The Hunt Begins

The Hunt Begins

Marcus's POV

The communication crystal shattered in Marcus's hand, cutting his palm as the High Priestess's words faded away. Blood dripped onto the forest floor, but he barely noticed the pain. His whole body was shaking with excitement.

"She's alive," he mumbled to himself, grinning like a madman. "The StarBlood wolf is actually alive."

For three days, he'd been tracking Lyra through the Shadowlands, following her scent trail until it simply disappeared near the border. He'd assumed she died from blood loss or got eaten by the shadow things that lived in those cursed woods.

But then strange things started happening back at Ironclad Pack. Wolves were getting sick with a weird sickness that made them weak and tired. The pack's doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong. Some of the older wolves whispered about ancient curses, but Marcus had laughed at their beliefs.

Until Alpha Kieran called him into his office this morning.

"The sickness is spreading," the Alpha had said, his face gray with fear. "Half our troops can barely stand. Our crops are dying. Even the river water tastes wrong."

"What does this have to do with the escaped slave?" Marcus had asked, though something cold was crawling up his spine.

"Elder Thorne said something before we executed him," Alpha Kieran responded. "He claimed that binding a StarBlood wolf would curse our pack. That only her willing forgiveness could break it."

Marcus had felt his blood turn to ice. StarBlood wolves were just tales. Ancient stories about the first werewolves who were blessed by celestial powers. They were thought to be extinct.

But what if they weren't?

What if Lyra really was StarBlood, and he'd been too stupid to realize it?

That's when he'd called High Priestess Morgana through the emergency crystal she'd given him years ago. The moment he told her about Lyra's unusual blood and the pack's mysterious curse, Morgana's excitement had been frightening.

"Describe everything," she'd ordered. "Her scent, her blood, every detail about her abilities."

When Marcus ended his report, there was a long silence. Then Morgana started laughing - a sound like breaking glass that made his teeth hurt.

"You fool," she'd said. "You had the last StarBlood wolf in your hands for three years, and you nearly killed her before I could get what I need."

"What do you mean, last StarBlood wolf?"

"I killed her parents twenty years ago," Morgana had hissed. "I thought I got all of them, but somehow their baby survived. Do you have any idea how strong her blood is? How much I need it for my ritual?"

Marcus's hands had started shaking. "She's just a weak slave. She can't even shift properly."

"Because her power has been suppressed by trauma and your pathetic fake mate bond!" Morgana had snapped. "StarBlood magic reacts to love and trust, not fear and abuse. But it's still there, ready to be awakened."

That's when she'd given him new orders. Find Lyra. Bring her back living. The ritual to make Morgana the supreme ruler of all werewolves needed a living StarBlood sacrifice, not a dead one.

"And Marcus," she'd added in a voice that made his blood freeze, "if you fail me again, you'll wish you'd never been born."

Now, as he wrapped his cut hand, Marcus tried to figure out where Lyra could have gone. The Shadowlands were huge and dangerous. Most wolves avoided them because of the dark creatures that hunted there.

But there were reports. Whispered stories about a strange Alpha who lived somewhere in those dark woods. They called him the Phantom Alpha, and some said he gathered outcasts and rebels.

If those stories were true, and if this Phantom Alpha had found Lyra...

Marcus's phone buzzed with a text message. The number was blocked, but he recognized the sender instantly.

The hunt begins at midnight. Come to the old graveyard outside Millfield. Bring ten of your best trackers. - M

Morgana was coming herself. That meant she was taking this seriously.

Marcus felt a chill run down his spine. He'd worked with the High Priestess for years, selling her information about pack politics and rarely providing her with magical ingredients. But he'd never seen her in person. The stories about her power were frightening.

Still, if he could bring Lyra to her, the rewards would be incredible. Morgana had promised him life and power beyond his wildest dreams. He'd never have to bow to another Alpha again.

He chose his ten best hunters and sent them messages to meet him at the cemetery. Then he began preparing for the hunt. Special tracking tools, weapons meant to capture rather than kill, and most importantly, the enchanted chains Morgana had sent him through magical transport.

"These will hold even a fully awakened StarBlood wolf," her note had explained. "But be careful. If she's truly united with the Phantom Alpha, her power will be stronger than ever."

As the sun set, Marcus drove toward Millfield with his hunting group. The old graveyard sat on a hill overlooking the town, filled with graves from the early 1800s. Local stories claimed it was built on a place where the first werewolves made a pact with celestial spirits.

Perfect place for Morgana to show up.

The hunters arrived first, parking their cars in a circle around the cemetery gates. Marcus checked his watch: 11:58 PM.

At exactly midnight, the temperature dropped twenty degrees in seconds. Frost began forming on the gravestones, and every wolf present felt their instincts yelling at them to run.

A figure materialized in the middle of the cemetery, surrounded by swirling shadows that moved like living things. High Priestess Morgana looked younger than Marcus had expected, maybe thirty-five, with silver hair and eyes that glowed purple in the darkness.

But there was something wrong about her. Something that made every animal impulse recoil in horror.

"Marcus," she said, her voice carrying easily across the graveyard despite being barely a whisper. "I trust you have news about our runaway StarBlood."

"We lost her trail at the Shadowlands border," Marcus reported, trying to keep his voice steady. "But I think I know where she might be."

Morgana smiled, and Marcus instantly regretted speaking. Her teeth were too sharp, and shadows seemed to move behind her eyes.

"The Phantom Alpha," she said. "Yes, I've been wondering when Darius Nightfall would surface again."

Marcus's blood went cold. "You know who he is?"

"Oh, Marcus," Morgana laughed, and the sound made several of his hunts whimper. "Did you really think this was all coincidence? That your little slave just happened to escape into the one place where the exiled heir to the Celestial Court was hiding?"

The world seemed to tilt around Marcus. "What are you saying?"

Morgana's smile grew bigger, and now he could see that her teeth were definitely not human.

"I'm saying, dear Marcus, that you've been my puppet from the very beginning. The fake mate bond, the blood harvesting, even Lyra's dramatic escape - all of it has been carefully arranged to lead us to this moment."

"That's impossible. I chose to use the fake mate link. I chose to drain her blood."

"Did you?" Morgana asked, turning her head like a curious predator. "Or did I plant those ideas in your mind during our very first meeting five years ago?"

Marcus tried to remember that first meeting, but his thoughts felt fuzzy, like trying to recall a dream.

"You see," Morgana continued, "I needed the StarBlood wolf to awaken her true power. Fear and abuse would never achieve that. But love? Trust? A link with her true mate?" She clapped her hands together like a happy child. "That would unlock everything I need."

"True mate?" Marcus whispered.

"Oh yes," Morgana said. "Lyra and Darius are intended partners. Their bond will make her power shine like a light, calling to me across any distance." She raised her hand, and Marcus felt magical energy building in the air. "Which means it's time to collect my prize."

The shadows around Morgana began moving faster, taking forms that looked almost like wolves made of pure darkness.

"What are those things?" one of Marcus's searchers whispered.

"My children," Morgana responded. "Shadow wolves born from the void between worlds. They can track StarBlood magic across any distance, and they hunger for celestial light."

As the shadow wolves started moving toward the cemetery gates, their red eyes glowing in the darkness, Marcus realized he'd made a terrible mistake.

He wasn't Morgana's partner in this hunt.

He was just another tool she planned to use and throw away.

"Now then," Morgana said, her voice holding impossible authority, "let's go collect our little star before she learns to shine too brightly."
