Chapter 94 More Consequences
Serena's POV
I wanted to text back, but then looked up to see Dante with an outstretched hand in my direction.
I gulped and walked over as fast as I could, wondering if telling him would be the best decision.
I jumped into the backseat with Dante and Nico into the front as the car peeled out carefully before zooming off.
I struggled with holding the words back as I feared it could easily come true.
Dante didn't look my way for the majority of the ride. I pulled out my phone and texted the unknown number back.
“What should I do?”
It replied almost immediately.
“Nothing.”
I was more confused now than before.
“???”
“You just said he may die, we should just let him?”
I texted back and it replied almost immediately again.
“It's beyond your power now. He himself knew the consequences of the action he took.”
I gulped hard while texting back.
“What of our escape plan?”
It replied. “I can help you with that, but bear in mind that Dante won't let you go easily.”
I replied sharply. “I don't think he would have any problem finding someone new.”
It didn't reply immediately and I shoved my phone back into my bag and leaned my head on the glass.
Whatever happened now, I had to think of more than myself. Things weren't going to get any easier.
Dante's POV
I stared at her through the rearview mirror at the top of the car.
She went from being busy on her phone to looking like all was lost over again.
Thinking back to what I did earlier, I had no choice. She didn't quite understand the repercussions of having the elder against you.
For as long as we approached him for help, we had to dance to his music or suffer by it.
By the time we pulled into the parking lot of the penthouse, I practically threw off the bow tie I had on.
I was suffocating and hated how I looked on it anyway.
Serena stepped out carefully and made her way inside. I watched her all the way.
“You think she'll get over it,” Nico asked as he approached where I sat with my door open.
“She will, I'll talk to her,” I replied.
“We've got to go again tomorrow,” Nico remarked.
“Unfortunately, the journey is long, and frankly, switching territories daily puts mine at risk,” I replied.
“Let's get this over with tomorrow, then we can handle other important matters,” Nico added.
“Any idea how operations are going on at the casinos, clubs and restaurants?” I asked.
Nico shook his head. “No word as of now, but all should be running smoothly with the new inflows,” he replied.
I nodded and stepped out as he made space for me.
I shut the door behind me and made my way towards the building.
“Tomorrow, Don,” Nico called out as he fell behind.
I waved a hand into the air at him and strolled back into the building.
Inside, I was greeted by Valentina's warm smile.
“Welcome, Don,” she said as I walked in. She had the two children at her feet and I could just tell that Serena didn't react well to seeing them.
“Serena was here?” I asked in response.
“Yeah, she was acting strange though. Did everything go well over there?” She asked.
I nodded before walking past her. “She'll get over it soon,” I added.
I walked over to the elevator and made my way up the floors.
I strolled towards my room, but stopped at Serena's to peep in.
I pushed the door slightly to make a little gap and slotted my head through it.
She was staring at the mirror and doing something with her hair.
I thought of leaving, but my leg carried me all the way inside.
She turned as I walked in and looked away immediately.
“Serena,” I called.
“Yes, sir,” she replied in a monotone voice.
“Are you really going to hold this against me?” I asked.
She remained silent still, pretending to have something serious to do with the mirror.
“Serena,” I called out.
“What is it, Dante? I believe you made your mind clear back at the elder's office,” she replied.
I wondered exactly what she was talking about, then my mind went back to when I said it was all cause of pride.
I laughed softly and strolled over to her bed, dropping down on it carefully.
“Serena, you really took everything I said back there to heart?” I asked.
“What do you think?” She replied.
“You are still very new to all these. You don't know what it means to be a leader,” I replied bluntly.
“That's really smooth, Dante. You couldn't think of a harsher reply?” She replied bitterly.
“I could think of a few, but we don't need to hear them,” I replied nonchalantly.
“How poetic,” she responded to that and I spotted her eyes rolling through the mirror.
I took a deep breath and let a few minutes of silence rest between us.
“Look, Serena. I had to say what I had to say back then. When you are a leader, you can't show any sign of weakness, especially in front of other leaders,” I replied honestly.
“So I'm now a weakness?” She asked immediately.
“I lost 180 billion dollars cause of you and you aren't dead. What do you think?” I shot back honestly.
She fell silent and stared at the mirror before slowly turning around to face me.
“But why? What's so special about me?” She asked.
I smiled and stood up. “That, you'll find out very soon. But for now? I hope we are on the same page tomorrow,” I replied as I got closer to her.
“You mean the page of selling off my kids?” She asked.
“Yeah, that's the one,” I replied with a smile.
She didn't look impressed and I placed a hand on her chin, lifting her eyes to meet mine.
“Do this and we bait Luca to come at us, and if he does? We take him and everything he owns down without any consequence. With Luca out of the picture, a new deal can be reached that would swing everything in our favor,” I explained.
“Woah,” she remarked.
“Look at the big picture, Serena,” I replied with a smile. “I want the best for us.”
Then I tried to steal a kiss but she evaded it.
I smiled and refused to push it. “Get set for tomorrow,” I replied and walked out.
I took a quick shower and laid down to rest. That took me all the way to the morning as the sun burned over my eyes.
I got up, hit the showers again and got dressed afterwards, avoiding anything that resembled a bow tie.
I went with a tie at once and matched it all with the right shoes.
My phone buzzed at the table, I picked it up and saw a message from a number I didn't know.
I wanted to ignore it till I caught sight of my name in one of the messages.
I opened it up and read the full text.
“So you think you can go behind my back and make a mockery of my brother's death, Dante?”
“Actions have consequences, and here's one.”
Attached was a video. My finger shook as it hovered over the play button before finally clicking it.
