Chapter 37: Next

"I suppose you already have someone in mind" My father's best friend, Jacob says and I nearly rolled my eyes. He had invited him to dinner with him and I was tempted to bring Katie along but I stopped myself because I figured it's going to cost me a lot of trouble.

One, saving myself from paparazzi and Jacob might want to prolong this meeting. Unlike my father, Jacob has no son. His wife died during childbirth many years ago and since he never thought of getting married again despite the pressure he was getting. How I wished things were like this for me and I didn't have to drag Katie along down with me in my bid to get vengeance.

So since my father died, Jacob has filled in the father role in my life. Not like I needed any but I can't toss him away. He's been a father to me ever since I was little.

"Did you hear me at all, Edward?" I looked up at him to see that he had dropped his fork and was now staring at him. Apart from my mother, he's another person that loves calling me by my middle name.

I hated the name because it reminds me of Edward and Bella making me look like a Nine hundred old vampire.

"Sorry, I wasn't paying attention" I apologized and waited for him to continue eating before I did.

"I asked if you've gotten someone you want to settle with. You're not getting younger and your inheritance is at stake. Your father will want you to get married and produce an heir. I am not getting younger too, Son. It'll make me happy to see your son before I die"

"I see that you've not been using the internet"

"It's filled with languages I don't understand. You going kids move fast very quickly" he said and I nodded my head.

"I proposed to someone. Katie, My ex. We've been seeing each there recently and we've decode to settle"

"Katie..?"

"Yes, Katara. It's been a few years but you should remind her. I do bring her with me"

He paused for a few minutes as if trying to remember her and suddenly spoke up.

"Katara…. I remember her. The lady who reminds me of my wife? Ah! A very beautiful lady."

"Yes, she's the one," I confirmed.

I find it funny that Jacob says Katie resembles his page wife, Mrs Benchman. I never got the chance to meet her, I've seen her pictures and she indeed looked a lot like Katie. I mean Katie is a striking copy of her.

"Congratulations son. I'm glad you finally made that decision. Katie is a good lady, I'll finally get to see her one more time" Jacob smiled and I did too.

After Dinner, the maids came to clear our table away, replacing the table with a series of desserts. I spent quality time with Jacob like always before I decided to call it a day.

By the time I got to my apartment it was already late. "That old man knows how to pass away your time" I muttered before getting out of my car.

I skipped showering when I got back inside and went straight to the bar, opening a new bottle of whiskey. I poured myself two full bottles, gulping it down one after the other. I know it's going to be a long night yet, I don't care.

I have a meeting to attend in the morning but here I am drinking. I wasn't thinking, I just continued to drink until I emptied the whole bottle.

I picked up my phone and dialed Katie's number. She picked on the second ring.

"Come over" I say, not giving her the chance

to say anything before I ended the call.
