Chapter 2
“Don’t you dare use that word to describe Claire!”
Garrett’s eyes turned red as he chased after me.
“I told you, it was just an accident.”
But I couldn’t be bothered to respond.
I walked to the parking lot and tried to drive away, but searched through all my pockets and couldn’t find my keys anywhere.
“Looking for this?”
Garrett behind me dangled my car keys, smiling coldly.
“Give them back.”
The next second he threw them down the storm drain.
“You can leave, but only after the dinner’s over.”
“You know if you’re not there, they’ll gossip about Claire.”
“That wouldn’t be good for her.”
I stared at him, my eyes filling with bitter irony.
“She deserves it!”
He wasn’t ignorant of how Claire had been criticized all these years after killing my mom.
He wanted me to stay at the dinner just to create the illusion that Claire and I got along fine.
But I was too lazy to put on their little show, and I sure as hell wouldn’t accommodate a murderer.
No car keys? Fine, I’d walk. I headed slowly toward the exit.
This was a mountain villa. Just driving down would take half an hour.
Laughter came from behind me.
“Nora, walking down on two legs like that? You’ll be here till next year.”
“Garrett, you don’t need to come with me. Just drive and give Nora a ride down, or something might happen to her…”
In the reflection, I saw Garrett’s face full of gentle, doting affection.
“Don’t worry about her. Let’s go back to the dinner,”
I walked along the mountain road for who knows how long, until my feet were covered in blisters. I took off my shoes and carried them, continuing forward.
At least it wasn’t too late–I could still make it for my mom’s memorial.
Just as I was completely exhausted, a car honked behind me.
“Get in.”

Chapter 2
The window rolled down and I saw Felix Reed’s handsome, refined face.
“Uncle Felix?”
I was stunned. “When did you get back from abroad?”
“Just got back yesterday.”
I realized yesterday was the day I took that flight–the day we almost crashed.
Before I could react, Felix had gotten out of the car and scooped me up in his arms.
“How’d you get yourself in such a mess?”
In the dim car interior, Felix’s face was close to mine, his voice gentle with a trace of heartache.
I felt myself blushing. “Nothing much. Just got divorced.”
Felix looked at me intently. “Divorced?”
I nodded. “Decided to give myself a break.”
We were quiet for a long time. Felix seemed distracted, lost in thought.
It wasn’t until we reached the bottom of the mountain that he asked:
“Straight to the cemetery? I’ve got the cake ready.”
My eyes welled up. Turns out someone besides me still remembered my mom’s memorial day.
I nodded. “Thanks, Uncle Felix.”
We got out at the cemetery and I carefully arranged the cake, inserting the candles.
My mom loved sweets when she was alive. I celebrated her birthday every year, but this year I almost missed it.
I stood up and suddenly felt a warm flow from below, my whole body going rigid.
Noticing something was wrong, Felix took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.
“Wait here, I’ll go buy you some pads.”
I kept my head down and hummed in response.
As he drove away, I watched his figure and felt something gently strike my heart–warm and fuzzy.
The candles flickered and danced like fireflies floating past my mom’s grave.
I was talking to my mom when suddenly, car after car pulled up near the cemetery.
“Nora, didn’t expect you’d really be here. I guessed right.”
Claire’s persistent voice drifted over.
I looked up coldly, on guard.
But I met Garrett’s disapproving gaze instead.
“This is all because you had to throw a tantrum and ruin a perfectly good dinner.”
“Thank god Claire was thoughtful enough to suggest we come keep you company for your mom’s memorial.”

Chapter 2
I ignored them and just said coldly:
“All of you get out.”
But they didn’t respond, instead wandering around the grave site, even pointing and commenting.
“Who would’ve thought Miss Reed was so cheap when it came to her own mother–buying such a worthless plot. The environment doesn’t look great either.”
“Everyone says Miss Reed is so filial, but if she really was, how could she just watch her mom die and still haven’t caught the killer?TM
Claire listened to all this with smug satisfaction.
I clenched my fists. I’d almost gotten Claire sent to prison back then, but at the crucial moment Garrett stepped forward and secretly filed a
settlement agreement.
“Nora, your mom’s car accident was just that–an accident.”
But looking at the triumphant smile on Claire’s face, I knew that wasn’t the truth at all.
I took a deep breath, about to throw them out.
But Claire blew out the birthday candles I was supposed to blow, then blinked innocently:
“I thought it looked fun, so I blew them out for you first. You don’t mind, right, Nora?”
I grabbed the whole cake with its freshly extinguished candles and smashed it right into her face.
“Try this–is this fun too?”
