Chapter 158: the hunters
In the south region of Spring Island,
At night, a helicopter descended, its rotors kicking up clouds of dust and debris. The noise was deafening.
A row of men stood in line, their heads hung low, shoulders tense.
As the helicopter's blades slowed, Ryle emerged, his figure cutting a stark silhouette against the dimming sky.
The men simultaneously knelt as they murmured in unison, "Welcome back, young master."
Ryle's gaze swept over them briefly, a flicker of acknowledgment in his eyes before he nodded and strode toward a sleek black car parked nearby.
Layla walked over and already held the door open for him.
Without a word, Ryle slid into the back seat, his demeanor cold and detached. Layla took her place in the passenger seat, and the driver started the engine, the car gliding smoothly away from the landing zone toward a mansion nestled among the trees.
The mansion loomed large and imposing, its structure a blend of old-world elegance and modern fortification.
Ryle exited the car, his expression unreadable as he walked through the grand entrance. Inside, the air was cool, and the atmosphere heavy with anticipation.
An elder, who appeared to be in his sixties but carried an air of ageless authority, stood waiting. His name was Steve Stone.
"Elder Steve, you called for me," Ryle's voice was steady, with an edge of impatience.
Steve nodded, his eyes piercing. "Welcome, Ryle."
Ryle didn't waste time with pleasantries. "What's the matter?"
Steve's expression softened slightly as he motioned for his butler. "What would you like to eat?"
Before Ryle could respond, Steve turned to the butler. "George, get the dinner ready." He then addressed Ryle, "Let's talk over dinner."
Ryle nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. He followed Steve to the dining room, where a lavish spread was being prepared.
The table was set meticulously, each detail reflecting the mansion's grandeur.
As they sat down, the tension in the room was palpable. The butler poured wine and served the first course, a delicate soup that Ryle barely acknowledged. His focus was entirely on Steve, waiting for him to speak.
Steve took a measured sip of his wine before meeting Ryle's gaze. "There's been an incident, Ryle. One of our enemies has targeted our local branch."
Ryle's eyes narrowed, a flicker of anger breaking through his stoic facade. "Which enemy?"
Steve leaned back, his expression grave. "An old rival, someone we've clashed with before. They’ve grown bolder, and their latest move was an attack on our facilities."
Ryle clenched his fists under the table. "Details. I need specifics."
Steve nodded, appreciating Ryle's directness. "It happened three days ago. A coordinated assault on our primary warehouse in the city. They managed to breach our defenses and caused significant damage. Several of our men were injured, and we lost a substantial amount of resources."
Ryle's mind raced, assessing the implications. "Who do you suspect?"
Steve's eyes darkened. "The Hunters. They've been quiet for too long, and this has their signature all over it."
Ryle's jaw tightened. "Why now? What’s their motive?"
Steve sighed, his age showing in that moment. "Control. They’re trying to destabilize us, to send a message that they’re still a force to be reckoned with."
Ryle leaned forward, his voice low and dangerous. "What do you need me to do?"
Steve's gaze was steady. "We need to retaliate, to show them that we won't be intimidated. But it has to be strategic, precise. I want you to lead the operation."
Ryle nodded, his mind already formulating a plan. "Consider it done. I'll gather a team and move out tonight."
Steve's expression softened, a rare moment of vulnerability. "Be careful, Ryle. They’re expecting a response, and they’ll be prepared."
Ryle stood, his resolve unshakable. "I won’t let them get away with this. They’ll regret ever crossing us."
Steve watched as Ryle walked out of the dining room, his posture rigid with his usual fierceness. As he left the mansion, Layla fell into step beside him, her presence a silent support.
"Gather the team," Ryle ordered, his voice cold and commanding. "We move out in an hour."
Layla nodded, her expression mirroring his intensity. "Understood."
The drive to the local branch was silent, the air thick with tension. Ryle's mind was a whirlwind of strategies and contingencies, his focus razor-sharp. The mansion disappeared behind them, replaced by the dark, sprawling cityscape.
When they arrived, the team was already assembled, their faces a mix of anger and fear. Ryle addressed them, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife.
"We've been attacked," he began, his tone leaving no room for doubt. "Our enemies think they can undermine us, but they’re gravely mistaken. Tonight, we strike back."
He laid out the plan with precision, each detail meticulously thought out. The team listened intently, their loyalty to Ryle unwavering.
