Chapter 56
The faint, almost imperceptible hum of the city’s distant pulse was the only sound permitted to penetrate the soundproofed walls of Frank’s penthouse office. He stood before a panoramic window, the glittering tapestry of the metropolis spread out beneath him like a personal kingdom. A half-empty tumbler of amber liquid sat on the polished mahogany desk, a faint scent of aged scotch lingering in the air. Frank wasn't a man who indulged in theatrics, but he appreciated control, and this view, this silence, offered a profound sense of it.
His phone, a sleek, custom-built device, vibrated softly in his hand. He didn't need to look at the caller ID; he knew who it was. The timing was precise, as it always was with his operations.
He brought the phone to his ear. "Status report," Frank's voice was a low rumble, calm and steady, betraying none of the anticipation coiled within him.
"We got him, boss," the voice on the other end, gruff and familiar, confirmed. It was Marcus, his most reliable field operative. "Henson is secured. He's in the van."
A flicker of satisfaction, cold and fleeting, crossed Frank’s face. "Excellent. No complications?"
There was a brief pause, a subtle shift in Marcus’s tone. "One. The guy who had him… he's dead. Shot."
Frank’s brow furrowed, a minute alteration in his otherwise impassive expression. "Dead? Our intel indicated he was to be subdued, not eliminated. Who fired?"
"Wasn't us, boss," Marcus quickly clarified, a hint of surprise in his voice. "Someone else got there first. Clean shot, silenced weapon. They were gone before we even registered them. We just moved in and secured the target as planned."
Frank’s gaze tightened, piercing the urban sprawl below. "Interesting. So, an unknown third party. Any details on this… benefactor?"
"Negative, boss. Fast in, fast out. But… there’s something else. The dead guy. He had a tracker on him. A small, sophisticated one. Looks like it was active."
The word 'tracker' snagged Frank’s attention like a barbed hook. His fingers tightened almost imperceptibly around his phone. "A tracker? Where was it sending data?"
"We're running diagnostics on it now, boss. Trying to decrypt the recipient. It wasn't one of ours, definitely not standard issue."
A slow, chilling smile spread across Frank’s lips, a predator recognizing a new, unexpected scent on the wind. "So, Thomas Henson isn't just a man who wronged a few people. He's a pawn in a game I hadn't fully recognized. This changes things."
He leaned back, the faint glow from the city reflecting in his unblinking eyes. "Bring Henson to the usual facility. Keep him isolated, but comfortable. And Matt, find out everything you can about that tracker. Every byte of data, every potential recipient. I want to know who else is playing with my toys."
"Understood, boss. What about the body?"
"Leave it. Let the authorities find it. Let them scratch their heads. It adds another layer of… intrigue." Frank’s gaze drifted from the window to the tumbler on his desk. He picked it up, swirling the amber liquid thoughtfully. "Thomas Henson thought he was escaping one trap. He has no idea he's just walked into a much larger, much more intricate cage. And now, it seems, he’s brought along a few uninvited guests."
He took a slow sip of scotch, the rich warmth a stark contrast to the cold, calculating gears turning in his mind. "Samantha's revenge was merely the appetizer. Now, the main course truly begins." The game was far more complex than he'd initially anticipated, and Frank, ever the master strategist, found himself invigorated by the new challenge. He looked forward to seeing how all the pieces would fall. Especially Thomas.
“Frank?” A sweet voice called out. Frank immediately jumped up. Delia.
She was awake.
“Hey, I'm up in here. You ok?” Frank said, hoping she hadn't heard to much of his phone call, he wanted to protect Delia and the unborn baby, he needed to get Thomas and speak to him. He needed Thomas hidden away.
“Couldn’t sleep?” she murmured, moving towards him with a soft smile. Her gaze flickered to the city lights, then back to his face, a touch of concern etching itself around her eyes. “You’re still up. Is everything alright?”
“Of course, don't worry.” Frank smiled, but his mind, however, was still alight with the new, unexpected challenge. A tracker. An unknown third party. The words echoed over the hum of the city. Thomas Henson, the target of Samantha’s revenge, was now a mere piece in a far larger, more dangerous puzzle. And he, Frank, was still the one holding the board.
