Chapter 109 What Brings You Here Today?
Hearing the surprise in Simon's voice, Daisy just smiled.
"This is a jewelry set that Vincent gave me when we got engaged. I never wore it, and it has been just sitting there anyway. I might as well sell it to help you get through this."
There was a long silence on the other end of the line.
When Simon spoke again, his voice sounded a bit tight. "Daisy... actually I..."
He paused, then changed his approach. "That was his engagement gift to you. If you just sell it like this, won't he be upset "
"He gave it to me." Daisy's tone was flat, even carrying a hint of amusement. "Just consider it... compensation from him."
"Compensation?"
Her uncle didn't know about her divorce yet, and Daisy had no intention of broadcasting it, so she said, "Simon, don't overthink it. Let's just focus on getting through this project first."
Simon was silent for a few more seconds, then let out a long sigh. "Daisy, this project has has only gotten this far thanks to you. When we get results, I'll give you the largest share of the profits!"
The smile on Daisy's face grew a bit wider. "Great, then I'll wait for your good news."
By the time she hung up up, she had just reached Shawn's door.
As she pushed the door open, Sophie and Nick had already been brought back by Felix and were now sitting on the carpet building with blocks.
Shawn was lying on the sofa with a face mask on, holding her phone and staring into space.
"Why are you back so late?" she asked.
"Company dinner."As she spoke , Daisy changed her shoes and hung her bag on the coat rack by the door.
The two children ran over from both sides and hugged her.
Shawn peeled off her facial mask and tossed it into the nearby trash can, letting out a sigh of relief . "You scared me. I thought you and Vincent were getting back together."
"When can you get your divorce certificate? It's been so long."
"I asked today. They said it would be soon. Let's just wait a bit longer. It's not like I'm in a rush to marry anyone." Daisy said with a laugh, her tone full of teasing.
Shawn shook her head. "I don't think it's that simple. What if Vincent is deliberately dragging this out?"
Daisy sat on the sofa with the two children in her arms. Hearing Shawn say this, she couldn't help feeling a bit worried.
Her mind suddenly flashed back to earlier, when she almost fell and Vincent caught her in time but didn't let go for a while.
She didn't know if it was just her imagination, but that seemed to be the first time Vincent had looked at her with such focused attention.
She shook her head, pushing away the inappropriate thought.
The next morning, Daisy sent Vincent a message saying she would come by at noon to pick up the jewelry.
Vincent took a long time to reply with just one word: "Okay."
When she arrived at the Blacks Mansion, it was almost noon. She habitually used the facial recognition at the entrance, just like she had done every time she came home over the past six years.
But this time, a big X appeared on the screen at the entrance.
Her access had been revoked .
Daisy was a bit stunned, and a strange feeling welled up inside her.
But quickly, she adjusted from this discomfort and called Anna, asking her to help open the door.
"It's Ms. Hart. Are you here to..."
In just a few days, even the way they addressed her had changed.
Daisy didn't dwell on it too much and just said, "I arranged with Vincent to come pick up some things at noon. Could you please open the door?"
"Okay." Anna's voice came through the phone. After she hung up, the gate slowly opened inward.
The garden was still the same as before, with the flower beds full of her favorite roses. Two or three gardeners were trimming the lawn and tending to the plants.
The gardeners were all unfamiliar . The ones she used to know were no longer here. These people just treated her as a visiting guest and nodded slightly at her.
Once inside, Anna asked her to sit on the sofa while she went to inform Vincent.
Daisy had just settled in .
"What are you doing here?" A male voice came from the staircase.
Daisy looked up to see Vincent's good friend Victor descending the stairs .
He had his hands in his pockets, his expression very cold, as if this were his home and Daisy was some vagrant who had entered without his permission.
This guy had never been polite to Daisy. She was used to it.
"Picking up something." She said dismissively and didn't look at him again.
But Victor had no intention of letting her off easily. He frowned and asked, "Picking up something? You actually still have things left here? I thought everything had been cleared out already."
That contemptuous, mocking tone made Daisy's expression change.
Before, she would have felt sad, wronged, and thought it was her own problem. But now, she just thought this person had very poor manners.
"I remember that the person I'm visiting isn't you, Mr. Kane, right? Vincent hasn't said anything, but you're already speaking up for him."
"You—"
"What are you two arguing about?" Before Victor could speak, Vincent walked past him from behind and said, "Sorry to keep you waiting."
He was holding three velvet boxes of different sizes and slowly walked down the stairs.
Walking up to Daisy, he handed her the boxes. "Take a look. Is this it?"
Daisy took them and opened one.
The emerald jade was a lush green, with a full, rounded surface and excellent clarity. The edges were set with diamonds as big as fingertips, dazzling in the light.
The earrings and ring were also matching, radiating brilliance that was almost overwhelming.
"Yes, thank you." Vincent nodded slightly.
Daisy put them in her bag and was about to leave when she suddenly heard Vincent say, "How come you had time to come in person today?"
"Aren't you also at home doing nothing?" She jabbed back subtly.
Then she glanced lightly upstairs but said nothing more, turned around, and left with her bag.
"Vince." Victor came down, his expression still unhappy. "Are you still hung up on her?"
Vincent's brow furrowed, but he said nothing.
Victor wasn't someone who needed to read his mood, so he spoke even more bluntly.
"You and Nessa are about to get married. Don't get tangled up with your ex-wife. She'll be hurt if she finds out."
"I know what I'm doing."
Daisy had just left the house and hadn't gotten in her car yet when her phone suddenly buzzed. She took it out and saw it was a message from Vincent.
[Don't take Victor's words to heart. Come visit Luna when you have time.]
The screen went dark, and on the black screen, her sarcastic cold smile was reflected.
She didn't even have access anymore, so why all the talk about visiting often?
Did she have to call Anna to open the door every time she visited ?
Daisy didn't reply and deleted the message.
That evening, Vanessa came home. As soon as she entered, she tossed her coat on the sofa and said directly, "Daisy came today? You gave her the jewelry from my safe?"
At that moment, Vincent was eating dinner with Luna. Hearing her tone, he felt somewhat uncomfortable.
"That was her property to begin with." His voice was cold.
Vanessa was highly intuitive . Sensing that Vincent was a bit angry, her tone softened. "I'm not blaming you. I just think that if you're taking something from my safe, you should at least tell me."
"Even if I didn't tell you, don't you know about it now anyway?"
