise suspicion.
She grudgingly handed it over.
“My Sleeping princess!” Laura’s face scrunched in disgust and I died a little on the inside. The note wasn’t so bad.
“What the fuck does that mean?”She shrugged.
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know who sent this?”
The tone in which Laura used was highly suggestive but I refused to bite into Laura’s bait. I would not give her a reason to gossip.
“I have my theories but I’m not sure.”
But I was more than sure it was Grey.
“Nobody worth mentioning.” Laura waited and waited.
But I said nothing. She threw her hands up in frustration. “That’s it? Girl, you have to give me more than this.”
That would never happen.
“Who is he? Tell me.”
“No. Go to your desk.”
I arranged my laptop and other things on my table, and as soon as Laura turned her back to me, I raised the flower to my nose and sniffed it. I didn’t care so much for flowers but the pure intention behind this and the sender made her smile. I loved it.
I got to work on the new project. I had suggested starting a new segment for youths alone and the approval came last night. I wasn’t sure it was approved
because Mercy loved the idea. But a tiny voice in my head told me it had to do with Grey.
The thought didn’t deter me. I would see the project to the end. As a teen, I would have loved to see some of the trends that would be discussed in Stars Glow, the name of the segment I hoped the company would take on. It would focus on teens and young adults. I picked my phone and paused. The crack was still there.
Laura was back at her desk so she chatted her up via WattsApp. Laura didn’t reply, instead she came over to my table and I fought the urge to roll my eyes.
“Why do you need a phone repairer?” Laura asked.
The curious woman stared behind her at the flowers on the window. A stream of sunlight filtered in, turning the top of the flowers a golden yellow colour. I cleared my throat to call my friend’s attention. I didn’t want the conversation revolving around it.
“My screen is cracked,” I replied. And I didn’t care because it was working as perfectly as it did before it cracked. But Grey cared so I had to fix it. “I need to change it.” I added.
Laura tapped her index finger to her chin.
“Ask Grey.”
“Wh… what?” I sputtered.
I was shocked for two reasons. One, my friend called my husband by his first name like they were friends. Two, how in God’s name did she know Grey could fix phones? I pulled my lips into a thin line of disapproval, struggling not to show. They both had some serious explaining to do, especially Grey.
“Grey,” Laura muttered.
When I continued gawking at her, she sighed and pushed her phone to her.
“The computer guy.”
There was a picture on Laura’s screen. A man with dark hair. He looked like Grey, quite alright but not my husband.
“I think he knows someone who knows someone and all that. Helped me last year.”
I could only nod. “Thanks.”
Laura waved off her gratitude, and stood still, taking a glance around the office to be sure no one was listening to us, her voice lowered and she asked, “What do you think of the new boss?” she lowered her body “Are you interested in him?”
For a second, I froze. I didn’t know how to answer that. Of course, I was interested in my husband. The few moments with him guaranteed we could have an almost normal life. Plus, he cared. He paid attention. He even bought me flowers.
“He’s not my type,” I blurted out.
Laura broke out laughing, she fell back to the seat and held her chest as the laughter tumbled out of her lips. It annoyed me. Some heads turned to us and I bent the screen of my laptop. Aurora was no longer paying attention to the files on her desk. I looked up to my friend grinning sheepishly, time to end this nonsense.
“Forget I asked,” she mumbled.
“Come on. I’m also interested in him.” I grunted. My husband was off limits.
“Really, I wanted to know who my competition is,” she said with a wiggle of her brows as her face grew darker.
I didn’t find it funny. He was my husband and we were shamelessly talking about him.
“Good luck.” I blurted out.
“i Don’t need it, Mira.” Laura said.
I looked up and Laura shrugged. The confidence of the other woman irritated me but I tried to remember that no one knew about us.
Once the laughter died down, I resumed work on the Stars Glow project. The presentation with Grey was slated for 3 pm. I wanted him to support me mainly because he loved the idea. I drowned myself with work, adding and deleting things that wouldn’t help my pitch. I never stopped to take a break until my phone’s ringtone snapped me out of my daze. The caller was no other person than my husband. I stole a glance at the office. Some desks were empty, others had takeaway plates on their tables. On cue, my stomach growled and I wrapped an arm around it before picking the call.
Grey wasted no time with greetings.“Come outside.”
I gulped. I had not done anything wrong.
Had I ? Was he mad at me for not sending him a thank you note for the flowers? But I didn’t ask for it. I arranged my files and shut down my laptop. My steps were slow as I meandered to the elevator. Lunch just ended and I didn’t get a chance to eat. My stomach reminded me of my negligence and I winced. The door opened but there was no one out front.
Just when I was about to dial Grey’s number, I saw a familiar figure in front of me making me stop in my tracks.
“How did you get in here?"
"Surprise! My sleeping Princess.’
