Vulnerability does it all
Vulnerability does it all
Jessica's POV.
David navigated the way to a safehouse. The red sun burned through my back but I wasn't moved as my priority was nothing but getting David to safety.
Our bike being the only vehicle on the road made us feel safe for a while. I wanted to continue the conversation we started earlier on but I could feel his fatigue through the heavy weight his body threw at me. This almost made the bike fall but his reflex called out his name to stay awake.
I couldn't help but think of Henry and what he was going through. He was the actual definition of loyalty, sacrificing his life to protect David. Those are hard to come by these days. Everyone just wants to reach the top without caring who they stab in the back to get what they want.
David pointed at an house with all his whole strength like it was his last hope of survival. As I accelerated the bike, its fuel gave out leaving us nothing but a sight of the house.
I parked the bike on the edge of the road and ignored the walk way that led to the house but taking the shorter route to save David.
It was now more difficult for him to move as the leg was looking swollen and almost infected.
“It's okay. We're almost there. Just a little bit longer.” I convinced him with his arm around my shoulder, his eyes slowing closing. I started walking fast through the low grass we walked on. As the house started appearing bigger, the details started revealing itself.
A blue painted house with oval shaped windows. The familiarity of the house struck in until we got very close and I realized that it was the first house David took me to after Victor first attacked.
The emptiness of the house led me to experiencing the quiet lifestyle without having any responsibilities to cater for. Something which felt unhealthy at first but later proved to be refreshing during my breakdown days.
As the house became totally visible to our sight, a bunch of life activities looked like they were coming towards us.
A tractor came very quickly to pick Victor up.
“Mrs. Jessica, good afternoon.” An old man greeted with his voice that sounded like wisdom itself. “Henry informed us you would be coming and we are to make everything comfortable for Mr. David and provide him with medical attention. The doctor is inside.” His accent was funny, tempting to laugh at but the situation at hand killed my humor.
I looked at David to see that his eyes were almost closed shot. He was carried away in the tractor while I was relieved to catch my breath and feel my arms. Having a man lean on someone should never be a job.
As David was taken into the house, I couldn't help but wonder who wanted to take our lives.
I suspected Victor but then he had no motive for doing that. But I can never be sure with him so I added him to the list of people who would want to hurt David and I.
Another person who was to be suspected was Andre. My mind wondered if he hadn't died truly but was just faking his death so he could plot out his master revenge. My heart trembled even at the thought of him. I couldn't forget everything he did to me and the way I felt.
I was also convinced that his ghost came back to life to hunt both David and I because we contributed on the rest.
Or what if there was someone entirely in the field that we have to start looking out for. For our own safety.
As I entered into the house, I was greeted by the noise of everyone in the house. It was crowded unlike the first time I stayed. There were people at the living room who gathered their weapons and checked if they were loaded as if they were going for war. Their movements and the way they handled the gun said something about them; they were professionals and they knew what they were doing.
Moving on to the dining room, another set of men sat down in chairs. Their uniforms and movement were less aggressive and more strategic. Their movements of hands and light voices showed that they were men of articulation and intellect. The maps in front of them looked as if they were planning the Berlin conference all over again.
The kitchen was occupied with food cooked in large quantities as if one was cooking for the whole nation. I understood that there was a large number if people in the house but I had no idea how that much food would be preserved.
All these were a way of keeping myself distracted so I won't have to start feeling the pain that David himself was going through. The best way to stay calm is to distract yourself by using something very far away from what you're thinking of.
All my composition in maintaining my distraction were cut short when I heard David's scream from upstairs.
I ran up to stay with him. I wanted to let him know I was with him and I shared his pain with him .
As I climbed the last step that separated the ground floor from the first floor, the hallways became silent again. It wasn't as crowded as the down floor. As soon as I heard the scream once more, I dashed to the room the sound came from and I assured David I was with him.
I held his hand thorougout the pain and I wondered if he would survive the pain, something that had never happened before.
Out of the experience I had today, something terrified me and it was the fact that I was able to stay calm throughout the whole period.
I didn't know what it was but I can't help but shake the thought that what if this is where I'm actually comfortable with. With the chaos and the mayhem that Davida world had to present.
I need to find out who I've become and r
emember who I used to be so I can know how to move forward.
