Chapter 124: Part 3
Akon
My chest swelled. Our baby. The words resonated deep within me, a melody I hadn’t known I longed to hear. Adrik’s thumb stroked her knuckles. “We almost lost you. Both of you.” His voice was rough with emotion. “We…we were fools. Blinded by power. By ambition. Yes, we accepted the mate bond, but we had once considered ignoring it because of the diamond. Our greed nearly made us lose the most valuable thing we have ever known. Now we get a fresh start, and we won’t make the same mistakes again.”
“We hurt you,” Ayden confessed, his gaze dropping to her hand. “We wanted to use you. To take the diamond. We should have gone after Kai the moment we started loving you.”
My own voice felt thick, heavy with unspoken regret. “We thought…we thought we had to destroy you to possess it. But the diamond…it’s not what matters. You are.”
Layla’s gaze, soft and luminous, swept over each of us. She saw the raw honesty in our eyes, the vulnerability we rarely showed. She saw the fear of what we had almost lost, the dawning understanding of what truly mattered. “I…I felt it too,” she murmured, her voice stronger now. “When I saw you. When you fought for me. It was more than just relief. It was…a connection. Like a part of me recognized you. Felt you.” Her eyes, filled with unshed tears, met mine. “You’re my Mates. Everything is forgiven. And now…now we have a child.”
The words, so simply spoken, shattered the last remnants of our hardened resolve. The thirst for power, the obsession with the throne, it all receded, replaced by an overwhelming, all-consuming love. Adrik leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers. “We love you, Layla. More than anything.” His voice was a broken whisper, filled with a raw, undeniable emotion.
Ayden reached out, his hand gently covering hers where it rested on her stomach. His eyes, usually so full of mischief, were now brimming with a quiet reverence. “We’ll protect you. Both of you. Always.”
Ashton, his stoic demeanor softened, reached for Layla’s other hand, his touch light, reassuring. “You are our world now. Our future.” My own hand found hers, completing the circle. Her skin was warm against mine, a living, breathing testament to our shared destiny. The black diamond, the throne, the wars—they all faded into insignificance. All that mattered was Layla, her strength, her light, and the precious new life stirring within her. We had come close to destroying our own salvation. But in the depths of that darkness, Layla and the life she carried had shown us the truest power of all. Love. And now, we were bound, not by ancient prophecies or material wealth, but by a bond far stronger, forged in fire and fear, and crowned with the promise of a child. We would never let her go. Not now. Not ever.
