Chapter One-2

"I don't really remember," she shrugs it off. "I just remember his face, which is gorgeous." Casey always pays more attention to faces. His personality could be complete shit, but she'd still like him for his looks. I change the subject when my stomach growls. It had been growling in class. "Where are we heading? I was thinking a sandwich sounded good." "The deli it is." As she drives, I can't help but think about Jacob and how he looked. It's unfair what he did. Last year I was picturing how perfect our senior year would be together and he decided to sleep with Lauren. I was ready for new adventures with him and he clearly wasn't. "You okay?" Casey asks. "Yeah, I'm fine." I know she doesn't believe me so I sigh in defeat. "I saw Jacob earlier." "Did he talk to you?" "No, no. I don't think he saw me." "Good." She pulls into the deli parking lot and shuts off her car after parking. "Listen, I know we've talked about this a million times since it happened, but I just want to make sure you know I'm here for you. I can tell when you're thinking about him." I give her a smile. "I know you're always here for me. I don't really want to talk about it right now though. I just need food." We're ordering at the front when Jacob walks in with his friends. I face the counter, just wanting to sit down already to avoid his eyes. Casey finishes ordering and I grab her arm. "Speak of the devil," I tell her. She glances behind us and her eyes widen. "Lace, we can get our food and go if you want." "No, it's okay. Let's just find a table and sit." We end up sitting in a booth in the back corner where we have a full view of the deli. My sandwich distracts me for a little bit. Casey's still going on about the guy in her psychology class. Jacob is sitting at a table near the front. He's laughing with one of his friends and I feel guilty for missing his smile. I fell hard for that smile when I realized how happy he made me our freshman year. That smile always made me weak at the knees. He turns suddenly and our gazes lock. I'm the first to look away. "We better be heading back soon," I tell Casey. The sooner we get out of here, the better. She finishes her food and we throw our trash away. When we're walking to the front to leave I know we have to pass by Jacob's table. I make Casey stand next to me so I can't see him. While we walk out I feel his eyes burning into the back of my head. We have a few minutes before the bell rings for class when we get back to campus. We waste time by sitting in the car. "What class do you have next?" Casey asks. I pull my schedule from my bag. "Um, I have English. Journalism is my last class." "I have math and some kind of science." She sighs. "We need to coordinate schedules next semester." "Definitely. Our last semester should be the best one." I stare at her black and white striped button down shirt. "You're gonna have to let me borrow that shirt at some point." She had on a white tank top underneath with some black shorts and her white converse. "I'll let you borrow it once you actually wear what I pick out for you," she rolls her eyes. "I'm wearing what you picked out." "Not the wedges." I'm the one to roll my eyes this time. "I didn't feel like wearing them." "It would've made the outfit so much cuter." "Thanks," I say sarcastically. Casey and I go our separate ways in the main building. Jacob is walking not too far from me. I know where my class is so I duck my head and start to walk faster. When I'm about to walk into class someone taps my shoulder. I regret turning around when I'm faced with Jacob's familiar brown eyes. "Hey, Lacey," he says as he gives me a smile. I open my mouth to say something, but nothing comes out. My brain can't form a reply. "I, uh...I just wanted to say you look great." He chews on his bottom lip. My mind is racing. Do I ignore him? Say thanks? Tell him to screw himself? "Thanks," I say, not fully processing why I say that. I take a step back and bump into someone. I quickly mumble an apology without looking at the person. The bell rings and Jacob blinks. "Shit. I better get to class." He waves and disappears down the hall. I walk into class and sit down at the first empty seat I can find. Too many thoughts are a jumbled mess in my mind. I mentally kick myself for saying thanks when he said I look great. Where was confident Lacey in that moment?
