Chapter 213 Crossing the City to See Her
York Development Group.
It was dinnertime, but Steven was still working in his office.
James walked in carrying a lunchbox. "Mr. York, it's time for dinner."
Steven flipped through documents while coughing softly. "Just leave it here," he said flatly.
James set the food in front of him and placed a box of fever medicine on the desk.
"Why did you buy medicine?" Steven asked casually.
James said, "Ms. Adams asked me to bring this to you."
Steven paused slightly, his eyes falling on the dishes on the table. He understood.
Tonight's dinner was made by Nora. No wonder the smell seemed so familiar when James came in.
"She knows I'm sick?" Steven looked at James.
James thought he had said too much and quickly explained, "I'm sorry, Mr. York. I noticed you haven't had much appetite lately and kept saying you couldn't eat the hotel food, so I asked Ms. Adams for help. Plus, you've been working late every night recently. I'm really worried about your health."
Steven didn't say much, only asking, "What else did she say?"
"Nothing else."
Steven's expression darkened. "Besides making food, she didn't mention anything else?"
James thought for a moment. "Actually, she did."
"What?" Steven's eyes showed curiosity.
"Ms. Adams said fever medicine has been hard to find lately, so she gave you the one she kept for herself. I could tell she really cares about you."
Steven stared at the medicine box, silent for a while, then asked, "Has she met with Andrew recently?"
"No. Ms. Adams's life lately has just been work and home, nothing else. Mr. York, I think..." James hesitated.
Steven looked up. "Just say what you want to say."
"I think you might have misunderstood Ms. Adams. There's nothing between her and Mr. Andrew York. And she really cares about you. As soon as she heard you were sick, she went home right after work to cook for you." James glanced at Steven as he said this.
His handsome face was tense, lost in thought.
12:30 AM.
York Development Group's project finally had a new solution.
Everyone was exhausted but relieved. Starting tonight, they could finally rest earlier.
"Finally fixed it," James sighed, opening the car door for Steven.
Steven coughed a few times and put on his mask. "You're tired too. Go home early. I'll drive myself tonight."
Steven drove into the night.
After some time, the car stopped at Riverside Apartment.
He didn't understand why he had driven here.
Still not used to being apart?
He had worked through the night almost every day this week. Today he could finally go home early, yet he crossed half the city to come to Riverside Apartment.
If he drove back to Xi Garden now, it would take an hour.
He rolled down the window.
In the deep night, he looked up at the twentieth floor of the complex.
A light was still on.
Steven checked the time. Almost 1 AM. Is she still awake?
He opened Nora's account. They hadn't contacted each other since the breakup. The last message was—
[Honey, when are you coming back?]
That was the last thing Nora had sent him before they separated.
He refreshed it. Almost a week, and no new messages.
Since she had made him food and sent medicine, why didn't she send a message to check on him? Didn't she care about his condition?
Steven sat in the car looking at his phone, not knowing what he was waiting for, refreshing the screen over and over.
Still no new messages after a long time.
He felt irritated and couldn't help calling her.
Nora was working overtime at home on her computer. Seeing Steven's call, her eyes widened slightly. She answered.
"Hello." She held the phone to her ear.
Steven didn't speak right away. Only faint static could be heard on the line.
Nora was also silent, not knowing what to say.
"Why did you give me the fever medicine?" Steven finally spoke first.
"You have a fever, don't you?" Nora answered. "I had two boxes at home. I was worried you didn't have any, so I gave you one."
"What else?" Steven wanted her to continue. He was used to her comforting him. If she didn't, he couldn't bring himself to ask.
Nora paused. "I heard the project has been fixed. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." He sounded slightly impatient, wanting her to get to the point.
Nora only said, "That's good. You should rest more and drink plenty of water when you're sick."
"That's it?" He had waited so long, and she only said a few simple things.
Nora bit her lip. "Also, if you have a fever, remember to take the medicine."
Steven suddenly hung up.
He regretted making this call. After hearing a bunch of useless words, he felt even more irritated.
The irritation made his headache worse. He pressed his forehead, wanting to go upstairs to see her.
Then he realized his forehead was burning hot.
He had a fever.
Steven was stunned, his consciousness becoming foggy.
He didn't want to pass his illness to her, so he gave up on going upstairs and sat in the car in a daze until dawn.
On the other side.
Nora looked at the disconnected call, feeling a bit disappointed.
He was unhappy again.
They could never get along for more than ten minutes without arguing. Nora sighed, feeling down.
That night, she didn't sleep well.
The next morning, Nora was woken by urgent ringing.
"Hello." She answered the phone.
"Ms. Adams, something's wrong!" James's voice sounded urgent. "Mr. York stayed in his car all night. He's had a fever the whole time. He didn't take the medicine, and now he's burning up so much he's almost unconscious."
Nora's heart tightened. "Where are you?"
"We're at Riverside Apartment." James had been shocked when he received Steven's call this morning, too.
Steven had actually come back to Riverside Apartment last night and stayed in the car all night with a high fever. It was dangerous.
James had already picked up Steven and was scared by his high temperature.
At first, he had contacted Chris.
Chris was at the hospital dealing with the flu situation and didn't have time for Steven. He also told James not to bring him to the hospital.
Chris said, "Just handle this minor illness yourself. If not, take him to Riverside Apartment and let his wife take care of him. She knows some medical treatment and can take good care of Steven."
So James called Nora.
Hearing they were at Riverside Apartment, Nora was confused. "You're at Riverside Apartment?"
"Yes, Ms. Adams. Could you please take care of Mr. York? Dr. Green said the hospital is full right now..."
Nora didn't hesitate. "James, bring Steven over. I'll take care of him."
"Okay, thank you, Ms. Adams. I'll bring Mr. York up now."
Soon, James helped the drowsy Steven to her home.
Nora quickly stepped aside. "Come in."
They laid Steven on the bed in the master bedroom. He was burning up, his consciousness foggy, not knowing where he was.
Nora came in with a thermometer. "James, let me take his temperature. If you don't have symptoms, you should go out so you don't get infected."
"Okay." James tucked him in. "Ms. Adams, the company project has been fixed, but it hasn't been released yet. I need to go back. Please take care of Mr. York."
Nora nodded. "You go ahead. I'll take good care of him and contact you if anything comes up."
"Okay." James left.
Nora quickly disinfected the room and came in to take Steven's temperature.
His handsome face was flushed red from the fever, and he slept restlessly.
She found the suit in the way and reached to take it off. It was hard to take his temperature with him wearing a dress shirt.
"What are you doing?" Steven weakly grabbed her hand. Even with a high fever, he was still defensive.
Nora looked worried. "You have a fever. It's hard to take your temperature with the shirt on. I'm helping you change."
He still wouldn't let go.
Nora sighed helplessly and leaned down to kiss his cheek gently.
Only then did Steven release her hand.
Nora sighed inwardly, took off his shirt, and changed him into home clothes.
The temperature reading is—103.64°F.
Nora was scared.
She got the fever medicine, followed the instructions, broke off one pill, put it in his mouth, and offered him water.
But in his unconscious state, he couldn't swallow. The water and pill came back out together.
Nora frowned.
She helped him sit up and put her arm around his back.
Steven instinctively pushed her away. "Go away..."
Defensive again.
"Steven, it's me," Nora said softly, putting the pill in again.
Just as he was about to spit it out, she took a sip of water and sealed his lips with hers, sending the medicine in.
Even if she got infected, she accepted it.
If it weren't for that project, he wouldn't have worked so many late nights and gotten sick.
This was her responsibility.
Finally, Steven swallowed the medicine.
Nora breathed a sigh of relief.
Soon, he started sweating. Nora took a towel and reached inside his clothes to wipe the sweat.
As she wiped, Steven opened his eyes and saw a familiar face.
She was wiping carefully, even reaching into his pajama pants to wipe the sweat on his legs.
Steven frowned. "Why are you here?"
Nora looked up and saw his unfocused gaze and earlobes flushed red from fever.
"You had such a high fever that you passed out. James brought you here and asked me to take care of you." She looked at him.
