ENZO STEELHEART
Alonso
Enzo Steelheart is as bad as they can come. And this isn’t because he has eyes on Rosalia. Rosalia who isn’t in my job description, Rosalia who I followed to work and remained outside the school building she works at. Rosalia who I watched interact with Enzo with a huge smile and a bashful attitude.
Immediately I saw the way he smiled at her and from his body’s gesture in her presence, I knew I had to check on him. When I saw the woman who had been the third person in their midst leave to go back into the building, I almost opened my car door. And this was before I found out any information about Enzo. Enzo is a member of a mafia family like myself. But the difference between us is that Enzo is close to the bottom level, the surface level. Those in charge of ensuring the steady flow of income in the streets, those in charge of taking care of little flies here and there. And while that might seem little, he earns more than decent cash- something his mother must think comes from a huge business deal he must have lied to her about. And another major difference between he and I- something that renders us miles apart - is his lack of control. Never give Enzo Steelheart a gun, a bullet could end up in the head of an innocent person if he feels threatened. And I know that’s not the kind of person a girl like Rosalia who says she’s Barbie and asked me to be her Ken would need.
While in my car, I checked up the meaning of Barbie and Ken and I was opened up to a whole new world. I spent my time in the car watching Barbie videos and stories. I almost laughed at myself when I began to get interested in the storyline.
So Enzo is bad news. Worse news. I am also far from what a good person is but I am not Enzo. Wait, why do I keep trying to actively compare myself with Enzo? No! Not at all. I am not thinking I am a better person for her.
But as she walks back to her car and I catch Enzo’s eyes transfixed on her little behind, I make a decision. One that is terrible, horrible. One that could end up very dastardly. But one I know I would end up doing at the end of the day.
Again and at a not so noticeable distance, I follow her car. She drives to Bianchi Corporations and picks up Viviana. Now I’m back at work. They go into a mini-restaurant, one I wouldn’t choose to go into even if Iwas blind. And after some measured minutes, I go as well and choose a table, one that is facing the space.
Alright perhaps calling this place a restaurant is too big a world but I don’t know what else to refer to it as since they serve food and drinks. The roof is leaking and I know so because there is a bucket inside and around the bucket, you can see the difference in the colour of the cemented area- a sign of how many times it had been beaten on whenever it rains. No one seems to be fazed though.
I exhale. If I was dressed normally, in a clean suit and a shiny pair of shoe, I would have been noticed immediately. But all thanks to what my boss is having me do, I am currently in a black hoodie and plain black trousers- I am as plain as any other here. There is no music playing in the background - there is not even space for a background. The other customers in the space are loud and extremely chatty and so is the woman who seems to own the place. She should be in her mid fifties and glides about with grace as she takes orders from different persons. She seems to know everyone because she doesn’t leave a table until she has asked a personal question or made a snarky comment. The customers don’t seem to be fazed by it though and in fact I think they seem to be used to it, some smile while some merely roll their eyes. There are two other persons who wait on people’s orders but due to how plenty people are, they are also busy.
I see her saunter to Viviana and Rosalia’s table.
“My favoirite girls-” She greets and they smile at her. “How was work today?”
Viviana shakes her head. “The usual with the addition of something extra, something I didn’t need.”
“Bosses can be annoying-” she comments as she places her hands on her waist. “Or maybe I shouldn’t say so seeing as I am also someone’s boss.”
They laugh at her joke.
