Chapter 89

"Dean, are you tired of living?" Clair's handsome face suddenly darkened, his cold gaze cutting toward Dean like a knife.

Dean trembled all over, saying weakly, "I really didn't mean to let it slip. Your mom tricked me into talking. That's why I came to apologize."

Clair was radiating coldness. "When did my mom contact you?"

"Three hours ago." Dean didn't dare look at Clair at all.

Three hours had already passed!

Clair was furious, wanting nothing more than to beat Dean up so he'd learn his lesson.

He knew very well that if Zoey found out about my existence, she would definitely go looking for me right away.

He immediately called me, but my phone was off.

Having been taken to the detention center, my phone had naturally been confiscated temporarily.

Clair suppressed his anger and called Zoey.

Old Mansion.

Zoey looked at the caller ID, not daring to answer. She was sure Clair already knew everything, he wouldn't be calling her.

But if she didn't answer, Clair just kept calling.

The constantly ringing phone drove Zoey crazy with regret.

"Zoey, why aren't you answering?" Grandpa heard the noise and came over curiously to check. "Is it Clair? I think I saw his number."

Zoey had no choice but to answer. She was very nervous.

She tried to keep her voice steady. "Hello, Clair..."

"What did you say to Susan? How much money did you give her to leave this time?" Clair's tone was ice-cold, with a hint of mockery.

Every word was an accusation.

He could clearly predict what Zoey had done.

Zoey felt guilty and asked back, "I didn't give her money. What did she tell you?"

"What do you think she would say?" Clair was disappointed that Zoey was still thinking about how to make excuses.

"I just heard you had a girlfriend and wanted to check her out for you." As Zoey spoke, she suddenly straightened her back. "Clair, do you know what Susan said? She said she's just playing around with you. How could she possibly be worthy..."

"Mom, I told you not to interfere in my business." Clair cut Zoey off. "This is the last warning. Otherwise, don't blame me for not recognizing you as my mother."

Zoey's eyes widened in alarm. "Clair, do you know what you're saying? You'd disown your own mother over a woman!"

Beside her, Dean was also shocked.

He hadn't expected things to be this serious.

Even more unexpected was how much Clair cared about me.

Grandpa, standing next to Zoey, had his own concerns. He frowned. "Zoey, why didn't you take me with you to see Susan? Susan is very pretty, isn't she? She must really look like her grandfather."

Zoey had no time to deal with Grandpa, thinking he was confused again.

She walked aside, tears streaming down her face. "Clair, back then, you resented me for years because of Winona, wouldn't come home, wouldn't talk to me! Do you know how deeply you hurt me? Now you're fighting with me over some Susan!"

Clair didn't want to argue with Zoey and hung up.

Dean said carefully, "Clair, I think Zoey probably wouldn't do anything to Susan..."

Clair shot him a fierce look. "Shut your mouth!"

He was incredibly alarmed inside. He had never seen Clair this anxious before. After all, Clair could face losses of billions without batting an eye.

This time, Clair was actually panicking.

It made him curious about why Winona had left back then.

Unable to reach me, Clair hurriedly drove to find me.

Dean quickly followed.

Since this involved him, he felt uneasy.

He secretly glanced at Clair's dark profile, privately speculating that Winona's departure back then must have had something to do with Zoey.

Locked in the detention center, I sat alone in a corner, feeling very cold, my heart full of anxiety and unease.

I never thought I'd end up in a detention center in this lifetime.

For someone ordinary like me with no connections, if Charlotte really wanted to frame me, there was nothing I could do.

This world is actually very realistic. As long as you don't touch the darkness, the world is bright. But once you provoke the wrong people, you'll definitely taste despair.

I stared blankly at the small window above my head.

It seemed to be raining heavily outside, the whole sky gray and gloomy.

I hugged my knees, buried my face in them, Zoey's words constantly echoing in my mind, my heart sinking lower and lower, endlessly falling.

My tears welled up, too.

Perhaps this was how it would end?

Just then, urgent footsteps came from outside, and the iron door opened. I looked up to see Clair walking toward me, covered in wind and rain, his expression anxious.

I stared in shock.

The moment I saw him, my eyes stung terribly.

The tears I had finally stopped began flowing again.

"Susan." Clair pulled me tightly into his arms regardless of everything, his voice low and hoarse. "I'm sorry you had to suffer."

Dean tactfully walked away, but he still hid there watching.

It was the first time he'd seen Clair so anxious over a woman, completely losing his composure.

Before this, he thought no one in this world could melt Clair, this iceberg, but my appearance had changed him.

With Clair's bail, I could leave the detention center smoothly.

On the drive back, my feelings were complicated.

Several times, I looked at Clair, not knowing what to say.

But Clair suddenly held my hand. As if knowing what I was thinking, he spoke first. "Susan, whatever my mom said to you, don't worry about it."

"Just trust me." He squeezed my hand.

I was slightly stunned. So he already knew everything.

I had many questions I wanted to ask, but at this moment, it seemed I didn't need to ask anything more.

He could come when I needed him most, could comfort my heart before I even spoke—what more did I need to ask?

That's right, just like he said, just trust him.

I held Clair's hand back and nodded seriously. "Clair, you have to promise me too—if you ever want to end things, please tell me clearly."

I would be ready to leave at any time.

Clair sighed helplessly and pulled the car over temporarily. He turned to me. "Did my mom give you money to leave me?"

I was surprised that Clair really knew everything.

Clair continued, "This isn't the first time she's done this. But I can tell you, who I choose doesn't require anyone's approval."

Not the first time.

I noticed this point. It seemed Zoey had indeed paid off other women who had gotten involved with Clair before.

But that was all in the past.

I paused, then gathered my courage to ask, "Clair, you have an engagement with Charlotte, don't you?"
