Chapter 151: Chapter 151

Down on the main floor, the live orchestra faded out, replaced by the crisp, authoritative chime of a crystal glass being struck by a silver spoon. Stefan stood near the microphone setup on the central dais, looking remarkably sharp in his tailored suit, a charming, confident smile on his face.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Stefan’s voice echoed rich and clear through the ballroom's sound system. "If I could direct your attention to the mezzanine balcony, it is my distinct honor to introduce the hosts of tonight's summit, the Chief Executive Officer of FV Global and Head of the Valerius Estate, Madam Isla Valerius-Ferro, accompanied by Don Nikolai Ferro." A sudden, thunderous wave of applause erupted across the massive hall.

Five hundred titans of industry, European diplomats, and syndicate bosses turned toward our balcony, raising their glasses in unison.

Nikolai didn't flinch. He stood straight and imposing, his heavy hand moving down to lock firmly around my waist, keeping me anchored at his side as we looked down upon our kingdom. I lifted my glass slightly, bowing my head with serene, absolute poise, the undisputed Queen of a unified empire.

By midnight, the formal portion of the evening had concluded, and the room had transitioned into the smooth, relaxed rhythm of late-night networking.

Aunt Alessia and Aunt Katrina were holding court near the fireplace with several European gallery owners, while Esme was laughing near the dessert tables with a group of young corporate directors. Stefan was currently nowhere to be seen, undoubtedly off somewhere with his new model companion while Wesley and Jules maintained their steady, silent guard near the main exit doors.

I stepped away from a group of Swiss banking delegates, feeling the subtle ache in my heels after standing for four straight hours.

I slipped through a pair of tall glass french doors leading out onto a secluded balcony that overlooked the quiet dark ocean. The cool night wind instantly hit my face, refreshing and crisp, rustling the heavy velvet folds of my dress. I closed my eyes, taking a long, slow, deep breath of the sea air, letting the noise of the ballroom fade into a distant hum.

Behind me, the glass door opened quietly, shutting out the indoor music with a soft click. Heavy, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling my back firmly against a broad, solid chest of radiating heat. Nikolai rested his chin in the curve of my shoulder, his dark stubble tickling my skin as his breath fanned warm against my neck.

"Tired love?" he whispered low, his large hands sliding up over my silk-gloved ribs, cupping my body with effortless, absolute possession.

"A little," I admitted softly, leaning my head back against his shoulder, letting my eyelids stay heavy. "Standing in heels for four hours while convincing Swiss bankers that we aren't going to liquidate their assets is exhausting."

He let out a low, rough rumble from deep in his chest. "We can leave whenever you want. The cars are waiting in the private tunnel below."

"No," I replied, turning my head to look at him sideways, my emerald eyes meeting his pitch-black ones in the moonlight. "We stay until the last guest leaves. We set the standard, Nikolai. We never look tired, and we never look weak."

He stared down at me for a long, silent beat. The moonlight hit the sharp angles of his high cheekbones and heavy jaw, painting him in broad strokes of silver and shadow. The dark, fierce, terrifyingly beautiful devotion in his eyes was so intense it made my breath catch in my throat.

He slid his hands down to my waist, effortlessly lifting me up until I was sitting on the broad stone rail of the balcony, framed by the starry sky and the dark sea behind me. He stepped between my knees, his broad shoulders blocking out the rest of the world, trapping me completely in his space.

"You are incredible," he growled low, his voice thick with raw emotion. His hands came up to frame my face, his calloused palms warm against my skin as his thumbs gently stroked my cheekbones. "Every time I think I couldn't possibly be prouder of you, you stand up in front of five hundred powerful men and make them bow without firing a single bullet."

"I learned from the best," I whispered, reaching up to rest my hands flat against his broad chest, feeling the heavy, steady thud of his heart through his dark velvet jacket. "I have the most dangerous man in the world standing beside me."

"Beside you," Nikolai repeated, his dark eyes burning with absolute truth. "Beside you. Always, beside you"

He leaned down, capturing my lips in a slow, deep, possessive kiss that tasted of cool air, rich red wine, and total, unshakeable devotion. I let out a low murmur against his mouth, my arms sliding around his thick neck, pulling him as close as physically possible, losing myself in the raw heat of his touch.

Out over the Atlantic cliffs, the waves continued their relentless assault on the dark rocks below, but here, wrapped in the arms of my husband, there was only peace.

The traitors were buried. The corporate board was unified. The sea lanes were cleared. The Valerius name was cleansed, and the Ferro bloodline stood taller and stronger than it ever had in thirty years of war.

We had built an empire out of iron, strategy, and blood. And as I looked up into Nikolai’s eyes beneath the midnight sky of Riverside, I knew that no storm in this world would ever be strong enough to break us.

Three months later, winter had settled over the Ferro estate. A thick, pristine blanket of white snow covered the rolling gardens, turning the manicured lawns and stone walkways into a quiet, frozen paradise. The great stone fireplaces inside the main house roared with crackling birch logs, filling the rooms with the rich, cozy scent of woodsmoke and fresh cedar.

I sat in my private second-floor office, wrapped in a thick, oversized cashmere sweater, my feet tucked up under me in my heavy leather armchair.

On my desk was a sleek leather-bound ledger, the finalized, consolidated annual report for the Valerius-Ferro global holding trust.

I ran my index finger over the clean, gilded numbers. Zero debt. Total operational security across twelve international ports. Uncontested corporate governance in London, Zurich, and New York. The door to the office pushed open softly.

Nikolai walked inside, wearing a simple dark grey sweater and black trousers. He held two steaming mugs of hot tea, stepping silently across the rug toward my desk. Ares trotted in right behind him, his heavy paws sliding slightly on the dark hardwood before he flopped down on the warm rug right beside my chair with a contented sigh. He set my tea mug down on a small silver coaster, leaning down to press a soft, slow kiss against the top of my head before looking over my shoulder at the open ledger.

"Closing the books for the year?" he murmured low, resting his hands on the back of my leather chair.
