Chapter 61 CHAPTER 51

Chapter 61 CHAPTER 51
The swimming class today was cancelled, thank the stars because I still couldn't figure out how to do it.

My heart turned into a wild orchestra of horrible music whenever my feet touches the water and I keep watching out for Kovar, hoping he wasn't having any ideas again.

So we were taken to Dragon Theory class earlier so we can have the rest of the evening free to visit the library.

“They could have put the sparring class first,” Akua complained as we changed direction, “this class always inspired sleep from the other world.”

“Maybe the Instructor has a busy morning,” I suggested.

“Doing what? We're their only jobs except they have to go in to fight,” Mira joined in, as pissed off as her friend.

Both of them were two different shades but they were like sisters.

But with me walking between them, I looked like Akua's twin, my skin remained pink, but these scales were radiating Akua's angry red ones.

“How do they know it's time to come to battle?” I asked, wishing Master Florian would just come back.

I didn't miss him, I just have lots of questions only he could answer.

“There's a rooster. We need rest as much as we need Training, something the Fae King doesn't understand.”

“Each Soldier stays there for two weeks and comes back to rest until someone needs to be replaced and it's their turn or it's another three weeks.”

“But…” I shut up immediately, remembering no one, not even me was supposed to know about my fascination with Master Florian who has been at the border for almost a month now.

“I can't wait to get this over with,” Akua grumbled as she stepped into the large classroom, and made a beeline towards Erin who was looking as miserable as ever.

I went after her but before I could take three steps into the class, someone's foot pulled out of their own side.

I watched it happen in slow motion but my reflex was only to sense things, not to move as quickly as possible to stop myself from getting caught in it.

In fact, the little panic contributed to it as I looked at the culprit who had a shit-eating grin on his face as his plan succeeded.

My body careened towards the ground fast, and my head hit the stony floor, and all the apathy Erin's sadness left behind flew out, followed by pain.

“What the fuck was that, Jax?!” Mira snapped, a slap following.

“What are you talking about? I didn't do anything!”

“It's not his fault your friend is a weak, clumsy girl who can't stay out of normal people's way,” I heard Kovar grumble and I painfully turned my head to look at him.

He was staring at Mira, a pointed look carrying a message I could feel in my hurting scalp.

“Yes she's my friend Kovar, and if you don't want to get another one of those redecorations on your face again, you'll stay the fuck away from this matter!”

“Hey! Am I invisible or are you all disrespecting me in my own classroom?!” Miss Tessa snapped, shutting down all conversation.

But I could still see Kovar, and this was far from over.

“I'm sorry Mistress Tessa, this butthead thinks it's cool to cause other students to fall and –”

“I've told you, call me Miss Tessa and Jax, leave my class. Everyone gets seated, we have a test now.”

“What?!” Jax screeched, and I had to quickly move away from him as he began to yell, amidst the noise erupting across the classroom.

“SILENCE!” Miss Tessa roared, ice suddenly bursting from her chest and encasing the entire class.

I've never seen them this shocked before and who could blame them?

The woman came off as calm and sweet, but here she was displaying this level of power in just one go.

“As I said,” she breathed deeply, “get out of my class. The rest of you, test in two minutes, fifteen seconds of that is gone already!” She snapped and went back to her table, gathering her tools.

Jax walked away, shoulders dropping as the reality hit him.

No dragon wants to ride atop a failure so for the rest of the school year, he'll have to work really hard to make up for the marks he just missed.

And even at that, he might not make it.

Well, he's welcome to join me, maybe he'll stop treating me like crap when he experiences an inch of what I have to do to meet up.

Somehow, between all the trainings and futile library visits, I'd just accepted the truth.

I don't know when, or why I didn't even give it a moment’s thought, but it's the truth.

I'm stuck here and soon, I'll fall from a dragon's back to my death or into slavery and servitude because I don't know how to be a dragon kin.

The only reason I'm even making a bit of an effort is that everyone keeps droning on about how I have an insane amount of power in my soul.

Wouldn't want to disappoint my Chi by not trying at all, besides, Momma's face every night kept me on my feet, trying to get better.

Her death sent me here, maybe there's some hidden purpose somewhere in all of the pain and unexplained hostility I was getting from people.

I mean, what did I do to Jax? He was nice to me from a distance and now, after Kovar gets beaten to shit, he handed me over to the guy with blonde hair and bronze skin.

Anyways, Mira helped me to meet the other girls and I rubbed Erin's back, she was already trying to run away from me like she was going to infect me with the bug that's taking away her sister.

“Are you okay?” I asked her, moving closer to her again.

“Um…” she looked confused for a second, “you're not… you're not angry?”

“Why should I be? Did you intentionally drown me in a sea of sad feelings that would have killed you if you'd let it eat you up?”

“I wouldn't have died, and even if I did, it's my burden to bear. I shouldn't have put that on you even though it's a mistake.”

“Well, good thing my body has been trained to work with or without my Chi, so next time, just give me a warning okay?”

“I could never–”

“If you want to be my friend, you must. You've done too much for me even before you knew me. Let me do this, you must let me, okay?”

She breathed harshly, a tear running down her cheeks.

I cleaned them, hugging her tighter.

“Hell no,” Mira snapped from beside me, and then pulled us apart, “there's a test about to happen and you'll need all your mind intact. I'm not losing you on Trial day. Focus.”

“Yes Ma'am,” I smiled, feeling the first ray of genuine emotions and it was good, light, and beautiful.

I've made friends who looked out for me, something I was never able to do on earth.

And I would never be able to burn them to a crisp, a very important bonus.
