Chapter 51 – Not a Date (Definitely a Date)
Chapter 51 – Not a Date (Definitely a Date)
“So,” I said, nudging Lucas with my elbow as we walked out of the East Building for once not being chased by something from a horror movie, “is this the part where you ask me out, or…?”
He arched an eyebrow. “Do you always flirt after almost dying?”
I smirked. “Only with people who look hot while fighting off demonic versions of themselves.”
Lucas made a strangled sound. “I was bleeding, Rae.”
“And still somehow attractive. It’s unfair. What are you, a cursed Calvin Klein model?”
He gave me a look that was half amused, half exasperated, and completely Lucas. “You’re ridiculous.”
“Yep.” I grinned. “And you’re into it.”
He didn’t deny it.
Instead, he reached out and took my hand—casually, like it was the most normal thing in the world. Like we hadn’t just come from confronting yet another mirror-possessed classmate. Like the world wasn’t teetering on the edge of disaster.
My heart gave a full-body lurch.
We didn’t say anything for a moment. Just walked. Together. Our fingers laced, warm and real.
Maybe this was what normal couples did.
Except, of course, we weren’t a normal couple.
“So, about Jamie,” Lucas said quietly, as if reading my mind.
There it was. Reality.
“He’s still in there,” I said, my smile slipping. “Trapped. Like we were.”
Lucas nodded. “And we still don’t know how to pull someone out without switching with them.”
“We can’t keep playing body-swap musical chairs,” I said. “Eventually someone’s going to notice. And one of us might not come back.”
Lucas’s grip tightened on mine. “We’ll figure it out. I’m not letting that mirror win.”
I swallowed. “And what if it’s not just Jamie? What if more people get pulled in?”
“Then we stop it. Together.”
I hated how steady he sounded. Like he believed in us more than I believed in gravity.
We stopped in front of my house. The porch light was on, casting a warm halo over the front step.
Lucas hesitated. “You want me to—?”
“Come in?” I asked.
His ears went pink. “I meant walk you to the door.”
“Oh. Right.” I tried to pretend I wasn’t the one who suddenly wanted him to stay forever.
We climbed the steps in silence, stopping just short of the door.
Lucas scratched the back of his neck. “This whole… thing. With the mirrors. With us. It’s complicated.”
I nodded. “Yeah. But not bad complicated.”
His gaze met mine. “So… where does this leave us?”
“You mean like, what are we?” I said, teasing.
Lucas groaned. “Please don’t make me define the relationship on your doorstep like some nervous teen movie love interest.”
I grinned. “You totally are the love interest, though.”
“I thought you were the main character.”
“Plot twist,” I said. “We’re co-leads.”
Lucas leaned against the porch post, eyes warm. “I like the sound of that.”
I stepped closer. “So… you’re not gonna kiss me again, huh?”
He tilted his head. “You’re the one who kissed me last time, remember?”
“Ugh, are we keeping score now?”
Lucas stepped forward, closing the distance, and this time he kissed me—gentle at first, then a little deeper, like he couldn’t help himself.
When we pulled apart, my head was spinning in the best way.
“That,” he said softly, “was definitely not nothing.”
My voice came out a little breathless. “You should probably go before my parents peek out and see me kissing a boy who’s technically been inside my body.”
Lucas choked. “You had to phrase it like that.”
I laughed as I opened the door. “Goodnight, Lucas.”
He was still shaking his head when he turned to leave. “You’re going to be the death of me.”
I grinned. “You love it.”
He didn’t argue.
The next day at school was somehow even weirder than usual.
Rumors about Jamie’s disappearance were swirling. His parents had called the school, worried. His friends said he hadn’t answered any messages. And the only people who really knew what was happening were me, Lucas, and Lena.
Who, by the way, had officially decided she was now the “team’s operations manager.”
“Because every good supernatural squad needs one,” she said, marching into the library with a clipboard. “We are now officially Team Mirror. And before you make fun of the name, I already trademarked it.”
“You what?” I blinked.
Lucas deadpanned, “We’re a start-up now?”
“I made a logo,” Lena added, flipping her clipboard around to show us a sparkly sticker with the words Team Mirror: Reflect. Resist. Rescue. underneath a cracked mirror graphic.
“…Okay that’s actually kind of badass,” I admitted.
“I know,” she said smugly.
We huddled in the corner of the library, surrounded by piles of books about folklore, mythology, and obscure mirror legends.
“Nothing in here says how to reverse a swap without someone going in,” Lena muttered, flipping pages like a caffeinated scholar. “But I did find something weird in this one.”
She pointed to an old myth about “mirror twins”—two souls forever connected through reflection, capable of entering and exiting each other’s worlds only through trust and shared emotion.
Lucas and I exchanged a look.
“You don’t think…” I started.
“That we’re the mirror twins?” Lucas said. “I mean, it would explain a lot.”
Lena leaned forward. “It also says that only by ‘unlocking the truth of the heart’ can the connection be severed.”
“Sounds dramatic,” I said.
“Sounds romantic,” Lena corrected.
Lucas groaned. “Sounds like it means we have to kiss again.”
I blinked. “Wow. Tragic.”
He gave me a dry look, but his ears turned pink again.
Lena made a fake gagging sound. “Ugh. Get a mirror realm.”
I laughed, and even Lucas cracked a smile.
For a moment, everything felt light again.
But the moment didn’t last.
Because just as we were packing up, Lucas’s phone buzzed with a message.
He went pale.
“What is it?” I asked.
He turned the screen toward us.
It was a photo.
Of me.
Staring into a cracked mirror.
Eyes glazed.
Sent from an unknown number.
And the caption read: Your turn.
Cliffhanger Ending:
Lucas’s hands trembled as he clutched the phone.
“That’s… not from today,” I whispered. “I haven’t worn that shirt since—”
“Last week,” Lena said. “During the first incident.”
“But I never looked into that mirror,” I said, voice shaky.
Lucas stood abruptly, jaw clenched.
“Then who took that photo?”
The phone buzzed again.
See you soon, Rae.
We all stared at the screen in stunned silence.
Whatever was behind the mirror…
It was watching.
And it wanted me next.
