Chapter 68 Shameless rivals
“What’s wrong?” Karen asked with unease as Roger gazed at her uncertainly. His expression was one of shock and confusion, but he quickly composed himself. No, it couldn’t be her, could it?
DK-1 had blocked him from accessing that information at the motel and had attempted to unveil his identity. Roger had even tried to recruit him/her to work for RD-Group but received no response.
Perhaps now was the chance, so he sent a coded message. ‘I’ll pay you five million per annum to work for RD Group.’
Karen received the message, but the confusion and shock transferred to her. “Terror D2?” Excitement blossomed on her face as the words slid out of her mouth, piquing Roger's curiosity as he focused his attention on her.
“What do you know about Terror D2?”
The light in Karen’s eyes was something he had never seen before as she began to speak as if she had just met her idol. “Terror D2 is fire, and my mentor was obsessed with meeting him.”
“Your mentor?” Roger's confusion returned, but Karen was typing some codes, trying to unravel the identity of Terror D2. However, Roger quickly declined, turning her excitement to sorrow.
“Why does he or she keep refusing?” She mused, disappointment evident in her tone, but Roger faintly guessed what was happening. “You are DK-1?”
This was a complete shock to him because despite being Tonia’s bodyguard for months and having zero knowledge about Karen, he had no idea that she possessed such a wealthy skill.
A frown creased Karen’s brows as she stared at him. Roger was skilled at so many things, but cyber security couldn’t be one of them, was it? “How did you know?”
Turning the screen of his laptop to face her, Karen’s shock became evident. “It’s you!” She had imagined how excited she would be to find out about Terror D2’s identity, but now that the pieces of the puzzle were coming together, she felt lost in the storm of life. “How is this possible?”
Dexter had so wished to meet the man who had become Karen’s husband, and she didn’t know how to feel about it.
“I know so many things, but I never knew about your interest in cyber security.” Roger paused and pursed his lips. “Point of correction. DK-1 is a dynamite. I never took an interest in knowing anyone like I did you.”
“The feeling is mutual,” Karen confessed. “Cyber security wasn’t my thing. I just learned it to please my late best friend.”
“Care to tell me her name?” Roger asked with interest, Karen smiled.
“He’s a man,” she corrected before adding the name, “Dexter.”
“The nerd?” Roger asked surprised. Hector had told them about Dexter and Roger had met him a few times. Looking at the penname, he faintly guessed how it was coined, but couldn’t feel jealous because Dexter was late.
“Yeah, the nerd. I learned it to make him happy and now, it came in handy,” she retorted but he couldn’t help but notice her reddened eyes, sliding to her side and gathering her in his arms.
“I’m so sorry. I know you miss him but you have me now. I can be your best friend and everything, just as you are to me.”
Karen gazed at him with reddened eyes but a faint smile stretched her lips. “Aren’t we wasting time?”
‘Fuck!’ Roger cursed internally. It felt so good to hold her in his arms like that and yet, they had work to do.
“I guess Dahlia already briefed you and I already have my cyber team on board. You can lead the system side and let me handle the programming for the new game.”
Karen couldn’t run out of surprises with Roger. “You know software engineering too?"
Roger shrugged. "I've always been a fast learner so dad helped me to utilize my time well. Mom taught me how to be human.”
A chuckle escaped Karne. “You are one of the luckiest people I ever met,” she said seriously, right before she launched her defense. Monitoring her for a while and being assured of her expertise, Roger dug into the game application.
The tapping sound of the keyboard was like music to their ears as they worked in sync with Roger stealing glances at Karen here and there.
Her seriousness only increased his desire for her and he couldn’t wait for it to end. Along the line, Dahlia entered with different kinds of lunch for them to choose from, both Roger and Karen were grateful.
Dahlia was a competent secretary who made their work easy. “Your firewalls are amazing and my job is seventy percent done," Roger relayed to Karen, the later smiled but suddenly frowned.
“Oh no, they are sending a virus to slow us down.”
Roger had gone so far that he couldn’t stop to handle that. “Please don’t tell me you can’t handle it.”
“I can,” Karen replied to his relief but soon followed with another information. “You won’t believe this.”
“What?” Roger asked eagerly, Karen took a deep breath. She couldn’t believe how shameless some people were.
