Chapter 90: Truth
~ Ronan’s Pov ~
I opened the front door as Anyssa walked inside the house. I followed suit, dropping her luggage on the couch.
She stood in the middle of the house, hands crossed over each other in front of her.
“I want to know everything.”
After the scene at the house, she had decided to come home with me. I didn't refuse, and this time, I would tell her everything she needed to know.
“I don't want lies. I don't want you to sugarcoat it for me. I need to know what happened, even if I don't remember it. Please, I need to know, Ronan. I need to know everything.”
“It started with the car crash.”
I walked right up to her and held her hand, pulling her close to the other couch as I sat. Her eyes were teary, and I could tell she was scared.
“Mavis had somehow blackmailed you into leaving the city with him, and somehow, you alerted me. I was so scared that I left what I was doing and ran to you…but I was too late.”
I shivered, a cold wave washing over my body. I could still remember the way my eyes watered, seeing both my son and the love of my life unconscious.
I did try to save both of them. But when I got to Mavis, the paramedics confirmed he was already dead—right on the spot. I know it was my fault, stripping him of everything and forcing him into that decision. Every day since that day, I have done nothing but blame myself.
What kind of a father does that? Push his own son away till his own death.
But looking at the woman who has my heart, I don't regret saving her.
“I felt so guilty—and even worse when you felt like you killed him. It was ruled an accident, and you were admitted because you survived. I thought I could move on, until you felt so bad that you decided to come out to your father about our relationship.
“I don't know, I guess Mavis's death shook you. I was drowning, burying and mourning my son.
At first, your father couldn't take it. Everyone in the company was made aware, even your friend Kaden.
“Kaden? That name sounds familiar.”
“Yeah,” I said. “He was interested in you, until he found out that we were in a relationship. I think news broke out later that he was in fact the father of Isabella's child.”
I could tell she was lost in her head. Maybe she got a flash of memories? Maybe not, but I buckled up to dish out the real deal.
“So…how did we get married?”
“You begged me. You promised we would be together for a few years. We broke up and decided to part ways, but you needed to marry me to reclaim your name. And I…I was already so in love with you that I didn't hesitate. Fuck it, I know I did something I shouldn't have, but I cared about you, Nyssa. I couldn't watch you drown in life, blaming yourself for something that wasn't up to you.”
“So we got married?”
“Yes. Your father didn't attend—it was just an on-the-low marriage. He hated my guts, and I don't blame him. I felt like I had tied you down with a ring when I should have done something else. So I tried to make it right. I offered you money, a job, even an estate in your name so you could start life afresh. But I guess you were so lost in your head that you thought the marriage was compensation for Mavis's death.”
She looked at me, wide-eyed and mouth agape.
“When I found out that was how you felt, I questioned if you really loved me. I thought about asking for a divorce, even though I couldn't stand the thought of you leaving me. But that was the only way. Somehow, you wanted to make things right, so you reached out to Ruby, and that was when everything started turning sour.”
“Me? Why?”
“I guess you felt bad, especially with her being his wife. But Ruby was smart, and no one knew this. But I had suspected. I still couldn't do anything.”
“How?”
I hesitated for a while before I continued.
“Everything started going well for us. I mean, we talked more now, and we even made jokes. I loved it, and I know it's selfish, but I enjoyed it and didn't want it to end. So I let all my suspicions about her fade away, I didn't act on them. Not until the accident.”
“A car accident? What accident?” She shifted and moved closer.
“No. The accident that made you lose our children.”
Her breath hitched, and it worsened my anxiety.
“Please, say anything you want to.”
“What happened to our babies, Ronan?”
“I killed them. I took that decision without your knowledge.”
And it suddenly felt like the lump in my throat had gone further down my stomach, a burning sensation in my chest as I stared at my wife.
“You…you what?” she asked in disbelief.“I had to. You were dying. I had to save you!”
“And you didn't save our children? They were my kids! Mine!” she shouted this time. Her eyes watered down now, her ears and nose the reddest I'd seen as she sniffed.
She stood abruptly, pacing around the room.
“Y-you…how could you?!”
“Let me finish, please?” I begged.
“When we found out that you were pregnant, we were happy. I didn't even know it was triplets. But then you started acting funny.”
“What do you mean?”
“Like you were forgetting things…a lot. You were sad…all the time. You would have some out-of-character behaviors that weren't you.”
She quickly sat back down.“I knew something was wrong. And my instincts told me Ruby was behind all of this. I should've acted sooner—should have seen it coming, but I acted blind. Your dad started speaking with us, and everything was going great. It had been two
years since Mavis's death. You were a few months into the pregnancy, past your first trimester, when the accident happened that night.”
