Chapter 108
Laura was sitting on the bed, still feeling some pain from her injuries. The nurse carefully administered her medication to relieve her suffering. The room was quiet, but the soft sound of the door opening broke the silence. When Laura looked, she found Morgan standing in the doorway, his unexpected presence catching her by surprise. She didn’t know what to say.
Morgan entered the room with a serious look, yet he was still trying to soften the tension of the moment. He closed the door behind him and took a step toward Laura's bed.
“Sorry to surprise you,” he said, his voice softer now. “But we need to talk.”
Laura, still a bit dazed from the pain, felt the weight of his words. She looked at him for a moment, trying to understand what he meant. Something in the way he spoke indicated that this wasn’t just any conversation.
“About what?” Laura asked, trying to stay calm. She knew something was happening.
The nurse glanced at Morgan with a watchful look before turning to Laura.
“I’ll leave you two alone, but don’t tire her too much,” she said gently, adjusting the blankets around Laura. “She’s been through some tough times. I’ll come back soon to administer more medication.”
With a nod, the nurse left the room, leaving Morgan and Laura alone. The room became quieter, with only the soft sound of their breathing filling the space.
Laura broke the silence, her eyes fixed on Morgan, trying to understand the situation. “How did you find out I had an accident?” she asked, a mix of curiosity and surprise in her voice.
Morgan took a deep breath before answering, his voice tinged with a subtle emotion. “My daughter is in this hospital, in the pediatric ward.”
Laura suddenly remembered. “I had forgotten... And how is she?” she asked, concern evident in her tone.
“She’s stable,” Morgan replied, pausing before adding, “but she’ll still need a transplant.”
The news tightened Laura's heart, and she looked at him sincerely. “I’m so sorry for that, but I know everything will be fine. Kids are strong.” She tried to offer some comfort, even though she knew words would never be enough in moments like this.
Laura was silent for a moment, absorbing Morgan’s words. Her surprise was evident, but she didn’t know how to react. He seemed genuinely remorseful, and that took her by surprise.
“I was very unfair to you,” he continued, the pain in his voice clear. “I thought I had suffered the worst betrayal in the world. I thought you married Nick because you loved him. And I said so many hurtful things to you. I wish I could go back in time so I never hurt you the way I did. I’m such a fool... maybe that’s what made me lose you forever.”
Morgan’s words cut through the heavy silence between them. Laura looked at him, her eyes softening but still filled with pain and confusion. She didn’t know what to feel. Part of her wanted to believe him, but the weight of the past was still there.
“You have no idea how much you hurt me, Morgan,” Laura responded, her voice a little shaky. “But... I also have my responsibilities in this story. We both made mistakes. And I... I don’t know if I can just forget all of this.”
He looked at her, his eyes filled with deep regret. The words began to pour out with immense weight, as if each sentence was an attempt to free his soul. He couldn’t keep everything he felt inside anymore.
“I was afraid that all the love you gave me was for him,” he said, his voice breaking. “How many nights did I think he could be touching you, kissing you... and I cursed you for it?” The words came with indescribable pain and frustration from not having understood before. He paused for a moment, breathing deeply, trying to control the turmoil inside him.
“And today I discovered that you just wanted to protect me from everything that was happening to me,” he finished, almost like a revelation. The weight of guilt and understanding mixed in his voice, but he couldn’t stop speaking, as if the words had finally found a way out.
He looked at her deeply, as if finally surrendering to everything he had kept inside.
“Nick was never in my heart,” she confessed, her gaze sincere. “There’s no one I love but you. Only God knows how I suffered with every word you said to me, everything I left behind.”
And then she spoke about the last day they spent together, a memory that still consumed her. “On the last day we were together, I felt so happy because we were finally at peace. When I left you behind, a part of me stayed.” Her voice faltered, full of longing and regret, as if reliving every moment in her mind. She knew that by letting these words out, she was exposing herself completely, but she couldn’t hide anymore.
“I know everything; I know about our little Miran. How happy I am. The first time I saw him, I just knew there was something between us, something that connected us. My son, our son, the fruit of our love,” he says, placing his hands on her face, his eyes full of emotion.
Laura breaks into tears upon realizing that Morgan already knows about their son, the weight of the revelation taking over her. She feels a whirlwind of emotions, but his words are like a balm to her soul.
“I love you so much,” he says, with a sincerity that makes her feel as if time has stopped.
“I love you so much too,” she responds, her voice choked with emotion.
“I promise you that I will dedicate the last days of my life to making you both happy and recovering the lost time,” he speaks, the words coming out with a mix of hopelessness and renewed hope.
“Where is our son? I want him to be with his father for the first time,” Laura says, her voice trembling with anxiety and hope. Her eyes search for Morgan, looking for an answer that will reassure her.
Morgan feels the weight of the situation. He looks at her, pain evident on his face, knowing that the moment of revelation couldn’t be more difficult. “I need to tell you something,” he says, the words heavy in the air.
“What? I knew something was wrong,” she responds, her eyes widening, beginning to suspect the gravity of the situation.
“Morgan, what’s going on?” she pleads, feeling the fear spreading.
Morgan sighs deeply, trying to find the right words. “Nick was in the accident with you. Do you remember? He left the hospital later, went to your grandmother’s house, and took Miran. They didn’t know about the accident and let him go,” he says, his voice faltering as he tries to convey the truth.
In the same moment, Laura panics, her eyes widening in horror. Without thinking, she tries to rip the IV from her arm, feeling the desperation take over her body. “No! My son! My baby!” she screams, crying uncontrollably.
Morgan, shocked and terrified by her reaction, quickly calls for the nurses. “Nurses, please, she needs help!” he asks, trying to stay calm, but his own voice betrays the anguish he feels.
Laura, now in a state of shock, continues trying to free herself from the IV. “I require him! Find my son! Please, Morgan, help me!” she begs through sobs, her heartbreaking as she feels she is losing control of the situation.
