Chapter 80 Roger, why did you bring me here?
Katherine tried every possible means to meet her only daughter, Karen, but unfortunately, the Dawsons were too protective of their own, never giving her the chance to even see her.
She attempted to track them by going to Roger’s office, but he wasn’t there. Knowing that Tonia had an exam, Katherine assumed it would be the same for Karen, but every time she tried, Roger had restricted her.
“If you truly care about her as you claim, you won’t disturb her peace when she has more exams ahead,” Roger scolded.
Katherine felt ashamed. Karen had always been independent, so she never had to do anything to support her except for her tuition and shelter.
Seeing Roger there exposed how much of a shameful mother she had been to her only daughter. “I know, and I’m sorry, but I wanted to know if she would attend Tonia’s funeral,” she asked, but Roger's response was cold and indifferent.
“My wife wants nothing to do with your family and would never attend Tonia’s funeral,” Roger retorted.
Due to her exams, Roger had not informed Karen about Tonia’s death, as painful as it was because he hadn’t had his expected revenge. However, his response left Katherine feeling sorrowful.
She had also wanted Tonia and her mother to pay for the deception but never got the chance. Wanting Karen there was her only way of getting the opportunity to plead for Karen’s forgiveness.
Upon returning home, her husband gave her a brilliant idea. To find out the last day of Karen’s exams and meet her there.
The plan worked, but who knew the entire Dawson family would be there to receive her?
Katherine was at a loss for words when she saw her daughter receiving such warmth from a family that wasn’t related to her by blood.
“Karen, congratulations,” Katherine said, her smile pitiful. Karen stared at her, surprised to see her in all-black attire. “Did dad die?” she asked indifferently, causing Katherine to lower her head.
“No, it’s…”
“What are you even doing here?” Roger’s voice interrupted behind Karen, glaring at Katherine for ruining their surprise.
“Roger, I only came to invite her to the funeral tomorrow," Katherine replied. Roger did not like this.
He wanted his relationship with Karen to be finalized before anything else. "Just stay away from my wife."
"Who died?" Karen asked, surprised to see Roger with a large funeral wreath.
"There's somewhere important we need to be. I'll fill you in on the way," Roger said before wrapping his arm around her and helping her into the car.
"Karen, please try to attend. I have something very important to tell you," Katherine was saying when Roger drove away. Giovanni and his family sat in their car and sped after Roger.
The drive was silent, but Karen couldn't hold it in any longer. "Are you going to tell me or what? I don't have any more exams ahead of me."
She would understand if Roger kept secrets from her because of the exams, but since it was over, she didn't want to be kept in the dark.
Roger sighed, but it was a frustrated one. "Kitten, I had a surprise planned, but her presence ruined my mood," Roger said honestly. Karen could relate. "I understand. Sorry."
Roger smiled, but Karen could feel the pain in his words. "Well, since she already made that appearance, I want you to know that medically, Tonia is dead."
There was something about the way he relayed the information that made Karen feel like there was more at stake than he was telling her. "Do you think otherwise?"
Roger gazed at her briefly before turning his attention back to the road. "Her parents haven't noticed, but with the spy I positioned to monitor her at the hospital, Tonia's death was too sudden. According to him, Tonia's condition was critical but not enough to warrant death."
"So, what could have happened? Do they have a fake body or something?"
The questions made Roger accept that dealing with a smart woman could be both interesting and tiresome. "That is my assumption because I'm still finding it hard to trace the doctor who attended to her.
He seems to have disappeared, and the test on the body presented to Tonia's parents came out with a different DNA. Well, it makes sense because Tonia isn’t biologically related to your parents, but my investigator told me that Tonia’s body was not as battered as what was shown to the family when they came to the hospital.”
The more Roger explained, the more Karen felt a lingering fear. “If that is the case, then someone might be sponsoring her. Who could that be?”
Dismay engulfed Roger. “Not only did I not want to tell you after the exams, but I also did not want to give you half information like I’m doing now.”
It was clear that Roger had not finished his investigations, but Karen was grateful for all the sacrifices he made for her.
“You have done more than enough, Stallion. Don’t ever think less of your hard work and sacrifices,” Karen said as Roger began to press the brake.
Touched by her words, Roger smiled internally, though they had already reached their destination. Seeing the fear in her eyes, he smiled internally as she asked, “Roger, why did you bring me here?”
