Chapter 17: Dinner Delight and Desires
Paul meticulously groomed his hair and straightened his clothes before making his way to the kitchen. As he entered, Phil approached him, showing his cell phone.
"Hey, did Petro text you, bro? He's coming over in a few hours," Phil said with excitement. Paul's eyes widened with happiness. Retrieving his cell phone from his pocket, he opened the messaging app to find a message from his brother waiting for him. A non-stop smile graced his face as he commented, "I can't believe he's actually coming. Let me see what he said."
Opening the conversation, Paul read Petro's message: "Hey, what's up, brother? I'll be at your and Phil's place in a few hours. Hope you're well. Miss you guys. See you soon."
Paul chuckled and playfully squeezed Phil's shoulder, feeling a wave of infectious joy. "This is unreal! I can't believe he's coming." Phil nodded, his own smile lighting up his face. He turned to Paul, asking, "So, what do you think of the dishes? Are you ready to help set the table?"
Paul glanced at the beautifully arranged dishes, truly impressed. Curiosity tugged at him, as he eagerly anticipated tasting the creation that had captured his heart. Helping Phil carry the dishes to the table, he finally responded, "They look amazing. Can't wait to try what Ellen's prepared."
Once the dishes were laid out, Phil inquired, "Where's Ellen?" Paul couldn't suppress a smile as he replied, "She's in the bathroom. Let's wait for her."
Meanwhile, in the bathroom, Ellen was wrestling with her emotions. She tidied her hair, staring at her reflection with wide eyes. There was a burning sensation inside her, an internal turmoil she couldn't shake.
"Ugh, why did I do that? What if Phil saw? Damn it! Paul's driving me crazy. I can't believe I lost control like that," she muttered in frustration.
She splashed water on her neck and forehead, hoping to quell the fire within, but it was futile. As she dried herself, she took a deep breath, attempting to regain her composure. She reassured herself, "It's fine, Ellen. Just make an excuse and leave. You need to go. Staying will only lead to more mistakes."
Stepping out of the bathroom, Ellen headed down the hallway toward the kitchen. As she entered, both Paul and Phil turned their attention to her simultaneously. With her heart racing, she tried to act natural.
Paul was first to address her, his eyes serious. "Thanks for coming, Phil's been a great host. But there's been a slight change of plans. My friend needs me urgently; she's not feeling well. I'm really sorry, but I can't stay for dinner."
She put on a faux-sad expression, and Phil stood up, understanding the situation. "No worries at all. We'll take a rain check. Hope your friend gets better soon." Ellen nodded gratefully, and Phil moved closer to her, as if considering a goodbye kiss on the cheek. Their lips made a brief contact, and Ellen's initial surprise subsided. She caught a whiff of his pleasant scent, struggling to maintain her composure.
Phil pulled away, wearing a warm smile. "I'll definitely invite you again. Have a good evening, and thanks for coming." Returning the smile, Ellen responded, "We'll look forward to it. Thanks, I had a great time. Goodnight."
As she turned away, she sensed Paul's gaze on her. Meeting his eyes for a fleeting moment, she quickly shifted her attention and headed toward the exit. The night had taken an unexpected turn, and she yearned for it to end. But before that, dinner remained a priority. Her hopes of tasting Ellen's cooking were dashed; she'd have to settle for ordering something.
As her stomach grumbled in hunger, she scolded herself, "Nice job, Ellen. This mess is all on you." In her apartment, Ellen's hunger propelled her to the kitchen. She walked in, hand on her stomach, determined to satisfy her appetite.
Back in Phil's apartment, the table was set, and the brothers prepared to dine. Phil's expression revealed a tinge of sadness; he wished Ellen could be there with them, but circumstances didn't allow it. Paul served himself, eyes drawn to the sumptuous spread of mashed potatoes, sausages, and roast beef.
The aroma was tantalizing. Paul cut into the meat that Ellen had cooked and savored it. The flavor danced on his palate, perfectly seasoned and tender. Impressed, he commented, "This meat is incredibly delicious."
Phil observed his brother's delight and recognized the shift in his demeanor. He knew Paul well and decided to broach the subject. Before taking a bite, he asked, "So, what do you think of Ellen, bro?"
Paul nearly choked on the question, swallowing hastily and taking a sip of water. He looked at Phil, wiping his mouth, and arched an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" Phil persisted, curious. "I mean, do you like her? Do you find her attractive?"
Paul briefly touched his beard, then confessed with honesty, "Phil, she's charming, attractive. She intrigues me. And yes, you're probably feeling it too."
Phil's irritation was evident as he stood up abruptly. "I'm not just interested, Paul. It's more than that. I want more than a fling. I have strong feelings for her, and I won't give up on her."
Paul closed his eyes momentarily, then moved closer to his brother, offering a slight smile. "It's not my fault if you're drawn to her. But let's allow Ellen to decide what she wants, and with whom."
With a wink, Paul defused the tension. Both brothers were aware of the predicament they faced—the potential rivalry for Ellen's affections.
Just as the tension reached its peak, a knock on the door interrupted their silent standoff. "Knock, knock."
