Chapter 63: CHAPTER 63

KYLE XANDER SILVERBACK

I’ve seen this play coming from a mile ago, even before it hits the surface. The minute the last air left Culdron’s lungs, I knew they were coming, and it was only a matter of time.

“Kyle, Echo, Dom and Lucian. You Silverbacks are under arrest for the murder of King Culdron. You all have breached the law of the Pack, and have taken a life of an Alpha, and that of a King. You will be taken to Azkaban where you’ll await trial.”

Grand guardian, Mphesto utters before taking my brothers and I away from the Academy.

“No!”

I can hear Lyra’s silent breath thundering in my ears as the rest of us make it into the black SUV.

There’s tension spreading over Grimhowl as everything goes quiet. The silence is vast and the only I hear is their beating heart against their ribcages.

“Why would guys do such a stupid thing,” Professor Edwina retorts, and I shift my gaze away from her to the girl with green eyes staring down at us.

For a moment, Lyra is all I can think about as the vehicle sprint off into the darkness. The longer the distance apart from her, the more it stretches my heart, thin, and the pull is more painful that any physical torture I been through before.

I don’t need anyone to tell me what is going through the mind and heart of my brothers, I know they feel the same thing I’m feeling at the moment. No matter how much we would love to diverge on the topic, but we can’t take away the fact that they’ve been some form of attraction we’ve had for raven-haired girl.

And the fact that we have feelings for the same girl, makes it all the creepier.

Or maybe Lucian’s right.

Maybe she’s our…

The sound of claws scrapping bone pulls me away from my thought. The second the sharp scent of blood wraps at the back of my nostrils, it unsettles me, and slams my heart against my ribcage.

“What the fuck is going on?” Echo’s voice is the first to rupture through the mind-link, followed immediately but Dom’s.

“Is that blood I smell?”

Before I can process what in the sevens is going on, the car takes a swivel, and turns in the left direction, colliding with the steel lines by the road side, before taking a tumble into the woods. The minute it comes to a halt, I feel blood dripping into my eyes, and that’s because I’ve taken a nasty cut on the right side above my brows.

“This is getting interesting,” Dom retorts, and the rest of us throw our gaze at him.

“How so, Dom?” Lucian asks. “We should be getting ready to rip anyone apart the moment these doors open.”

And he is not wrong.

Whoever is doing this doesn’t want us to get to Azkaban. And he surely doesn’t want us to face trial and the high court.

“Maybe it’s revenge,” Echo utters, and a feeling slams into my lungs. “Someone wants revenge for the death of Culdron.”

I can hear my brother’s sharp breathing as they position themselves up for a fight. We can’t shift into our wolves, and that’s because the inside of this SUV is coated with silver, and there’s a slight wolfsbane leaking through the ventilators.

These are all ploys to keep my brothers and I weak and sedated.

My focus sharpens because once those doors open, we’ll get the energy we need, and also, the help of the silver moonlight.

The huge heavy steel inch door slides open, and for a brief second, there’s no one on the other side of it.

“Well, what are you guys waiting for?”

A voice ripples from the outside, and it’s a familiar one.

Grand guardian, Mphesto.

His face pops in front of us, and from the distance, I can see blood everywhere on him. Smell it on him, too.

“Let’s go,” he growls, and I’m the first to step out of the vehicle. Echo follows, and Lucian before Dom joins.

Once under the silver moonlight, I feel my wolf surfacing and my eyes slowly bleeding into a shade of red. Same with the rest of my brothers.

There is a look on Mphesto’s face. It almost as if what he did was for our own benefits, but looking at it, I don’t see how it is.

“Why?” Echo snarls, and Mphesto hold his hand to his nose.

“Can’t we just get to safety, first. Then I’ll explain,” he retorts. “For all we know, the Order may very well be breeding down our necks.”

“So, you’re helping us escape?” Lucian utters, and Mphesto’s brows knot together.

“Isn’t that it looks like?” he responds, but nothing is moving my brothers and me. “If the Order finds us out here with their crows, then it’ll be really difficult for us to get to safe heaven.”

“Then I suggest you start talking,” I cut in. “Unless you want the Order to know what has happen here today.”

Mphesto takes a lungful of cloying air before parting his lips to speak.

“Fine,” he groans. “What do you guys want to know about? It seems like you guys would have preferred Azkaban and facing trial in which you would have all be convicted, than me saving your assess.”

“Saving our assess means we being on the run forever from the Order,” Echo responds. “I believe I would rather face death than be chased and cut down like an animal.”

Echo is right.

“I hear you, Echo,” Mphesto replies. “But the Order isn’t what it used to be.”

“What do you mean, guardian,” Lucian chips in. “What do you mean, used to be?”

Mphesto bites down on his bottom lips before speaking, and it gives me time to listen to the rhythm of his heartbeat to tell if he’s telling us the truth, or not.

“The Dark One grasps has infiltrated into the Order. They seek a girl, and they believe the four of you know about this particular girl that can bring about their end.”

I shift my gaze to Lucian, and Dom, and they do the same thing to the rest of us.

“And you alone are against them?” Echo retorts, and I await his response.

“No, guardian. I was sent by the Ulfrida to rescue you guys. She believes you all play at vital part in her ascension.”

“You are a part of the Dothar?” Lucian utters, and the word spikes my eardrum.

“Wait,” Echo mutters. “You’ve got to be kidding me. I though the Dothar was some kind of myth. A group of people raised to prepare the way for the comet, or so, mother use to say.”

Everything seems like fairytale to me, but the stance in Mphesto’s eyes and he settles his gaze into the depth of Lucian, tells me there’s something going on that I’m not aware about. The minute I turn to Lucian, and don’t need him, or anyone else to tell me the truth running at the back of my head.

“You are one of them, aren’t you, brother?” I say, and Lucian doesn’t even flinch.”

“Wait a minute,” Dom mutters this time around. “Are you trying to tell me you’ve known about this all this while, and you couldn’t mention a damn word that you’ve been initiated?”

Lucian shut his eyes for a second and when he opens them, the first person they fall on, is me.

“I tried, remember,” Lucian responds. “All those years ago. I tried telling you guys, but none of you would listen to me, despite mother warnings of not letting my brother on the need to know.”

Hearing my mother’s involvement doesn’t come as a surprise to me. if there was anyone who would have known about this was her. It’s safe to say she got her favorite initiated before passing on to the immortal world.

“We can all talk about this, later,” Mphesto jumps in, and breaks up the tension. Echo and Dom were already squaring up to Lucian, and something had to be done before the matter escalates, further.

“Enough, guys,” I snap in, immediately. “Now is not the time to be throwing fingers around. If what guardian Mphesto says is true, then I believe as guardians, we have an obligation to fulfil.”

“But Kyle,” Echo steps in. “If we do this, then we may as well forget our heritage, and the fact that we are also royalties.”

“Not only do we have an obligation as guardians of the realm,” Lucian cuts in, and Dom and Echo give him the cold stare. But that doesn’t move from saying the rest of what he has to say. “We wrongly killed her sister. We owe it to her, as much as we owe it to ourselves.”

The silence that stretches is louder than the beating of our heartbeat. It takes more than a second for us to come to an agreement. We are about to follow guardian Mphesto when something suddenly ruptures through the earth and blocks our passage way.

The minute we lock gaze on it; we don’t need anyone to tell us to shift into our wolf forms.

It’s a bloody Were-wrym.
