Chapter 298: Return to the Adams Family
"You suffered so much mistreatment at my place, I don't want you to suffer the same when you go back to the Adams family." He understood her so well. Going back to the Adams family today, if she didn't prepare ten thousand dollars, Wayne would definitely lecture her.
Nora felt warm inside. "How's Scarlett? Is she done with the checkup?"
She missed him.
"She's about to go for the checkup now." Steven was on the phone.
Beside him, Clarence was pushing Scarlett in a wheelchair.
Scarlett glanced over and saw the tenderness on Steven's face. A wave of jealousy spread through her heart.
Her expression darkened.
The next second, she fell from the wheelchair.
Steven looked over while holding the phone. Scarlett was on the ground, her face pale.
"Scarlett." Steven walked over to help her up. "How did you fall?"
"Maybe I wasn't careful." Scarlett looked at Steven vulnerably. "Steven, the checkup is coming up and I'm a bit scared. Can you come in with me?"
"It's just a checkup, you'll be fine." Steven comforted her.
Scarlett shook her head. In her striped hospital gown, she looked as fragile as a dying butterfly. "I want you with me."
Her eyes were full of tears.
Steven's gaze deepened. "Okay."
Nora held the phone, hearing the conversation between Steven and Scarlett on the other end. She was stunned.
She wanted to say something, but didn't know what to say.
If something really went wrong with Scarlett's checkup and she stopped Steven from being there, in the end, Steven might hate her...
When facing death, the patient's mental state is what matters most.
Nora shook her head, clearing away those negative thoughts, and followed the GPS to drive to the restaurant...
At the restaurant.
As soon as Nora entered the private room, she saw Kai Adams and his family sitting across from her parents. Kai's family was dressed fashionably, forming a stark contrast with her family's simple attire.
At that moment, Kai was bragging about how much money he'd made. Kai was in his fifties with a 25-year-old daughter who had a master's degree.
The Adams family parents listened awkwardly, occasionally responding.
"And this is...?" When Nora walked into the room, Kai's attention was immediately drawn. She was so beautiful!
Wayne answered, "This is our younger daughter, Nora."
They'd been living in South City for over ten years and hadn't seen the Adams family relatives in many years, so it was normal they didn't recognize each other.
Kai asked quietly, "Is this the daughter who's not blood-related to your family?"
Wayne nodded slightly. "Don't mention it in front of her."
Now that Nora had married a husband with good conditions, Wayne was counting on Nora to support them in old age!
"She's really beautiful." Kai smiled and glanced at Nora.
Beside him, Stella Hall saw Kai's leering expression and her face turned cold.
"Nora, come greet everyone. This is Kai, Stella, and their daughter Raina Adams, your cousin."
"Kai, Stella, Raina." Nora greeted them in turn.
"Nora, we haven't seen each other in so many years. You've become more and more beautiful." Raina was very enthusiastic, standing up to shake Nora's hand.
"Raina too, more and more beautiful." Nora responded politely.
Stella suddenly asked her, "Nora, why didn't Olivia come today? Is she too embarrassed to see us after getting divorced?"
Nora was slightly stunned and frowned. Looking at Stella again, she felt her expression was condescending.
"Olivia is probably busy." After sitting down, Nora turned to ask Tanner, "Olivia's not coming today?"
"She said she's going to Pearl City to negotiate a project and won't be in South City during this time." Tanner answered.
Nora said nothing.
Maybe she really was avoiding the Adams family. After a divorce, there's too much gossip, and most of it comes from relatives around you. That's what really hurts.
"Nora, didn't your husband come with you?" Jasmine, who was feeding her baby formula nearby, spoke up.
"He'll be here soon." Nora glanced at her. She was wearing a diamond necklace and a diamond ring on her finger.
The family finally bought her jewelry.
The money was probably from Olivia.
Nora quietly asked Tanner, "Did Olivia pay for the jewelry Jasmine's wearing?"
"Yes." Tanner's expression wasn't great. "I didn't even know about this before. Jasmine dragged Mom to the jewelry store, picked out what she wanted, and then called Olivia to come pay."
Nora could imagine Olivia's helplessness at that moment.
To force their family to buy jewelry, she'd use any dirty trick.
And she felt no guilt at all, showing it off every day since buying it.
She really had no good feelings left for Jasmine.
But she was Tanner's wife. If Tanner didn't want a divorce, she couldn't say too much.
Otherwise, if she said something to Tanner and they actually divorced, Jasmine and her family probably wouldn't let her off.
So they say, don't get involved in other people's marriages. Otherwise, after the couple fights and makes up, you become the outsider seen as the troublemaker.
"Nora's married?" Kai heard Jasmine's words and turned to ask Nora.
Sitting there with her beautiful features, her gestures carried a pure charm between girl and woman, so attractive that people couldn't look away.
Kai looked at her with an ambiguous gaze.
Nora felt his gaze made her very uncomfortable. She looked away and nodded. "Yes, I'm married."
"Married so soon? You're only in your twenties, right?"
"Twenty-three, turning twenty-four after the new year." Wayne answered for her with a flattering expression.
Kai had made big money in the stock market these past two years and was increasingly high-spirited. The gift cards he gave to the Adams family youngsters started at two thousand dollars each.
Seeing Kai so generous, Wayne became even more courteous toward him.
"Then today's meal should really be treated by your husband." Kai saw that Nora wasn't paying much attention to him and deliberately tried to embarrass her.
If her husband didn't have money, she probably wouldn't want to pay for this meal.
Who knew Nora would smile lightly and say, "Sure."
Today Steven should indeed pay. If Steven didn't come, Nora would just use her own card.
Kai flipped through the menu. "Then I won't hold back."
The dishes had already been ordered, but Kai called the waiter back in and ordered several expensive seafood dishes plus two bottles of good wine. This meal would cost at least ten thousand dollars.
Tanner was a bit speechless and said to Nora, "As soon as he heard you're paying, he immediately added more dishes."
Nora said gently, "It's okay."
Ten or twenty thousand dollars—Steven could afford it.
"Where's your husband?" After adding dishes, Kai asked Nora again. "Call him out so we can see him."
"I'll give him a call."
Kai was being aggressive, so Nora had to make the call.
But Steven's phone wasn't connecting.
Kai laughed and said, "What? Is he avoiding us?"
Just as Nora was about to respond, the private room door opened. Steven walked in wearing a suit, tall and handsome, refined and noble.
Raina was stunned.
Steven was so good-looking!
"This is my husband, Steven." Tanner stood up proudly to introduce him.
Everyone at the table looked at Steven.
He nodded slightly in greeting. His innate nobility and commanding presence made everyone at the table afraid to meet his eyes.
Then he walked slowly to Nora's side, sat down, and quietly held her hand. "I'm not late, am I?"
"Why couldn't I get through on the phone earlier?" Nora asked him quietly.
Steven said calmly, "Probably no signal in the elevator."
That made sense.
"Did you order?" Steven asked her.
Nora nodded. "Already ordered. We'll pay later."
"That's what I was thinking."
"How's Scarlett?" Nora poured Steven a glass of water.
Steven took a sip and said, "It's confirmed, she has heart disease."
Nora nodded and said nothing more.
Kai saw them talking and spoke up to ask Steven, "So you're Nora's husband?"
"Yes, you must be Nora's uncle?" Steven responded calmly with extraordinary bearing.
Raina at the table quietly observed him, feeling Steven was very different—his temperament and presence were both very strong.
Not to mention Jasmine. From the moment Steven entered, her eyes had been glued to him.
"What do you do?" Kai asked Steven.
Steven responded lightly, "I work in tech."
York Development Group was a tech company. Kai understood it as computer work and said with a laugh, "You mean like a programmer? Same industry as Tanner?"
"More or less." Steven nodded with a smile. Their company did have many programmers.
Kai immediately looked down on Steven.
So just a programmer, making at most ten or twenty thousand dollars.
Dressed up all fancy, he thought he was some big shot!
"I play the markets. Do you do any of that?" Kai wanted to show off in front of Steven.
"I know a bit." Steven had made his early fortune in stocks. Nexus Investment Group was a private equity firm that specialized in this.
Kai said, "The funds are doing great this year. I've made over two million dollars. How about you?"
Steven frowned slightly and said calmly, "It'll probably crash in a couple days."
Kai's expression stiffened. "Are you cursing me?"
"Believe it or not, up to you." Steven didn't say more.
"Don't talk nonsense if you don't understand." Kai didn't believe him at all. He'd just bought in at year-end and the momentum was excellent. How could it crash?
Steven said nothing more and picked up his utensils to serve Nora food.
Raina had been paying attention to Steven's words. She thought for a moment and opened her phone.
She'd also bought some funds. Opening the app.
She'd bought one fund that was doing very well this year and had already made her several thousand dollars. But considering Steven's words, she decided to redeem it and sold the fund.
After the meal, the waiter came in with fruit.
Seeing Steven make no move, Kai said directly to the waiter, "Bring the bill over."
"Okay." The waiter handed it to him.
Kai looked at it—a total of 12,600 dollars.
Kai was certain Steven couldn't afford it and said contemptuously, "Oh my, this meal cost over ten thousand dollars. How about I pay instead?"
Then he said to the waiter, "Where do I swipe my card? I'll pay."
The waiter said, "Sir, this bill is on account. No payment needed."
The waiter then handed the bill to Steven.
Steven signed his name.
"Please enjoy your meal." The waiter bowed respectfully to him and left.
Everyone was stunned.
What just happened?
