Chapter 77 LOVE AND SACRIFICE

Chapter 77 LOVE AND SACRIFICE
CHAPTER 077: LOVE AND SACRIFICE

We return to Duskmoor at dawn.

The academy looks different. Darker. Like reality itself is holding its breath.

Students whisper as we pass. Faculty watch with knowing eyes. Everyone understands what's about to happen.

Corvina meets us at the gates. "The seals are failing faster. You have hours, not days."

"How many hours?" I ask.

"Twelve. Maybe less."

Twelve hours.

I look at the boys. They look back.

"Then we better get started," Alaric says.

\---

The ritual chamber is deep beneath Duskmoor.

Ancient stone covered in symbols that glow silver. A circle in the center large enough for five people.

Oracle Mira waits there. "I'll guide the process. But the actual reunification has to come from you. From all of you."

"What do we do?" I ask.

"Stand in the circle. When you're ready, the fragments will know. They'll return home."

"That's it?"

"That's it."

It sounds too simple.

We have hours before we have to do this. Hours to say everything that needs saying.

Corvina tries to rush us but Corvus intervenes.

"Let them have time. This isn't just a ritual. It's a death."

"They're not dying. They're fragments returning—"

"It's still a death. Give them space."

She leaves reluctantly.

\---

I spend the morning with each of them individually.

Alaric first.

We go to the library. His favorite place.

Surrounded by books older than both of us combined, he's finally calm. The vampire composure back in place.

"Will you remember me?" I ask. "After I'm gone?"

"You're not going anywhere."

"After you're gone then."

He pulls me close. "For eternity. Every moment. Every word. Every touch."

"That's a long time."

"Not long enough."

He kisses me. Slow and deliberate. Like he's memorizing the taste of my lips.

When we break apart his eyes are wet again.

"I've loved you for fifty years across lifetimes and deaths and resurrections. I'll love you for fifty more as part of you."

"That doesn't make this easier."

"It's not supposed to. Love isn't supposed to be easy."

Cassian next.

The training room. Where we've sparred and laughed and pushed each other.

He's sitting on the floor when I arrive. Just staring at his hands.

"Thinking about burning?" I ask.

"Thinking about not burning anymore. After today I won't resurrect. This is permanent."

I sit beside him. "Are you scared?"

"Terrified. But also relieved. One hundred twenty seven deaths is enough. I'm ready to rest."

"I'm not ready to lose you."

"You're not losing me firefly. I'll be right here." He touches my chest. "Closer than I've ever been."

"Promise me something."

"Anything."

"Keep hoping. After you're part of me. Don't let your grief drown out your light."

He laughs. "That's my line. I was going to tell you the same thing."

"Then we'll both keep hoping."

"Deal."

He pulls me into a hug that feels like goodbye.

Zev third.

The astronomy tower. His thinking place.

He's watching stars that are still visible despite the morning light.

"The Covenant's up there now," he says when I join him. "Can you feel them?"

I can. Pressing against the barriers. Waiting.

"After today they'll be sealed permanently."

"Because of you."

"Because of us. All of us."

He turns to face me. "I've walked a thousand dreams Thalira. But being awake with you was better than all of them combined."

"Zev—"

"Let me finish. I need to say this." He takes my hands. "In every dream I'll still be there. Every unconscious thought. Every nightmare you need to escape. I'm not leaving. Just changing address."

I laugh despite the tears. "That's a terrible joke."

"Cassian's rubbing off on me." He smiles. "Remember me like this. Happy. At peace. Not scared."

"I'll try."

"Good enough."

Kieran last.

The gardens. Where we've walked a hundred times.

He's waiting by the fountain. Just standing there looking lost.

"You're going to be alone," I say when I reach him.

"I know."

"The only one who survives."

"I know that too."

"Are you angry?"

He thinks about it. "No. Sad. Relieved. Guilty. But not angry."

"Why relieved?"

"Because I get to stay with you. The real me. Not the fragment. Just Kieran." He pulls me close. "That's all I've ever wanted."

"You'll be mortal. Aging. Normal."

"Good. I'm tired of supernatural. Tired of being special. I just want to be yours."

"You are. You always have been."

"Then that's enough."

We stay like that for a long time.

When the bells ring marking midday, we know it's time.

\---

Everyone gathers in the ritual chamber.

Council members, faculty, students who earned the right to witness. Luna stands at the front, tears already streaming.

The boys and I stand in the circle.

Oracle Mira begins chanting. Old words that predate language.

"When you're ready," she says. "Just let go."

I look at them. Really look at them.

Alaric with his vampire grace and eternal devotion. Cassian with his phoenix fire and transforming hope. Zev with his dream-walking wisdom. And Kieran, fully human, who's about to lose the piece that's been with him since birth.

"I love you," I say. "All of you. I need you to know that."

"We know," they say together.

Then Alaric steps forward.

"I'm ready."

And everything changes.
