Chapter 290: Wendy's Death
"What? What do you mean?"
Wendy stared blankly at Tengu behind her, then raised her voice. "What are you talking about? What boss? I told you to kill her. Didn't you hear me?"
Tengu spread his hands and shrugged. "Lady Wendy, you seem to have missed something here. Does Ms. Cooper look like someone our organization captured and is about to kill?"
The words jolted Wendy back to reality. She spun around to look at Ivy, finally noticing that Ivy's hands and feet weren't bound by any chains. In fact, she was sitting quite comfortably in the corner.
Looking more carefully, Wendy realized that corner held a leather sofa, and beside it sat a glass of red wine. She'd been too worked up earlier to notice. Now the scene came into sharp focus.
But that only confused her more. She turned back to Tengu, her voice shaking. "What's going on? You took the money but you're not doing the job?"
Tengu pursed his lips. "Our organization has a stellar reputation. When we take money, we deliver. But Lady Wendy, you never actually paid us. Not a single cent from start to finish. Why would we work for you? And you wanted us to kill our own boss—how would that even work? If our boss hadn't said to play along for a while, I would've killed you from the get-go."
A chill ran through Wendy's body. She turned stiffly, her gaze darting between Ivy and Tengu. "What do you mean? What do you mean 'your boss'?"
Tengu spread his hands. "Still don't get it? Ivy—the person you want dead—she's our organization's boss. My boss. You wanted to kill our boss, so you came to our organization. That really threw me for a loop, I gotta say. I wanted to kill you right away, but our boss is merciful. She said to play along and see what you'd do, so we led you here."
Ivy crossed her legs and leisurely picked up her wine glass, taking a sip. "Wendy, Wendy. When is that brain of yours ever going to work properly?"
"You want to kill me? Wait another hundred years."
Wendy stumbled backward two steps. "That's impossible. How could you be the head of an assassin organization? You're just a college student!"
Tengu bristled. "What? Got a problem with college students? Our boss is that talented. She's barely eighteen and already a top-tier assassin. Killing you would be like squashing an ant."
Wendy retreated several more steps, trembling. Suddenly, Ivy's gaze felt like she was looking at a corpse.
She backed away faster. "If you touch me, I'll call the police!"
"I'll tell them everything that happened here. The Cooper family will go down with you!"
The words were meant as a threat, but her tone sounded more like begging. Ivy rose coldly and hurled her wine glass to the floor. It shattered with a sharp crack.
The sound made Wendy collapse to the ground, shaking violently. "Ivy, don't come near me. If you kill me, you'll pay for it too."
Ivy shook her head. "Sorry, but trash like you isn't worth dirtying my hands over."
"Actually, Wendy, I've never been interested in you from the start. I couldn't care less about an ant like you. But your mistake—your fatal mistake—was hiring an assassin to kill me, and ending up at Tengu's door. And now, in this place, you've seen my face and learned the truth. So..."
Ivy's eyes suddenly gleamed with killing intent as she stared down at Wendy crouched on the floor. She turned to Tengu. "So I won't leave myself any loose ends."
Ivy smiled faintly, glancing at Tengu. "Handle the rest. Make it clean. No traces."
Tengu immediately responded, "Don't worry, boss. Leave it to me. I'll make sure you're satisfied. Won't even leave half a bone behind."
As those words fell, Wendy broke down completely, sobbing. "Ivy, I was wrong! Please, I'm begging you, spare my life! I shouldn't have treated you that way before. I know it was all my fault."
"I was wrong, Ivy. I'm sorry. Don't kill me, please don't kill me!"
But to Ivy's ears, the words were nothing more than wind. She didn't give them a second thought and walked out.
The moment the iron door slammed shut, a desperate scream echoed from deep within the basement.
Half an hour later, Tengu came to Ivy with a cheerful expression. "Boss, everything's handled. Clean as can be. No one will ever find a trace of her."
Ivy had no interest in dwelling on such trivial matters. She narrowed her eyes and yawned. "Have the organization's people stand by. Moss will be coming to New York soon. We'll have a big fight on our hands."
Even the usually carefree Tengu turned serious at the mention of Moss coming to New York. "Don't worry, boss. I've already ordered all the assassins to stand by. We've stopped taking jobs. Just waiting for your command."
Ivy let out a breath of relief, gazing up at the sky. "Soon. Once I've settled this score, some old ghosts can finally be laid to rest. Then I can actually enjoy my life."
Tengu didn't fully understand what she meant, but he said earnestly, "Boss, go home and rest. If you need anything, just say the word."
Ivy sighed and left the secret base. Her figure looked weary, but she knew that before long, she'd be stepping into a new life.
Time moved on. During this period, Ivy continued treating Sean.
What she hadn't expected was that Sean's condition improved faster than she'd anticipated. In less than two months, the cancer cells were completely under control, and only ten percent remained.
Sean clutched the test results, practically bursting with excitement. "Ms. Cooper, you're incredible! It's only been a little over a month, and my cancer cells have shrunk to this level. You're absolutely amazing."
"You're the Shaw family's savior."
"I have to contact my family right away and have them throw a huge party to celebrate my recovery!"
Ivy pressed her lips together and gave Sean a light smack. "It's under control, sure, but there's still ten percent left. Don't let your guard down. You still need to take your medication."
"Yes, ma'am. Whatever Dr. Ivy says."
