Chapter 128: Chapter One Hundred Twenty-Seven
The meeting ended with a soft chime as the projection dissolved. The tension in the room eased all at once, like a collective exhale. Avery stood, stretching her shoulders as Emerald fluttered off to join the other fairies. Her parents were already approaching her. Elena reached her first, pulling her into a warm hug, “You were incredible, sweetheart.”
Remy ruffled her hair gently, “You handled yourself like a seasoned diplomat.” Auron placed a steady hand on her shoulder, “We’re proud of you.” Mark smiled warmly, “And we want a family dinner. Soon.” Avery’s mindlink hummed softly. Lucien, “We should go.” Riven, “We’ll make time.” Molly, “Tell them yes. We’ll figure out the schedule.” Kael, “And I want dessert. Make sure there’s dessert.” Avery bit back a smile, and turned back to her parents, “Okay. Let’s plan for after the summit. When everything settles. And Kael want dessert” Her parents exchanged relieved looks, Elena smiles, “Then it’s a date.” They hugged her again before heading out, leaving Avery standing in the quiet hall, her mates’ presence warm in her mind.
Back at Londrell’s base, the screen went dark. Londrell didn’t move. Neither did Varyn, Connal, or the three fairies hovering nearby. For a long moment, they simply sat in the silence of Londrell’s office, absorbing everything that had just transpired. Varyn finally broke the quiet, “We have two days.” Connal nodded grimly, “And one day of travel. We need to switch vehicles, reroute the convoy, and keep the extremists from noticing anything.”
Steele fluttered forward, wings glowing, “We can mask the magical signatures. They won’t sense the wards until it’s too late.” Vee adds, “And we’ll prepare the emotional tripwires. They’ll trigger themselves.” Londrell rubbed his temples, “Send the memos. Quietly. Only to those we trust.” Varyn was already typing. I’ll handle the envoy. You handle Rhalek.” Connal snorts, “Try not breaking him before the summit…” Londrell doesn’t smile, “No promises.”
The fairies exchange a look. Steele mumbles, “He means punching.” Vee looks at Londrell, “He definitely means punching.” But even with the tension, something shifted in the room - a sense of direction, of momentum, of finally moving toward resolution. The date was set. The plan was in motion. The trap was being placed. For the first time in months, Londrell exhales.
Avery has just put her stuff down in the office at the apartment, when Molly and Kael burst through the door carrying two large paper bags. Kael shouts, “Dinner delivery!” Molly sidles up to Avery, “From your favorite place!” Avery’s eyes light up, “You went to the human realm?” Kael preens, puffing his chest, “Of course. We needed victory noodles.” Riven emerged from the hallway, hair still damp from his shower, “And dumplings.” Lucien following, smiles softly, “And jasmine tea.”
They set everything out on the coffee table - steaming cartons, sauces, chopsticks, and the familiar scent of Avery’s favorite dishes filling the room. They all sat cross legged on the floor, plates in hand, talking over each other with excited energy. Molly exclaims, “We actually have a date. A timeline.” Riven adds, “And a plan that works.” Lucien, speaks up, “And allies who we can trust, with a plan B.” Kael bounces, “And food. Don’t forget the food….”
Avery laughs, leaning back against the couch as warmth spread through her chest. “We’re really doing this.” Riven reaches over, brushing her hand with his, “We are.” Lucien nods, “And when it’s done… peace.” Molly grins, “And maybe a vacation.” Kael raises his chopsticks like a sword, “To the end of chaos!” They clink their chopsticks together like glasses. And for the first time in a long time, Avery felt hope settle deep in her bones. The summit was coming. The trap was being set. The extremists were walking straight into it. And soon - very soon - this chapter of their lives would close.
The morning the convoy departs arrives with a strange stillness, the kind that settles before a storm. Londrell stands outside the transport hangar, watching as the new vehicles roll out - sleek, magically reinforced, and completely different from the ones originally assigned. The switch had been done quietly, overnight, with only Varyn, Connal, and the fairies aware.
Vee and Thistle flit around the convoy, weaving subtle glamorous over the vehicles to mask the magical signatures of the containment wards hidden inside. Vee announces,
“They won’t sense a thing.” Steel who had been sitting on Londrell’s shoulder, “Not until it’s too late.” Londrell exhales, tension coiled in his chest, “Good. Let’s keep it that way.”
Varyn approaches, handing him a final list, “All of the loyal members have been briefed. The unstable ones have been briefed and paired with stabilizing partners. And the extremists… remain unaware.” Connal snorted, “They think they are being honored with back-vehicle placement.” Londrell's jaw tightens, Let them think it.” The fairies chime in unison, “The trap is set.”
Mira strides toward the convoy with a smirk tugging at her lips. She felt electric - the kind of thrill that came before chaos. Thinking to herself ‘finally. The summit. The perfect stage.’ She didn’t notice the faint shimmer of fairy magic around the vehicles. She didn’t notice the way Varyn watched her with cold calculation. She didn’t notice the danger coiling around her. She only noticed the opportunity.
Torren hummed under his breath, as he walked behind Mira. He had spent the night preparing spells - destructive, volatile, forbidden. He thought to himself, ‘Purification begins soon’ He climbed into the front of their vehicle, he was assigned the task of helping the others follow them, unaware that the wards woven into the seats were already reading his emotional spike.
Rhalek, the last of the envoy to load into their assigned vehicles, cracks his knuckles, eyes gleaming with hunger, ‘Let the world burn’ He didn’t care about politics. He didn’t care about Londrell. He cared about destruction. And he believed the summit would give him exactly that. He had no idea whose destruction it would give.
The convoy rolled out at dawn, engines humming softly. Fairies flew overhead, invisible to the naked eye. Inside the lead vehicle, Londrell sat with Varyn and Connal. Varyn watched the road ahead. Connal checked the magical readings, “The extremists’ emotional signatures are already spiking.” Londrell’s eyes narrowed, “Good. The wards will calibrate faster.” Ve fluttered onto Londrell’s shoulder, “Queen Titania is watching. And she approves.” Londrell nods, gaze hardening, “Then let’s finish this.”
Back in their apartment, Avery and her mates were packing their bags - weapons, clothes, magical supplies. Kael tosses a hoodie into his bag, “One more day, then we end this.” Nolly tied her hair back, “And then we breathe.” Lucien checked their travel potions, “And then we rest.” Riven placed a hand on Avery’s back, “And then we live.” Avery looked at all of them - her heart full, her resolve steady, “Let’s go save the world.”
