“A lot about me, huh?” Delia scoffed, pushing her chair back and standing up. She looked at Kylie with disgust. Her heart pounded as she placed her hands on her hips. “So, tell me. What sort of things did you hear about me?” She raised an eyebrow and waited for Kylie to answer.
Kylie opened her mouth and closed it again, the colour draining from her cheeks as she looked away in shame. Delia smirked. She thought about how alike Kylie looked to Samantha, but wondered if she had the same evil side. Could Kylie be trusted? She remembered how her father praised Kylie and said she was one of his best workers in the office.
“Umm, I guess I will leave you to it.” Kylie tried to escape the situation, but Delia wasn't so keen.
“You know, your sister isn't so trustworthy.” Delia could not help but bite. Kylie forced a smile and shrugged her shoulders. “I can only apologise for my sister's actions. She has not had it easy. But I am nothing like her. I'm a hard worker, and you can trust me. I swear I wouldn't risk my job for anything or anyone.” She clasped her hands together and sounded desperate to convince Delia of her worth.
“I'm sure that's the case, but I'd still like to know what you heard about me? I mean, I'm pretty sure Samantha wouldn't have a good word to say about someone like me since she was so busy and desperate to fuck my husband that she got pregnant!” Delia snapped harshly. She knew it wasn't Kylie’s fault, but it had opened old wounds that Delia wanted to forget. She gripped the edge of the table and swallowed hard. Her throat was dry, and her eyes could not look away from the girl, who looked like she was on the verge of tears.
“I promise I'm not a fan of my sister or her actions. She has always thought of herself, ever since we were kids. Our family would never approve of her actions.” Kylie pushed a stray strand of hair from her face and tried to steady her breathing.
Delia watched her for a moment, taking it all in. She wondered if Kylie was telling the truth. How did she know she could trust this girl wouldn't go running to Samantha with information? Delia flared her nostrils and rubbed her forehead, sighing and allowing her shoulders to sag slightly. Could she work alongside someone with such a strong connection to the one person she couldn't stand after her measly ex-husband?
“Delia, I hope we can be friends.” Kylie placed the clipboard on Delia's desk and stepped back nervously. Delia could see that Kylie was uncomfortable.
“I am just here with my father,” Delia finally managed to say. “But, let me make this clear. If you mess up here even once and I find out you are not to be trusted, then I will have your ass out of this company quicker than lightning. I hope you understand that. I can easily get you sacked if I want to.” Delia smirked as Kylie’s eyes widened and she gasped in disbelief. “Please, I love my job here and I wouldn't do anything to risk it,” she started to say.
Suddenly, Delia’s father entered the room with two coffees and a beaming grin.
“I bring coffee, my darling daughter. Are you settling in, my sweetheart? I was discussing next week's big meeting and thought it would be an ideal time for you to come along and see how it works,” he chirped as he walked right in, not noticing the tension in the air or Kylie in the room.
He looked up when Delia did not respond immediately to him. He frowned and then saw Kylie.
“Oh, I see you've met now. Well, I am sure you will both get along nicely, Delia. If you have any problems, then Kylie is perfect for assisting with anything.” he winked at Kylie, and Delia rolled her eyes.
“Thanks, Boss. I'd better get going, so I will leave it to you. It's nice to meet you, Delia.” Kylie lowered her eyes and turned to leave the room as quickly as he could.
“Oh, what was that all about?” Delia’s father blinked a few times as he looked up at the closed door and handed his daughter a coffee.
Delia regained her seat, allowing her body to sink into the comfort. “It seems that perfect little Kylie heard a lot about me, and did you know she's the sister of the bitch who Thomas had an affair with?” Delia hissed. She took the drink and brought it to her lips, slowly sipping.
“Oh, sweetheart,” her father suddenly realised and looked horrified. “I am ever so sorry. Thomas has a lot to answer for, but none of that is a reflection of Kylie. As I said before, she is a good worker, and I am sure you two will get along just great. Is there anything else you need from me? I have to go and check in with your mother and ensure she's okay.”
Delia waved her hand and pulled in her lower lip as she placed the coffee on the desk.
“No, this is going to be just fine. I know it.” A sly smile spread across her face.
He nodded and grabbed his phone before letting himself out of the room, leaving Delia alone with her thoughts.
Delia sipped her coffee and wondered how she would proceed with this now. Stress was not good for her or the baby, so she rubbed her pregnant belly and pulled out her phone. Scrolling through the notifications, she stopped on one that said Mia.
It had been a while since Delia had spoken to Mia, and she eagerly opened the message, but the contents were not what she was expecting.
“Thomas was attacked, and he's been in the hospital. I think you should keep yourself and the baby safe.”
