Chapter 8: A Hidden Fact
"What did Dr. Agastya find?" Oliver asked as he sat down in front of Jason. Jason reached into his desk drawer and pulled out an envelope, placing it in front of Oliver.
"He found this," Jason replied.
"What is this?" Oliver questioned, picking up the envelope, surprise evident in his tone. He examined the contents of the sealed transparent envelope, trying to decipher its significance.
Inside the envelope was a torn piece of paper with text printed on it. It appeared to be from a book, but the language was unfamiliar to him. The text was centered on the page, with two paragraphs, each consisting of four lines.
"I don't know what this is," Jason admitted, then elaborated, "Dr. Agastya sent it to me and said he found it in the coat of the dead body."
"If he found it in the coat, why wasn't it included in the forensic report we collected from his office yesterday?" Oliver inquired.
"He told me he found this sealed paper hidden inside the coat. The killer had opened the stitches, placed the envelope between the layers of fabric, and then sewn it back to its original shape," Jason explained further.
"Why did the killer go to such lengths? He could have simply put the envelope in the coat pocket," Oliver remarked.
"Yes, he could have, but perhaps he wanted to test our investigative skills... to see if we could find it," Jason replied seriously.
"The killer sealed the paper in a waterproof envelope and then concealed it within the coat because he knew he was going to dump the body on the beach, where the paper would likely be damaged by water. This suggests the killer was alert and calculated at the time of the murder, possessing a sharp mind," Jason analyzed.
"You're right. It indicates that this was a premeditated murder and that the killer was prepared for every step, both before and after the killing," Oliver concurred.
Jason nodded in agreement with Oliver's guess and then turned his attention back to the page.
"What language is this?" Oliver asked again as he examined the paper.
"I don't know... I've never seen this language before," Jason replied.
"Look at these symbols," Jason said, pointing to a few drawn around the paragraphs on the page.
"Yes, I've seen these symbols," Oliver acknowledged.
"Do you know their meaning?" Jason inquired.
"No, sir," Oliver shook his head.
"The killer first carved symbols around the belly button of the dead body, and then he drew these symbols on this page and hid it under the layers of fabric of the coat," Jason explained.
"These symbols must have some meaning," Oliver remarked, then added, "And we have to find it."
"This morning, Kate Miller came to my office," Jason continued.
"Kate Miller... the investigative journalist from Global News Network?" Oliver asked.
"Yes," Jason confirmed, then took a deep breath before continuing. "She wanted to collaborate with me on solving this case. When I declined, she mentioned that if Dr. Agastya were to call me about finding something from the coat of the dead body, I could call her."
"The question is, how did she know there was something inside the pocket of the coat of the dead body when we weren't aware of this fact?" Jason pondered aloud.
"Maybe she was trying to lure you by saying that. How could she know about this evidence when we weren't aware of it?" Oliver suggested.
"She wasn't just luring me or bluffing... she was genuinely aware of this evidence. Someone must have leaked the information to her," Jason said, his tone serious.
"It's possible. These journalists have sources everywhere, and they know when to use them to get information," Oliver acknowledged.
"I can't let her win this time. I have to solve the case before her and report to the superintendent," Jason said, worry creeping into his voice.
Although he had a crush on Kate, he felt the pressure to win the case to save his job. Lately, Jason was living a dual life: on one side, he wanted to impress Kate and get closer to her, and on the other, he needed to be a professional police officer and keep her from stealing his victory.
"Sir, Kate Miller is highly skilled in her field. For the time being, we could benefit from her expertise to prevent you from being transferred to a distant place, which could tarnish your CV," Oliver said seriously.
As he finished speaking, Jason shot him a harsh stare.
"I will not entertain that idea," Jason stated firmly.
"I will not do this," Jason insisted. His feelings for Kate were a secret he wouldn’t share. So, in front of her and everyone else, he had to act like her rival.
"Instead of praising Kate and suggesting I join forces with her, you should focus on deciphering the language written on this paper and understanding its meaning," Jason continued, his voice rising slightly. Oliver took a photo of the paper and stood up from his chair.
As Oliver left the office, Jason rested his head in his hands, attempting to calm his tense nerves.
Ah, Kate, Kate, Kate. I don’t know what to do with you. I wasn’t thrilled about Oliver admiring you, but deep down, I know I’m the one who really cares. There’s this fire inside me, hidden but burning strong for you, growing more intense with every single day.
Jason was sitting in his office chair, staring blankly at the stacks of paperwork in front of him. The hum of the fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, but his mind drifted elsewhere, lost in a daydream. He closed his eyes, and in that moment, Kate came to life before him. It all felt astonishingly real.
As Kate drew closer, the world around them faded, the bustling noise of the evening slipping away. Her eyes sparkled, and a gentle smile played on her lips, igniting something deep inside him. He felt a mix of longing and apprehension, a storm of emotions swirling as she stepped into his space.
Then, in a moment that felt suspended in time, their lips met. The kiss was soft and tentative at first, a delicate exploration that quickly ignited the fire inside him. Jason felt the tension in his body release, melting away like ice under the warmth of the sun. It was as if every doubt, every worry about Oliver, vanished in that shared breath. He was lost in the taste of her, the warmth radiating from her, and the gentle caress of her fingers against his cheek.
The kiss deepened, becoming a dance of desire and vulnerability. Jason's hands found their way to her waist, pulling her closer, as if he could shield her from the world around them. Every lingering touch sent shivers down his spine, each moment stretching into eternity.
In that instant, Jason was completely absorbed, forgetting everything except for the connection they shared. His heart swelled with a mix of joy and fear—joy at finally feeling her lips against his, and fear of what it all meant. Would this change everything? Would they be able to navigate the complexities of their feelings in a world that seemed to conspire against them?
