Chapter 124

I thought it could be Nathan's office.

"I will go back here, Karen. You just have to knock a few times, and the door will open."

"You are not going with me?" I asked.

Although I feel comfortable with Nathan, I just thought the hallway was too empty to be left alone.

She shook her head. "My work is done here."

"Can you at least wait until I get in?"

She shook her head again. "I can't. I have to leave now. I will be back to pick you up when you are done."

She did not wait for me to say the next word before she left. I watched her enter the elevator before knocking on the door.

The door opened and I walked in. I had expected to see a cosy-looking office with Nathan seated in his seat while waving and smiling at me, but instead, it was dark; it made me shiver.

Miss Miranda would not lie to me. Would she? She did not deceive me into coming here. Did she?

The thought of her working for Nyra crossed my mind, but I shook it off.

Miss Miranda would not do that. But what if she did? What if all this was Nyra's plan to get back at me? I shrugged. But I did nothing to her. Did I?

Could it be...

I shook my head. Nyra and Miss Miranda would not try to hurt me because of the Demon King coming tomorrow.

But what if that is the reason?

I had promised the Demon King not to get hurt before he came.

What if I do? What if...

I felt the presence of someone in the room and that jerked me out of my thoughts. I took a few quiet steps backward. I could see a figure, although the room was so dark that I couldn't picture the face, even as a werewolf.

The figure wasn't trying to come close to me, so I reached for the door and tried to open it.

It was locked!

My heart began to beat fast.

"Hello?" I called out but my voice came out so low; I was scared. "Is anyone here?"

There was no reply and there wasn't any movement from the figure.

I began to think it wasn't a human figure but something different that looked like a human.

I took a deep breath and decided to walk closer maybe I could get a clearer view.

I had only taken a few steps when the light came on. It was so sudden that it took a while before I could see clearly.

I quickly scanned through the room to see what it looked like. It wasn't an office, nor was it a room. It was a parking lot; a very big one. And what I had thought to be someone was just a mannequin, which was the reason I got no reply.

I looked at it for a while and burst into laughter.

I was scared for nothing.

I took a deep breath. It was a good thing to know that I was not in trouble, but that did not make me feel completely at peace, though. The parking lot was empty and that made me more vulnerable to getting hurt.

What if someone is hiding somewhere, only to launch an attack when I least expect it?

I decided to knock on the door a few times like I did from outside before, maybe that would open the door.

I went to the door, knocked on it a few times, and waited for the door to open, but it did not. I tried a few more times and got the same result. I gave up and decided to just wait for my fate; whatever it is.

"Karen?" I heard my name.

The voice sounded so much like Nathan's, I began to look around. I noticed there was a car a few distances away. There was someone beside it, holding a megaphone.

That must be Nathan. I thought.

"Karen," he called out again, waving at me. "Come over."

I walked over to him quickening my steps. When I got to him, I wanted to hug him; that was what I needed, but he moved away.

My heart shattered. He doesn't want to hug me?

"He is here," he said in a low tone.

At first, I did not get what he meant, but when he pointed into the car and asked me to go say hi, I knew immediately that he was referring to the Demon King.

My heart skipped a beat. If he is here, he must have listened to every one of my thoughts. Maybe right from the moment I walked in.

"How long have you been here?" I whispered to Nathan.

"Since the moment you came in?" He answered.

I staggered backward. I was right. He had listened to every one of my thoughts.

"You really should go and say hi," Nathan said.

I gathered up all my courage and knocked on the window. He wound down the glass without looking at me.

"Hi, Demon King." I waved slightly.

He gave no reply and did not look at me either. I said nothing and just kept staring at him, while trying not to have any strange thoughts.

I began to hum a song in a very low tone to help me stay on track.

It took a while before he finally looked at me.

"Hi," he mumbled. "Get in the car and sit beside me."

I did not ask why, I turned around and opened the door to sit beside him. Nathan also entered the car and drove off.

I was curious to know where we were headed, but I did not dare to ask. We drove in silence and I had to look out through the window to kill off the boredom I was feeling.

"Any trouble at school?" The Demon King asked.

I turned to look at him. He wasn't looking at me; that made me feel relaxed.

"Not yet," I answered.

"Do you need any help?" He asked.

"I do not..." I paused.

Can I ask him to help me get more positions at school so Nyra won't bully me? I thought. I groaned. How can I forget he can read my thoughts?

"I do not mean that," I said quickly.

"You do not mean what?" He asked. "You do not need my help?"

"I need your help but I don't want..."

I sighed. What am I supposed to say?

I wanted his help but I did not want him to think I was trying to take advantage of our relationship.

"I think I can figure it out myself," I mumbled.

"You think you can?" He asked.

I shook my head. Of course I can't.

"I will help you," he said. "Ashley already spoke to me about it. I am going to help you because of that."

I furrowed my brows. Ashley already spoke to him about it? When?

"You want to know when? You can ask her yourself." He said in a calm voice.

I blinked slightly. Wait! He is not angry that Ashley knows who I am to him?
