Chapter 48

“Make up your goddess-damn mind! Do you care enough to want me protected? Or do you hate me enough to torture me? Which fucking is it?!” I was done with his bipolar attitude towards me; hot one moment, cold the next. I did not know which was worse; physical torture or this bullshit that he keeps giving me.

Reid stilled, like he was struggling to find an answer for me.

It was so quiet inside the hospital room, that I could hear the change in the weather outside. I could hear the rain drops furiously hitting the ground, the cracks and booms of thunder a split-second after lightening lit up the room. The storm that I had sensed as we had walked here had started, and the wolves that had decided to attack was using it to their advantage, as cover to move around undetected on a dreary, wet night.

“You need to just shut up and move. I’ve got more important things to do than stand here dealing with your shit all night.”

“Alpha, we really need to go. I’m getting reports that they’ve made it further into the territory.” Dane leaned forward, trying to speed things up.

“Any idea on how many there are?”

“At the moment there’s not many, but they could just be the first team to hit because they have more training. We really don’t know how many more there could be.”

With one last glare at his Dad, as if he knew exactly what he had been speaking about, Reid spun on the spot and practically sprinted out the room.

From the hallway, he shouted, “Olivia! Let's go.”

I did not bother to look at Corbin, if I ever saw the cunt again then it would be too soon. I just followed Reid out with Dane bringing up the rear, encasing me between the two in a protective strategy.

“She is still technically the future Luna of Bloodmoon, she is to be kept safe at all times.”

It was not needed, but Reid had Alpha ordered his Beta to protect me. I snarled at their inability to have faith in a woman as we rushed towards the fight.

As soon as we stepped through the doors, we were drenched by the cold, heavy downpour. My hair instantly clung to my face, but being out in even Mother Nature’s worst was soothing. It felt fresh, freeing.

“Do you think that you would be able to change into your wolf?” Reid huffed as we raced.

“I don’t know; I can barely stay in contact with her, so I wouldn’t have thought so.”

Not having been able to look after myself since we were dragged here, I was panting, struggling to keep going at this pace yet alone keep up with these two. I started to slow down, a sharp pain searing through my side.

“Fuck sakes. If we get attacked, then I’m not saving your arse.”

Dane threatened me for them treating me shitty, and me not being able stay consistent when going for a little late-night stroll. He is such a bellend, blame the victim, right?

“You will, save her arse if we get attacked on our way to the border. That's exactly what I just told you, that is your job description; protect the fucking Luna.” He put emphasis on the word ‘will’, trying to drive it home that he is my personal bodyguard.

No sooner had he finished speaking, did a fully transformed wolf pounce out from the bushes that we were rushing by, landing on top of Reid. They both went rolling and crashing to the ground in a fit of snarls. By the time they had separated and had come to a standstill, Reid had changed into his magnificent and powerful jet-black wolf. His glossy coat shimmered as they pawed the ground, circling each other, spitting challenges.

Dane and I skidded to a halt, not sure if either of us should intervene. We briefly looked to each other, clueless yet stunned into silence as we watched one strikingly ferocious, and one mangey scruff of a wolf face each other off.

Gunner, Reid’s wolf, lunged for the other wolf’s throat faster than any normal eye could see. Before I could even blink, Gunner was holding a lump of flesh dripping with blood tightly in his mouth and the rogue tumbled to the ground dead. The substantial chunk missing from his throat was nearly enough to sever his head completely.

We did not have time to marvel over the sight before us though; we could hear a small pack of wolves pounding their paws on the ground through the woods, on their way straight to us.

‘Beaux? Do you think you could help?’

‘I’ll give it a go, but I don’t know how long I can hold it for.’

I searched deep inside for my wolf spirit, calling Beaux forth to take the reins from me.

I closed my eyes and lifted my arms, just as fur started to spring from my skin. My bones crunched as they repositioned themselves and grew or shortened in all the places that they needed to. My clothes shredded and the tattered remains fell to the soggy ground, the same time that I fell forward and gently landed on my fawn-coloured paws.

I shook my fur out, drops of rainwater flicking from me as I let out a low snarl ready for the oncoming fight.
